It's because so far, I have been able to avoid storing user uploaded images. Everything in relay tools is image links. The reasoning for that is to avoid cloud lock-in and image synchronization or processing within the cluster. (each frontend would need a copy of these user uploaded images once you go down this path).

favicons kindof breaks this, ... more likely i would just pick a better icon than the 21. like a checkmark, because self hosting is king, and anything making that more complicated is not ideal.

and yeah, probably the web server that has the 21 icon is the one that does the nip-05s

it's tied to the nip-05 in jumble so it is simplest to just add it to the handler for the nip-05

there is honestly very few apps that even have a reason to support a higher resolution image. there was this kinda aspirational movement at one point to make web apps into first class citizens in launchers and such especially on mobiles but it got overtaken by proper apps

the reverse proxy i made is nice tho, does go vanity redirects as well as nip-05 serving, and you can also do lots of other neat things, it does letsencrypt certs automatically for you, you can set your own custom certs and they have precedence so you can set a custom cert with a wildcard and all subdomains from a wildcard will use it (i forget exactly how i did that, but it's there anyway)

i've just bumped the v0.6.2 tag so there will be a binary release for it. the linux binaries are static so you can use them in a bare metal container without installing anything, or run the server on ancient versions of linux for whatever reason, without libc version problems

you have to find the most efficient signature verification algorithm.

and you really have to construct the canonical form and check the provided ID is correct. this is one of the problems with putting the ID on the wire, it becomes easier to forget.

sorry, but there is no way around this. you can't trust rando relays to do it. even if they do, you can't trust all of them to do it.

for mobile devices, checking an secp256k1 siganature on a sha256 hash of an event is not impossible, and anyway there is now fast libraries for both android and iOS. even, on android devices, you can make a little binary tool that runs to do the job. on iOS, the swift code IS binary so it's just a matter of having the actual function available.

Using expensive and non hardware optimized signature verification on mobile devices is a recipe for disaster. I understand the concern, but you have to make choices based on capabilities.

Nostr falls short in terms of discovery, right now discovery depends on other big follower profiles sharing your content, If they don't agree with it, it's as good as dead. Or you could get zapped largely by holders or however primal tries to solve discovery.

While this may work for you, and if it does there's really nothing that needs to be done, it was not sarcasm.

But this definitely doesn't work for a lot of people, especially when solutions are possible.

Hashtags are a joke here, they are literally the easiest curation mechanism but no one is looking at how it can be made better.

I've done a lot of work on pollerama.fun to be able to solve this, it even has hashtag curation and moderator selection, and it's good and it works for me, it's just hard to get the word out, especially with the existing discovery being a joke 😂

Japan has been moving towards complete integration with the national ID recently. They’ve had it for a while, but now I’m seeing businesses being forced to use their scanning units. To get any service, you have to scan your card and then do a face scan. There is a button to refuse the scan which I personally press every time - but my guess this is just a warming up period until they completely remove that option. It’s creepy and dystopian but is quickly becoming the norm. Last year it wasn’t really a thing but now it’s rolling out in more places.

Agreed... Client devs, especially mobile client devs, may be low-hanging fruit. And I guess that “My client just provides a WebSocket between the client and the relay” will work about as well as the old “Demonoid is just an indexer and search engine” excuse.

Still, as someone almost strictly on the relay side of things, I don’t think pushing all responsibility to clients with a "I’m just running some JSON backend thing" stance is going to hold up either. At a bare minimum, relay software should offer proper tools to manage Kind 0, Kind 1, and NIP-23 content. And folks running additional things like Blossom, NIP-96, etc., need solid ways to moderate media.

At the moment, Haven has neither. Well... the moderation tools are basically the file system and a database client 😅. I haven’t played with relay.tools myself, but given the scale of some relays running on it, I assume you already have some moderation tooling in place. I think that both client and relay software devs have to work with operators (and you and I are both people playing both roles at the moment).
