Zap is a tip or "thanks". I think likes and zaps coexist well side by side.
Also with likes one has some sense how many people see the note. Helps with "shouting into the black digital void" effects for people with small nr of followers.

I donโt understand why there is such a push for this. Optionality, sure. But a like is just a head nod or a โhey I read and appreciate your reply.โ If itโs not feeding an algorithm I donโt see the problem.
I get value for value. But we donโt give people money in conversations in person, so why would we do it in a digital analog?

Its too ubiquitous already. Jack is absolutely right on the likes topic but unless there is a general consensus across most major clients to fully kill it, there will be always be a lot missed and a lot of people who have no clue that their appreciation went completely unnoticed. That doesn't sound like the rich, engaging experience that nostr offers.
I think all you big devs need to have a risk/reward discussion on the subject and either rip the bandage off or leave it alone. ๐
