SimpleX: https://lnshort.it/symbsrcool-simplex/ dev that’s excited about Nostr - recently launched https://nokyctranslate.com

Glad I’m not the only one ha

Yeah I think it will be very useful to keep requests separate. I have already gotten 1-2 spam DMs.

The reason for posting about this stuff today was just to see if others were having similar experiences, so thank you for sharing! I’m sure new versions of clients will find clever ways to address these issues.

I would recommend adding filter.nostr.wine especially since you paid for wine! (See here: https://filter.nostr.wine).

But…that likely won’t solve the issues you are having. Thread tracking can get messy because some clients implemented it differently. It’s improved though over time imo.

Notifications (local) are brand new and pretty buggy, wouldn’t sweat it.

Delayed DMs is a weird one. You might see the alert late but you should get it right away if you are querying for kind 4s. I’ve never had an issue w that on Damus.

Thank you! Awesome I’ll check that out!

I think I didn’t see a new DM because it was in the requests tab and not the messages tab, and I forgot to check it.

I also got a notification for a new DM today but I think it might be a month old, because I haven’t gotten any new DMs from that user in weeks. But my conversation with them started way before notifications on damus was a thing

Are people having smooth experiences on #damus or other Nostr apps?

95% of stuff works well but I still get:

- delayed notifications

- only partial thread views / threads slow to load

- delayed DMs

It doesn’t seem specific to any one client - no single client has a flawless experience for me yet, so perhaps it’s more of a relay issue?

I love #damus btw

I’ve started to become a bit paranoid that I’m missing a notification, DM, etc.

So far I’ve been using #damus on mobile, #iris and #nostrgram on desktop

I’ve paid for and use #eden and #nostr.wine relays

Is it just still early? Is this the nature of a decentralized protocol? Is it all dependent on the relays?

Oooh can someone link to the pod? Been wanting to learn more about cashu

So I’m not sure why the first test I did fail, it’s been working now perfectly - got notified when I got a DM when I wasn’t logged in - super useful, thank you for making this!!

Awesome, thank you for sharing this - playing around with it now

No, didn’t really have a good reason - I think I tried python-nostr first and had some issue - might have been because of secp256k library

Anyone using pynostr? I’m working on a bot that listens for DMs from relays but I don’t want to spam requests to the relays.

Looks like npub1nqu6xm23khceqjtlnvkjdrhq3yp7a3l4a5hf4c7wadwm3x4thggqjkkz86 (owner of pynostr) hasn’t been around recently?

I’d like to keep it in python…

I’m super interested in following development of this app! I’ve tried many productivity tools, got real serious about GTD, etc.

Is there a git repo / is this being made open source?

@tyiu pointed out there’s this NIP 12 addition to add a post source language but hasn’t been ratified yet?

If this NIP-12 addition got ratified and clients started following it, then maybe. But it’s still all optional. So may be unlikely? https://github.com/nostr-protocol/nips/pull/182

But there’s only like 8k pub keys writing events daily, so are there just tons of bots, or thrown away accounts?

I was with you until here “Since you own your data you should be able to say how others interact with it, which only zaps allows for. “

I disagree - you can control how you see their interactions with your notes, but you can’t control their interactions.

And it’s not really “owning” in the traditional sense. They have copies of it just like you do, it’s just proved that it came from you.

And if you don’t back up your posts, and relays don’t save them, you won’t take them anywhere because they don’t exist anymore.

IMO airbnb is a way better option than hotels in a lot of cases. (Not saying airbnb doesn’t have its own problems)

I love having the option to turn off likes and other dopamine-addicting features.

I often check Nostr.band so I can catch up in between opening my Nostr app. If likes are a core metric to tracking what’s been popular, etc I’d be worried about finding what’s been popular.

Maybe # of replies / reposts will be good enough though and we don’t need likes? Wondering out loud…

I thought this was more of a protocol discussion than a just a damus UX discussion… 😅

I personally wouldn’t want other peoples profiles to show a zap button if they wouldn’t/couldn’t receive it…

Liking seems maybe a little different because even if the person posting doesn’t want to see the likes, I can see how other may still want to like a post and posts that gets lots of likes is a way for people to find good content. So while the person posting would never see it, it could still be really useful for others.

Isn’t setting up the lightning node to block zaps the same thing as you saying you don’t want to “see” them? Someone still can try to send out the zap. Maybe it won’t go through but you can’t prevent someone from trying.

I love the idea of you choosing what you see in your UI, but once you put a note out there, it’s not yours anymore. You prove it came from you, but someone else can put in on a website and other people can interact with it in all the wierd ways they want to.

I think as soon as you’re trying to control what other people do, you’re trying to censor - if you don’t want to see something, just hide it, like with muting, etc.

This feels like the same argument as trying to tell someone they can’t say something because it might offend you. You’re only responsible for listening by and reacting, but you can’t control what someone else says.

If you still disagree, what do you think I’m missing here?

But we don’t own our notes? What does that even mean. We sign them, so they can’t be changed but then they get sent out for relays, other people, etc to do whatever they want with them. Once you put it out there, all people can do is verify you actually said it, but that’s it.

Isn’t your argument the same thing as asking someone not to say something to offend you? You’re trying to control other people here. In fact people aren’t “liking your note” instead a “like” event is broadcasted that says a person liked a particular note id, so their “like” is entirely separate from your “note”, it just refers to it

Just finished tonight! Next one on the way !!

Also book 6 apparently comes out in July 2nd

Lighthearted fun read, especially if you’ve ever played nethack, rogue, DND or any of those kinds of games.

Premise: Aliens take over earth and a number of humans compete in a galactically televised dungeon crawl to try to save their planet - main character is this guy Carl who enters the dungeon with his girlfriends cat and lots of hilarious wierd stuff happens as they try to play the game.

First book in a while I can’t put down

So https://www.deepl.com turned out to be a KYC demanding, fiat-only service. Yes, even if you want to ONLY use FREE API.

I’ll be taking a closer look at https://libretranslate.com/ , thank you very much!

Thought you might like to know we launched this today - feedback appreciated
