depends on the wallet. there were times where i couldnt get green wallets lightning integration to work for 8 hours straight, my sats were stuck. Or with Zeus, I had a force closure that stalled for weeks and never got my sats back. Channel connections in the early days of Mutiny were trash. Channel management went sideways on my umbrel node because of inconsistent internet due to a hurricane, resulting in weird software bugs. You could imagine that if you were someone who lost a couple million sats playing with lightning that you might be sour about it and post some all encompassing bs that the whole system is broken. But yes, I suspect for those who actually go the extra mile to incorporate sovereign lightning into their plan, they have horror stories. I also suspect that the others who dont talk about it as experts while holding sats in custodials.

I've run into debilitating technical issues multiple times where lightning wasn't working. Mostly with Zeus. Mutiny, CLN through green, or my own lightning node. It's this sort of mentality that everyone who disagrees is subpar that drives people to use other options.

The truth is, if you've not dealt with failed payments or forced closures, 1. you're lucky and 2. you're arguments for everyone else who has had issues are complete horseπŸ’©

finally! nostr.build to the rescue

My wife has been in contact with my Secret Santa, who wanted a better Wishlist than what I provided: "Socks. Boxers. Bitcoin."

Nobody in my family has yet been willing to learn how to buy sats.

you good bro? last time i heard that, someone had just lost a family member

That is good to know. I don't know how I've never run into such an issue as I've been using them since they went open source. I'm USA, so WoS isn't an option unless you first explain the importance of VPNs, and I don't want to evangelize 20 different things to a noob πŸ˜…

Other lightning options would be lifpay or coinos. I chose aqua as you get the benefits of liquid privacy and sat merge before you send it to cold storage as one huge utxo. I also don't trust lightning as much as I use to.

lol, yes, but with some tradeoffs I'm not willing to overlook for the sake of added privacy. If push came to shove, Monero offers a viable out, which I'm sure will only become more solid overtime. Until then, I will hold the most valuable asset.

Great point. I've wondered whether the sins of the person who gives me sats could in some way affect me, but me sending a potential murderer money via cashapp still has no direct link to my bitcoin (I believe). If they hold a gun to the guys head and ask him to divulge the identities of random lightning users, what info does he have? A fed, could pose as a seller once they have my cashapp information, and send me dirty coins, but lightning and liquid do a good job of mixing the trail.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think I have it all figured out. I'm just trying to process through the best viable options. Open to correction or info.

I've thought about this, and I'd be happy for input.

Both parties put their money into robosats multisig for security purposes, however, If I am buying someones bitcoin in exchange for fiat trash, it isn't seen as a transaction by the kyc entity. It would simply show that I am sending some person $x and in the details, i can say anything i want from "gift" to "thanks for the nuclear weapons boss". They also have in person and check options, but the turn around time is anxiety inducing. In fact, you don't even have to have bitcoin setup on cashapp to use it to send people money for this.

If I were just starting out buying bitcoin in 2024 and didnt know what to do, chances are, I'd shoot myself in the foot and buy kyc sats before I understood the privacy implications. Because of that, I think purple pilling is going to be added to my process, cause robosats requires a retainer and I'm not rich enough to give everyone 10k sats. Get them on Nostr, make them stack zaps via POW while learning about bitcoin. Once they've stacked 10k zaps, then they can effectively use robosats without ever buying KYC. This is happening yall.

I noticed that when I make a big deal about people buying #bitcoin for the first time #nonKYC, they are more likely to buy than if I say, "Just buy some on CashApp."

Something about telling people they can pull one over on their tyrant overlords seems to help the orange pill go down easier.

Here is my walkthrough process for new people:

1. Download Aqua Wallet

2. I send them 10k sats

3. Download Tor

4. Navigate to Robosats

5. Use your 10k sats as a down payment retainer to buy your sats

6. Keep stacking to 2-5 mil sats

7. Buy/Setup a Blockstream Jade

8. Send your sats into your newly created cold storage wallet but keep about 100k in Aqua wallet

9. Repeat 6-8

whats a viable alternative?

I see this as a win. Stupid? Yes, but most people still don't understand that you can buy fractions of a bitcoin πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

When we pay someone for work, I always ask them if they accept bitcoin. So far, I haven't had any luck, but I find myself becoming more sarcastic and aggressive about it the more I ask.

Me: Do you guys accept bitcoin?

Plumber: uh....no.....we

Me: Oh, y'all still like that government trash.

Plumber: uh well haha

Me: Remember this conversation a couple years from now when the price of btc was only $100k.
