An average guy working in cybersecurity, using Bitcoin, tinkering with electronics and computers, and just being curious over all...

Great looking porterhouses! 😋

My 10-yr target for Bitcoin is that my purchase power is equal to or better than it is today 😉

I party like a rockstar for three quarters and hibernate for one. That how my epochs roll 😂😉

Ultimately, it looks like a stripped down Debian build. BIOS is for their proprietary systems; my laptop still has its BIOS after the install. There appears to be limited hardware recognition (including wifi adapters). I haven’t dug into it much to this point, and trust the Start9 team based on my limited trust circle. But I could dive into it if I had time.

I like SBCs too. Although I don’t have any RISC-V ones at this point, but I could check it out on an ARM SBC at some point.

I use the laptop because it was unused, has sufficient tech, has a decent battery, and other laptop benefits.

I enjoyed this talk. Decided to wipe an older laptop and install StartOS and a Bitcoin Core Node. Syncing right now.

It is a very different feel to my pieced together node. I don’t know how much I like it, yet. Lots out of my direct control, but that may become a good thing.

I will give it some time. And I will check out other services from the marketplace.

I am hopeful that I will eventually love it!

Yes, it is the few that make it difficult on the many, thus the onerous requirements and difficulty to get access to services that should be easily accessible. I blame the few more than I blame Apple, myself.

Yes, and I am focused on my dietary choices. Unfortunately too much attention is dedicated to a “diet” than a way of life that is sustainable and reasonably healthy. Enjoy life, enjoy moderation and enjoy yourself. I’m glad your decisions are working for you and you are enjoying the results.

If I were deathly obese, I would whatever diet it took to get my body back to a more healthy level, not a 5% body fat as too many focus on being “healthy”

The bullish case for Noderunners

Now that privacy is on the verge of being outlawed is the best time there has ever been to set up and run your own Bitcoin node.

This is probably going to sound like a sales pitch because it's coming from me, but that's really not the intention of this post.

It doesn't matter which node implementation you choose, just choose the one you want or whatever is the most convenient for you to get started. Run Core, run Knots, run Start9, run BTCpayServer, Parmanoodle, Citadel, my god, even Umbrel if you must.

The important thing is that it's YOUR node.

Think about it. We have ~18000 Bitcoin nodes online which is a laughable number when you compare it to the number of people on Nostr, Bitcoin talk and Twitter. At least three of those 18k are mine, and I suspect more people run multiple nodes, so the actual number of noderunning individuals is probably another magnitude smaller.

These Noderunners are serving the network, but much more importantly, they can verify that they get real Bitcoin when receiving UTXOs. And they can do so independently, over Tor, which means that, to this day, no one can stop them from doing so. With privacy services shutting down and wallet apps disappearing from appstores in certain jurisdictions, having your own money transmitter might not only come in handy, it could be the only way to transact if you have to.

No one knows what's going to happen next, but don't make the mistake to think the EU won't follow suit. Be prepared for the when your favorite wallet shuts down. Practice recovery with Sparrow or a similar wallet which allows you to connect to a node which is behind Tor. Preferably your own, but Uncle Jim Nodes work too. Ask your friends if you can't run your own.

At this point in time, individual Noderunners have not been targeted, because it's hard and the effort mostly outweighs the benefits for the gubberment, so far... And with every node coming online, it gets harder to take Bitcoin down. Which in return strengthens each and every one of us. A critical mass of NodeRunners is an unstoppable force, I don't claim to know when that critical mass is reached, but I am fucking sure it's not 18000.

So, what to do now? Bust out your Raspberry Pis, RockPros, old Laptops, iMacs, PCs. whatever you have and get to work. Build a node, run it and learn to connect to it. Do it before you need it. There's no need for a clearnet connection if you're not selling stuff or are otherwise uncomfortable with linking your public IP. Running it behind Tor is absolutely fine. No need for lightning either (but it's fun if you want to).

Too dystopian for you? GFY and take a look around. It's going to get worse before it can get better.

I agree! I should get a 3rd one set up 🤔

The All in Pod was a staple of the week for many of us.

When Chamath said stagflation wouldn’t happen a couple of years ago, his justification was that it couldn’t happen because he didn’t even know what stagflation meant.

People like Luke Gromen, James Lavish, Lyn Alden were consistently providing clearly researched work with explanations on macro without making claims with that kind of hubris.

Those doing the work were all Bitcoiners.

They’re the opposite of chamath and his ilk. Jason too. We daydream about having Bitcoiners buy the Knicks one day out of spite but that’s for another post.

What’s great about the group of Bitcoiners, is we’ve all had to admit that we were all kind of full of shit about what we knew about money.

That’s why we’re having fun.

People that can admit they were wrong are also capable at laughing at themselves and not taking themselves seriously. These are genuinely fun and interesting people to be around.

All bias aside, they are special people and very rare.

Those that can’t admit when they’re wrong are consistently in a tailspin to avoid the inevitable ego death. They turn into something weird then dark.

The next phase of FUD is these types of people getting behind the money transmitter definition change. Be on the lookout and call it out as soon as you see it.

They will do anything to be able to say I told you so. The changing of definitions is their saving grace from embarrassment and having to admit they were wrong. They most likely have VC money and political sway.

The fight you stage is here. We have to be prepared and quick to act before team ego gets momentum. They need Bitcoiners to be illegally transacting somehow or their ego death is certain.

The All-in Podcast use to be a staple for me, but I quit listening to them a couple years ago. I was too deep in the Gromen/Lavish/Alden and the like rabbit hole. I feel better informed now 🤓

So Samurai Whirlpool is like an ISP? ISPs make a profit connecting people to the Internet and people use that connection to purchase stuff with a credit card (ie Amazon) or to do fiat banking with their financial institutions. So, the ISP is a “Money Service Business”? 🤔 now what if that connection is at a coffee shop where there is no KYC of the coffee shop customers. Oh my! The whole Internet should be arrested!

I hope the judicial system sees the idiocies of the US government over these arrests and illegal enforcements…

You’re not alone! Mine keeps reminding me to diversify, and I’m like “into what?!”

Sounds like a $1.1B injection into the US defense industry and a boost to our GDP 🤷🏼‍♂️ I’m not saying it makes sense.
