the honeymoon ends for most after about 30 days, though others seem sto stick it out a year or so before leaving. hardcore nostriches will never abadon and leave though.

that said, before we talk about a billion+ nostriches, let's try to even hit 100K nostriches.

both of these protocols are broken and not decentralized. activitypub isn't better than atprotocol, it's just a different master.

Ever since I started working on the problem of alternative/decentralized social media I've said that "it's a 10 year project with a 0% chance of success". I'm stunned with how well nostr has gone over the last 3 years, and I think we have already achieved some measure of success (though global adoption still remains pretty unlikely in my book).

If you're feeling discouraged with engagement on nostr, user growth, client UX, business model profitability, developer funding models, or protocol stability, just remember how early we are. Very few new businesses reach profitability; protocols are even less likely than that to reach widespread adoption. Nostr's success is far from certain but it's worth investing in anyway. It's an incredibly ambitious project, and requires that we lower our time preference.

the nice thing about protocols and decentralization is that we can all have different goals and metrics to measure success. i believe we're on a path towards success, though i did wish it would accelerate from time to time. perhaps i wish more of the widespread tech community saw what we saw, even if the average user did not, yet.

I think this was a Derek mistake and not really a Notedeck issue. I think I had two reply/ note creation windows open. I most likely used muscle memory to reply in the contacts column instead of another column where I should have.

i gotta download this new graphic!

im currently sitting on a chair, so there's that. welcome to nostr!

you know what, i wouldn't even be mad at the first algo. henry winkler is awesome, he does post some awesome pics of the fish he catches and loves me some fishing. it's better than rage algo.

that's excellent. onboard and purple pill as many people as you can. ill zap you 1000 sats per person.

If Nostr is truly easier and more flexible, why don’t people use it or talk about it? I’ve listened to every one of your podcasts and loved every episode, but it’s frustrating to hear nearly every guest praise ActivityPub or AT Protocol. When you bring up Nostr, perfectly, in context, it gets no real discussion. To me, that signals they either don’t care about it or don’t really believe in its potential.

I agree we could improve in this area. I thought we were moving forward after the discussions at Nostriga, where clients started experimenting with managing keys and bunkers for users who wanted that option. It worked like the familiar email/password login flow, but since then, those clients have either shut down or moved on, and no further progress has been made.

Someone has to lead the way. Right now, most of the content is “yay Bitcoin” or “yay Nostr” because those are the core communities. We branch out into topics like art, music, cats, homesteading, carnivore, and health—but it often circles back to Bitcoin in some form. What we really need are genuine content creators producing original content beyond Bitcoin adjacent topics.

I don’t think it’s entirely true that all content is Bitcoin related. While much of it is, I’ve seen people share music, artwork, surfing videos, and more that resonate with our smaller user base. So there is variety, it’s just not the dominant flow yet. Bitcoin remains king and will remain king until someone else consistent posts content that resonates well within the community or brings their own community here.

Algorithms themselves aren’t the problem, it’s closed, forced algorithms that are. I think we agree here. What we need is better discovery through feed marketplaces and DVMs. Primal is currently the best at this, hands down. Still, DVMs aren’t perfect. They can be slow, offline, or unreachable at times. I also like Damus’ local first approach as a viable alternative.

reminder: tonight we're going to have another vibe coding jam session over on nostr:npub1z0lcg9p2v5nzg5fycxq0k56ze6snp42clmrafzqpn5w6u74v5x9q708ldk. bring your questions to ask and your ideas to share (and screenshare!) see you at 8PM EDT! https://honey.hivetalk.org/meet/Shakespeare_Vibe_Coding_Jam_Session

Would defaulting to none and give users a choice before installing anything be optimal? Yes. At least the choice exists. Maybe of these don't have a choice and default to one and only one "option".

Fold was so good in 2021-2023. RIP Fold.

i use zeus daily with my own node. it works incredibly fast for me.

YOU MUST CONSTRUCT ADDITIONAL PYLONS.

it's not just you, the latest Chrome on Ubuntu and Debian based operating systems looks ugly and is broken. this wavy or comic sans looking font is because of an incompatibility between Chrome's new "Fontations" rendering engine and the "Fira Sans" font.

this issue is fixed in the latest Chrome Canary, which means it's coming down the line soon to use on stable channels, but if you want a fix now, here is a workaround:

Install and open the GNOME Tweaks app (sudo apt install gnome-tweaks).

Go to the "Fonts" section.

Click on the font name next to "Interface Text" (which is "Fira Sans Regular").

Change it to a different font. "Noto Sans Regular" worked perfectly for me.

Restart Chrome completely.

Please note: This changes fonts system-wide and not just for Chrome.

This comment made me realize that you removed the ability to post to a specific relay. Where am I supposed to put this relay at then if I wanted to use them?
