GM, nostriches.

How much would you pay for this sweet tracksuit?

#gm #fashion #nostrich

When I was a kid, a paperback book cost about £10.

Now? You can buy a No. 1 bestseller for £4.50.

What changed?

https://video.nostr.build/08e471760da05aa42d66f500f74a3eb2594c6c14693a25ce3252dc2ea6c3b875.mp4

You’d expect the price of a book to increase.

£10 in 1993 is equivalent to £21.20 today

(even using the Bank of England’s laughably low inflation calculator).

Books are not cheaper to write. Quite the opposite.

Bigger teams are required to ensure a high-quality product.

Authors need computers, digital tools and subscriptions.

Paper and distribution costs are higher.

So why are holiday paperbacks so cheap?

The publishing industry ate itself.

Amazon ran bookshops off the highstreet.

Publishers could only turn a profit through mergers and acquisitions.

They bought up indie publishers and fired the staff.

Now, the Big Five publishers squeeze every drop of value from authors.

Most new novelists receive no advance and around 7.5% royalties

(34 pence per book before agent’s fees, taxes and other costs)

The Big Five (just like the big Hollywood studios) focus on a few major releases.

These books receive almost all of the marketing budget.

Publishers beg retailers to buy copies at costs so cheap they are making virtually 0 profit.

Prominent display in Tesco or Sainsbury’s means the book might become a best-seller.

(Yes, supermarkets are the biggest physical retailers of books in the UK).

Even the 0.01% of superstar authors are making a pittance on each book sold because of a broken system.

Not to mention that most writers face years of rejections before even signing a deal.

If you are a film-maker, an artist, or a musician, you’ll recognise this broken model.

Creative people have been corralled into the walled gardens of big tech (even worse than the Big Five publishers).

I used to dream of seeing my book in a bookstore with the Penguin logo on the cover.

Now, that thought disgusts me.

There are still some indie presses fighting the good fight, but they won’t last.

If you write, the value you offer is linked directly to the audience you build, not just the content you create.

I’m not saying this to tell you where to buy books or whom to support.

Just trying to explain the book industry and my place in it.

I’ve self-published books and had wonderful support from three indie publishers.

Writing careers are never linear.

Who knows what the future holds for my words?

With that said, I won’t be begging agents to read my manuscript.

I’m not aiming to be on the shelf in Tesco for £4.50.

I’ll focus on building an audience and delivering value to them.

And I'll be doing it here on nostr.

List of Businesses on Nostr:

I started this list so I could keep track but since I'm not sure if such a list like this exists anywhere else, I thought others would benefit from it too.

Many of these businesses are actively using #Nostr as a marketplace through which to sell their goods or services.

This is not exhaustive so feel free to add businesses I missed to the comments.

Here's to the early adopters, to seeing these businesses supported, and to seeing the #bitcoin circular economy grow:

Held my first bitcoin meetup yesterday.

Turns out there ARE plenty of bitcoiners in Gran Canaria!

15 people - a mix of locals, residents, & tourists.

Everyone from 'I'm moving to El Salvador' to 'I bought my first bitcoin last week.'

nostr:npub1ve8qwrlztemdmnh62jffcr0y9m9dpqgqjdg8ufx7gc3qw5wdk74qyv9ka6 made it happen.

I didn't take a picture of the Las Palmas group (maybe next time). This one is just used to represent the meetup.

It's Don Julio's last day cutting jamón at his hotel job.

Finally, retirement...

Then, on his journey home, he is waylaid by questions about his troubled past.

One for the meat lovers. Come get a slice of Canarian culture.

Delighted that my story, set near to Las Palmas, was recently published in Bull Magazine.

I don't believe tax on consumption is theft.

Extractive or invisible tax is.

Buying a Mars Bar with my pocket money in the 90s.

Best 29p I spent every week.

I felt like a king.

The bar was so big, it didn’t easily fit into my pocket.

I grasped it in my hand. Carried it around.

Boasting in front of my mates.

Mars bars don’t cost 29p now.

They cost 3 times that much.

And they aren’t as big.

Mars Bars in 2000 weighed 65 grams.

Now? Just 51 grams.

22% less product.

So what, Phil. Who cares?

That’s inflation, right?

(+293% for those who are wondering)

It happens.

Costs go up.

So do our wages.

Sure.

But you're not in control of either.

And funnily enough, your purchasing power only goes down.

"Inflation is always and everywhere a monetary phenomenon.” Milton Friedman.

It is taxation without legislation (a.k.a theft).

With every push 'the Big Red Button'🔴 the government steals from you.

Don’t blame Mars; blame the central banks.

And don't settle for a measly 51 grams at 3 times the cost.

Let's demand the whole damn thing, and take the button away from those thieves in suits.

Bitcoiners - stop using boring AI art!

It’s hard for bitcoin businesses, thinkers, and founders to stand out. Especially when their images look so similar.

We pay attention to difference, not white noise.

Am I against Dall-E or AI images?

Not entirely.

They add colour and can be quite arresting.

It’s amazing that we can get art like this at the click of a button.

But I see 50%+ of those who post about bitcoin using Dall-E images. All so similar!

If you do this, you end up as noise not signal.

They make your posts look like a cheap Crypto News website 🤮

Readers are hypersensitive to image quality.

It’s what determines whether they give your ideas the time of day or not.

***

Ideas to use instead of instant GPT images:

1. Trust your words.

Craft a hook that draws readers in rather than an image.

2. Show your face (or at least A face)

Selfies are divisive, but readers like to see who is offering the thought. We connect with people.

3. Use image libraries.

Search sites like Pexels or Unsplash for scroll-stopping photos.

4. Spend more time prompting.

Ensure your image looks unique. This can take some time.

Hope you found some value here.

Carry on, legends.

"Study Bitcoin" doesn't work.

It's completely ineffective.

Here's why...

Imagine approaching someone on the street.

You tap them on the shoulder and say, "Study quantum physics."

They think "Why the heck should I? Quantum physics sounds like a load of hard work."

They don't have a reason to care.

Imagine someone telling you to 'study corporate redundancy procedures' or to 'study the formation of stalactites'.

It’s boring.🤷

It would take you years to become an expert.

Bitcoiners will read books, listen to podcasts, and put in hundreds of hours of learning, but when it comes to messaging they are... unimaginative.

Many of the bitcoiners I know say things like ‘if only they knew’ or ‘if only they could see the logic’.

Did you really expect people in an online forum to respond positively to your aloof two-word command?

Don’t ask the 94% of non-believers to 'study bitcoin'. Make them care. 🧡

Think like 21st century copywriters, not 1950s school masters.

- Search for triggers.

- Uncover your audience’s real fears

- Paint a picture of their wildest dreams and show them the path to get there.

Tell stories of people in their situation.

Make your message resonate.

Don’t just set them a bunch of boring homework!

1BTC=1BTC, HFSP, and 'Study Bitcoin' are lazy.

Let's do the work to show nocoiners why they should care.

This picture represents exactly how many fucks I give about the stock market tanking.
