running knots will literally do nothing different. even if everyone was running knots, if you really wanted to get around tx censorship you would just use miner apis instead of knots p2p. They would be incentivized to do this if it earned them more fees.

Once his client has total control, he would be able to hardfork at will: make smaller blocks, censor all data transactions. You could argue this is a good thing if you were short sighted. In reality it would mean bitcoin is whatever luke thinks bitcoin should be. he would rule bitcoin with total control.

This is why we have a review process in core… who thinks luke ruling bitcoin is a good thing?

I'm gonna keep that guy as far away from my node as possible

Since I started following my manager's new trading plan, I've seen a significant improvement in my financial situation. I'm truly grateful for the support I'm receiving—earning $150,000 as a beginner in crypto trading is a huge milestone. If you're looking to get started, I highly recommend reaching out to Mrs. Susan. Totally. Never trust one dude

I don't think any client will have total control. I'm wondering, is it theoretically possible to go back to how it was before, i.e. pre-taproot where large amounts of data couldn't be stored in a tx? Maybe I'm not making sense because I don't understand all the ways data can be included.

Yes it’s possible but would require a fork.

You can get creative and find any which way to include 'data'; the only things where you couldnt is with a hash or pubkeys you actually have the private key for. Well you could...but that would require bruteforcing...proof of work if you will ;)

Freedom is when protocol abusers store JPEGs on my node, but it is not when a dude brings a competitor implementation to the table which is unlikely to gain total control over the network???

knots does nothing to stop jpeg abuse

So at this point what exactly are you gaining ? A bitcoin that is more likely to be taken over by a single person?

If Luke were to make changes that no one agrees with we would NOT update or run and older version of core like what users are doing right now

It's quite possible not enough people who matter are paying attention to knots code.

This is a real risk factor.

The moment he does something stupid, the moment I switch to Core implementation as I did with Knots.

Knots node runners do not relay spam. The less nodes relaying spam the less chance of spam ending up in a block.

Simply not true, as long as there is some percentage of nodes that are relaying it, it will make it to a miner. Like i said, even with knots total control, people would just switch to miner apis in apps to broadcast

Yeah it will make it to a miner but less regularly

blocktimes are every ten minutes. Theres no possible way it would have any noticeable effect. I doubt you could delay them for more than a second or two

You are making lots of assumptions

Like that spammers would pay more money to spam in OP_RETURN then the SW for the so called health of the network.

It’s not that knots would prevent all spam but it definitely would slow it down and make it tougher for spammers to propagate throughout the network.

Look these guys already have libre relay and disregard OP_RETURN limits but their transactions don’t get picked up by the network because no one runs Peter Tards spam blaster.

Let’s have a civil conversation about this on nostr:npub1c0rnyyhmdnvg6xkvrrmgf8rxp3r28jtjhad8vmze8rgxf87aed7qlltlvg šŸ’¬ we can let nostr:npub1ymt2j3n8tesrlr0yhaheem6yyqmmwrr7actslurw6annls6vnrcslapxnz moderate lol

*cough cough*

I think I’m suddenly coming down with something and conveniently won’t be able to attend

Not true.

"Information wants to be free" - a very old cypherpunk aphorism. Bitcoin's P2P network is gossip, by design - it only needs a few nodes to know about a transaction, and miners are strongly incented to be well connected to find out about txs as early as possible.

A version of bitcoin where it was easy to filter out transactions at the p2p level would be a complete failure in its most important property - censorship resistance.

Bad take. If it’s not a consensus rule it’s a preference. Core removing the ability to set a limit is ludicrous. The OP_RETURN is a feature not bug. nostr:note1sgs3mh7m49v5qj7gg3e3jvf47nhzwn7f59vepce74gs7s2snmfkqm90ml6

Ordinals are not related to OP_RETURN and, henceforth, not related to JPEGS. Does knots is keeping the OP_RETURN size limit?

I’ve mentioned multiple times that Luke as solo maintainer is not ideal and would be great if more developers joined the review process. Developers like yourself are basically saying they know best and ignore valid criticism, this is why node runners are opting to run knots in droves. Your argument that a miner api would pop shows that the OP_RETURN limit is doing its job. All miners would have to opt into this API and then the hashers will decide where to point their hash and can boycott miners who accept spam transactions. Forcing preferences are bound to fail.

Yep. Well said

Yep well said

No developers would work under luke. People posting here have obviously not been around that long or know who they are supporting

Given devs who don’t know Luke, why wouldn’t they work with him?

Luke is a bit rigid and has some odd quirks, but he has been pretty consistent from the very beginning. At least he has presented an alternative implementation and he does have other eyes on his code

Been here long enough to know Luke, while a bit odd, has been saying the same shit for years. The best plebs all hate core and at least run core + another implementation, frequently Knots. The core team is woke, queer, retarded and compromised. Some are working for Chainlabs which have a huge very obvious conflict of interest from a financial incentive perspective

Devs like jb55 still in denial

A review process that blocks people when they bring up legitimate concerns. Right. Sure.

It’s just posturing and overreaction

The big money that matters ain’t runnin knots anytime soon.

No big exchange will run knots

So it’s just aesthetic which is cool

Just showing the vitality of the network people will switch everyone doesn’t agree on everything that’s good for long term health.

Good thing big money don’t matter

Oh, so you don't actually understand Bitcoin. Cool (hint, is is exactly what matters)

Basically unless something violates consensus rules it's pointless trying to stop it, is that accurate?

I like to think that if something doesn't violate consensus but is dumb as shit (jpegs) the game theory of transaction fees will ultimately win out.

we should go slow #ossify 🧔

ā€œeven if everyone was running knots, if you really wanted to get around tx censorship you would just use miner apis instead of knots p2p. They would be incentivized to do this if it earned them more feesā€. Then let them do that. The opreturn limit should be configurable. There’s likely to be more bullshit spam due to its removal than actual useful monetary implementations.

There's also the question of how many people audit the 1370 commits that make Knots different. It's basically a giant patch set on top of Bitcoin Core, similar to what Liquid does. Despite my issues with Luke, I do trust him to not steal peoples coins.

But that's not an ideal trust model. Part of the problem is a lack of upstreaming. And that's not always because of a fundamental disagreement on functionality. Sometimes the patches just don't meet the review bar for Bitcoin Core. That itself isn't the end of the world either, but it does make comparative review harder.

But I hear OpenSats is going to fix that with grants? :-)

There might not be great answer, but the wrong answer is to make it easier for spammers to spam

Same thing as San Francisco having vans with clean needles for homeless people to shoot heroin. ā€œThey are going to find a way to do drugs anyway, so let’s make it easier and ā€˜safer’ by giving them clean needlesā€.

That worked out real well

The issue at hand is user preference elimination by core, the actual effect these preferences have isn't as important.

I do think that this specific issue is overblown, but it's a good catalyst for people waking up to the current paradigm & supporting a competing solution.

That solution isn't going to actually accomplish anything if it's just LukeVision.

Ahh yes, we should just all give into the tyrants of Core because they removed us from the discussion and rammed a terrible change through for their own interests.

Nah, I'm running knots. Filters were working and the number of non-standard OP-returns skyrocketing is going to soon represent that.

Luke isn't perfect, but he cares about Bitcoin being money. Core maintainers have lost the plot and abused their powers.

wow i’m happy for you

or sorry that happened

running knots

To each their own. running 1300+ unreviewed changes 😬

i prefer to not have daddy core tell me what i can and can’t do. luke is not ruling bitcoin by giving node runners more options. have fun fear mongering. free knots marketing

I mean if that change ever went through and it was that important to you, you could maintain a single reverted patch on top core instead of 1300+ changes. Seems safer… but depends on your tolerance for running unreviewed code

here is a link so you can review yourself: https://bitcoinknots.org/files/28.x/28.1.knots20250305/bitcoin-28.1.knots20250305.desc.html

but please keep me safe daddy tell me what to do daddy

You can do whatever you want man like i give a fuck šŸ˜‚

thank you daddy

just checking in to apologize for being a dick and acknowledge that i was wrongšŸ˜€ i felt my heart was in the right place…

all good, no need to apologize

felt necessary, cheers

I wonder if a code review contract could be baked into the protocol for protocol changes. For example, with every halving, a doubling of reviews by previous committers is required. Eventually it results in it being near impossible to make changes to the software and the network ossifies as the bulk of committers die off.

I guess that would add a perverse incentive to frantically get new people to contribute just for the sake of keeping open the possibility of contributions. So nevermind.

There is nothing sacred about code review but I guess it's what we've got.

Centralized control in core corrupts, from datacarriersize and now op-return, proper opposition required to keep all parties honest and vulnerable to vote.
