Taken in its generality though, I don't see the argument against it. Politicians are, to a rounding error, opportunistic and self-serving. That's why they're in politics, instead of doing something more productive.
Have principles. Show moral courage. Take time to contemplate the view on the other side of the fence. Be intellectually honest and impartial. Stand up for what you believe consistently even when it applies to someone that has different opinions than you. Just be decent and fair.
