Violinist and teacher, building a homestead on raw land in between lessons and concerts. Fascinated by how we can develop resilience in our lives, in our families, in our communities. I'm excited about freedom tech and circular economies, and am deeply grateful for the devs and advocates who are helping build tools for a better future.

Ugh - sorry.

It coincides with the shortest days. Vitamin D/sunshine?

Thank you! this is very helpful. my guess is that the cardboard will take a while to breakdown for me as well, so I may try another area with your layering order to see how that works.

For my fruit trees that were already in the ground before we started making biochar, I've been adding a layer of it under compost/leaves/mulch and just hoping that at some point it works its way into the soil.

We should all be so used to limited hangouts by now that I'm surprised that anyone was expecting something real.

Actually, primarily for clearing scrub! Secondarily meat, but we have two girls in addition to the billygoat and one is pregnant so we may try milking her and seeing how that goes.

Day 3 of #31days

bodyweight, kettlebells (finally added a Jefferson curl), mobility.

This is fun and I'm feeling good! I've never quite worked out like this before, but I'm basically doing 5-15 minutes of exercise throughout the day until I get to the hour.

I'm hoping for a full split on at least one side by the end of the month but I'm still a good 8 inches away. I'll get closer for sure.

Hope you're all doing great! It's fun to read what everyone's doing.

Hey there! If you're still around - you can create a note with a bit more info about you/your interests and put #introductions in there so that folks will be more likely to see it.

Hello, Nostr friends!

Yesterday we dug a small pit for biochar. This is now the third method we've tried for making it and might be our favorite so far. The retorts in the wood stove are awesome but we can only make small quantities at a time, and I want an easy way to make a lot at once. We’ve made a fair amount in the double-barrel system but I found that to be much trickier- hard to get enough heat going in that narrow space between the barrels. Thanks to nostr:npub15879mltlln6k8jy32k6xvagmtqx3zhsndchcey8gjyectwldk88sq5kv0n for his excellent reference page and podcasts on making biochar.

Lots of good stuff happening today - taking care of the animals, continuing study on a few things I’m diving into these days; several hours of my fiat work (teaching, which I love!), and gathering wood for our next burn. There’s a lot to do right now to prepare planting areas for the spring and get charcoal incorporated into compost flows and eventually into mulch around our fruit trees and shrubs.

Also I’m happy to be doing the 31-day exercise challenge 🏋️‍♀️ with @hodlcuban and friends so will fit in 60 minutes of various exercises throughout the day.

Hope you all have an awesome day. 🤩

It's so gorgeous!

The tarp over your kitchen has withstood wind? (are you protected by the trees?)

We're on our 3rd or 4th tarp - they keep getting ripped. We're planting trees for a windbreak, but that will take a while!

The four corners of a raised platform for a building?

Hey all - this is my first post on Nostr using Damus after I set this up a while ago (thanks mostly to nostr:npub1s5yq6wadwrxde4lhfs56gn64hwzuhnfa6r9mj476r5s4hkunzgzqrs6q7z and a little bit to nostr:npub1h8nk2346qezka5cpm8jjh3yl5j88pf4ly2ptu7s6uu55wcfqy0wq36rpev 👍😉). I’m excited to keep learning from smart humans wherever their contributions can be found. 💪❤️

welcome!

True story: I've given birth twice, and my father somehow knew - from across town and before I had reached out - as soon as I went into labor both times.
