I asked a person today why they still use a fax machine: Because I can send them a document without having to open my email. I am busy. I don't want to see my inbox. I don't want to type my password. I want to just send them this document and move on.

Have we lost the plot in interface design? 🤔

decouple inbox from outbox

Needs to happen automagically. Every nostr app that requires specification of outbox and inbox relays intimidates its users

That's why we have a community relay preloaded in the client, that they can join. If they define their own, they can switch.

This is the way. Pre-load the config. Maybe even by way of invite from a friend.

Yes, and we allowed things like profile data and zaps, etc. without a subscription, so that it can work as a bootstrap for newbies, even if they have no money.

In a yet to be broken down ticket by way of nostr:npub1aeh2zw4elewy5682lxc6xnlqzjnxksq303gwu2npfaxd49vmde6qcq4nwx there is a pre-fund a wallet for a friend onboarding invite

https://github.com/damus-io/damus/issues/1696

BTW, I’m a fan of what nostr:npub1yzvxlwp7wawed5vgefwfmugvumtp8c8t0etk3g8sky4n0ndvyxesnxrf8q is doing now by integrating NWC in the client using their own node (Uncle Jim-style) so anyone can instantly spin up a wallet during the onboarding process. Is it custodial? Yes. But does it solve a big problem? Absolutely.

Yakihonne is a great option. Had issues with wallet creation. Will try again.

It worked perfectly for me. You can even use the NWC connection as your default Alby wallet.

I was just able to zap from Damus to my Yakihonne Lightning address with no problem.

fax machine guy makes a good point. too many distractions all around us

I get his point.

Similarly, at the office, we used to have a printer that could scan to email. I thought that was great.

But the UX was terrible, especially to manage contacts. Had to remember the email address correctly and type it in (no qwerty keyboard).

So I almost never used it. Only to send myself scans...

Yeah, I remember those. Terrible UX indeed.

You got it right 👍..

Tools are to solve a problem .. no one outside the small community of devs care for details .. I mean when I buy a hammer ..All I want to do is drive nails .. not do a PhD in hammer design :-)

Software tools too need to solve a problem .. twitter did that in 2006 .. iPhone in 2003 .. the good news is our problems have increased manifold since then :-) ..we need more tools ..new tools ..better tools !

Yes. Trying to be everything is retarded

You realized you replied to the creator of Amethyst, right?

Yes

md's use all the pagers and all the fax machines. outlaw them both

I thought pagers were good, no?

Depends where you source them from

Lol, I forgot about that

good?

I still use the copy machine (we all know why)

Would love to have the ability to just post to #nostr without having the distractions of a feed!

Have you heard of Shipyard.pub?

No I didn’t, will check it out, thanks!

Most people use it for scheduling their posts to go out at a later date/time, but it's fundamentally a client for distractionless posting.

Just do unfollow everyone and post. Isn’t this a solution to your problem?

Nope, sometimes I just want to share something without distractions, sometimes I like to scroll through what’s new…

yes, physical buttons and analog dials.. was peak UI. 😎

UI / UX.

How we interface drives everything.

Eg 1

Before cable TV, the user had to physically turn a knob to the signal (channel) they wanted. Cable would never have scaled under this method. Solution: the remote - simple UI / UX = 10000+ channels.

Eg 2

Digital payment adoption. A plastic card that inserted into a device which had a familiar UI. The number pad looked like a phone dialer, press 4 - 6 digits, payment made.

Eg 3

Swiping a screen - iPhone changed everything. A baby knows how to swipe. Intuitive UI / UX.

=====

This is the challenge for Nostr apps. It's why Bitcoin ETFs broke the cardinal rule "not your keys". Users are creatures of habit. In order to scale anything, it must be braindead simple.

I love Nostr, I think Amythst is an awesome client but I can't onboard grandma to this tech the way I could teach her the remote, the bank card and how to use the phone to take a picture.

=====

Is self custody the hurdle that drives most toward centralized services? Solve the custody "lift" keeping key pairs and seed phrases safe and without the brain damage and the world will beat a path to the door.

I bought a car last year. I already have a motorbike for past 12 years. My new car is quite tech heavy compared to my 12 years old commuter motorcycle. In the last 12 years I never felt irritated with the bike but within just one year, I have started feeling like may be a simpler car would have been a more practical choice.

May be this is human nature... We always want what we don't have. Like I wanted a tech heavy vehicle when I was riding the motorbike. But now I want a simple car while driving a tech heavy one.

I still use a fax machine.

Perhaps Amethyst should allow receipt of faxes 😆

Some gov'ts still require the use of a fax machine to communicate with them. Its like they never left 1999. :D
