THE nostr retention rate is less than 1%

Hard to say if this is terrible or close to normal - my gut says not good

We probably have a bunch of low hanging fruit opportunities in improving this.

Maybe we need a “gateway” client? 🤷‍♂️

I believe I’ve designed the solutions already if people just look :)

😁

I really like the gallery feed in nostur

Can’t find it

You mean you can’t find it, or it’s not designed well and people can’t find it?

No I mean I don’t see that view. Maybe I need to update

Updated but still don’t see it

Press home and at the top there are headed - feed, hot, gallery, explore, articles

TestFlight? 🤷‍♂️

Gallery, Hot and Articles will only show if your account follows more than 10 people

Interesting 🤔

In b4 someone says it's the user's fault.

Blame the normies!!

I’m a normie (I just coincidentally posted another post about being a normie, at the same time as you posted this ⬆️), and I love that nostr has a community feel. But for new people, that actually may make it more difficult to join into the conversations, when it feels like everyone already knows each other, and are speaking their own language.

Also, hard to figure out who to follow.

Well, firstly, welcome to Nostr.

There is a lot of lingo, and a lot of established groups. Thanks for sticking it out. Everyone here is great and they'll explain everything and include you! Promise! I came along after a bunch of the big names were already established and many of my best friends were made here.

We need to hear more from folks like you, so be sure to speak up. It's a community effort, so everyone needs to be reminded what your experience was like! ❤️

Yep.

Ah yes it can be tricky. If you just add your nip300 to the snorkel client you can easily fiatjaffify the relay list to accommodate zap modules to find people. That should help for starters.

😂😂

I jumped in a few days ago. If you aren't a complete prick or shill, you'll be fine. Really. There are those here, but almost everyone else is someone I can respect without having to feel like I want to reach through the screen and throttle. So far, yes a pretty rad experience. Just be you and you'll eventually find your own comfy niche.

wen swipeable bite-sized video content with custom algos

pls don’t actually, i’ll be glued to my phone

Amethyst minus the algos

🎯

curious how they’ve done it 🤔

It'll just be videos about b!tcoin tho 👀 lol

What does that mean exactly?

New users aren’t staying.

Oh, that is bad

nostr:npub1r0rs5q2gk0e3dk3nlc7gnu378ec6cnlenqp8a3cjhyzu6f8k5sgs4sq9ac when I first tried nostr through Damus, my first post was "There are only like 3 people on this whole app"! 😂 I myself after saying that kinda forgot about it on my phone till I had the thought to open it again and I had like 20 welcome messages.

day one

arrive to #nostr

click the 🔎 🪐

be like…

😂😂

How do you get that number?

Nostr.band

what retention ? newcomers?

Lack of content.

Most of us don’t want to make content.

Generally speaking no one I personally know is really willing to make the switch.

Most people don’t care about freedom of speech until it’s to late & most are used to self censorship as it’s being forced unknowingly.

The use cases that will bring many haven't been found yet. Many of us know that a Twitter replacement is great but isn't going to move the needle. It's going to be marketplaces, streaming, using nostr to coordinate other apps (uber, for example), and uses we cant yet imagine that'll make nostr invaluable. LFG!

The many are already here. They are just not staying.

We need more Degens. Degens are the lifeblood of a new ecosystem.

Can’t agree with that.

Satire died here too? Pity haha. Don't worry fren. Degens won't like it here.

We’re early

For trusted users, and we definitely need to filter out loosely linked accounts, it's about 7% over 30 days. This is a better time scale for something so new. The other thing is this is more an issue to solve at app level. It seems a few apps have analytics so they should look at how changes affect this.

What’s a trusted user

That's however Nostr.band defines it. Think it's something like page rank.

Ok but how do we know this number is accurate without knowing the definition nor if that makes sense in terms of retention?

The former is a good question for nostr:npub1xdtducdnjerex88gkg2qk2atsdlqsyxqaag4h05jmcpyspqt30wscmntxy, retention though is definitely meaningless if it includes easily generated keys and profiles.

i think making the most of what we already have goes a long way. content has both notes and replies and maximising both is high value. But not splatting it like a labyrinth. Also making user curation of their feed fun might improve how users wants their own algo set up - and this might improve content visibility.

What does this look like in practice?

I've just joined and I am so confused! Any tips on things to do?

Sure! Welcome 🤗

You can explore nostr like Twitter on any of the “clients” (apps). Damus (iOS), primal, amethyst (android), snort and many others.

You can live stream if you like at zap.stream or watch streams in amethyst, nostrudel or zap.stream.

You can search and follow hashtags (we don’t have algos yet)

You can set your a lightning wallet and “zap” people - earn money and spend money.

You can start and join communities (amethyst, satellite.earth)

I mostly hang out on Damus and Snort and zap.stream

Thanks so much for this! Snort wasn't showing me anything and when I changed to categories like the trending ones, it was taking ages to load (or not loading). I've landed on satellite.earth and primal at the moment and that seems alright. I'm a bit confused by the relay thing. Should I be getting more or just using the default?

Np.

Default is a good starting point.

Relays are basically servers you can send notes to and retrieve from.

There are many to avoid a central point of authority. But you can explore them on your own over time.

One thing you can do is look at what relays other people use and add them to your list. You don’t need many. 8-12 is good but even less is fine.

I'm just surprised that Zaps haven't been built into WAY more apps and "things".

They're legit world changing.

nostr:npub1sg6plzptd64u62a878hep2kev88swjh3tw00gjsfl8f237lmu63q0uf63m is that Hi Fi music app going to incorporate them? Fingers 🤞 👀

Didn’t realize it was that bad

Well, we have no benchmarks for what is good or bad (that I know of)

Maybe we need THE memes.

Media hosting to solve, and the rest is pretty much in place.

In regards to retention?

To have the UX up to par what’s customary in other tech platforms: you never think about (anything) when uploading a video on IG, Snap, YT, X, Mastodon etc. It just works and you expect the files to be there as long as you have an account.

It’s still confusing and hard to figure out how to do it in some clients but overall it’s not clear where to host, how long will it last there and what are the best options to make sure that you have the content in the future.

I guess I never think about any of that on Damus or Snort. Both handle media uploads ok.

I believe that NIP-96 is necessary to solve three things about this:

1: Nostr clients without media upload (because of the complexity of connecting to the different API's).

2: Freedom for the user to choose which media servers to use.

3: Sovereignty of their own data (if they want to, otherwise they can use an external provider).

nostr:npub1t89vhkp66hz54kga4n635jwqdc977uc2crnuyddx7maznwfrpupqwra5h9 is working with his team to solve the content management issue.

Yesterday I was also told about Hornets, I still don't see clear to use relays for multimedia 😀

1️⃣🌲

“Decentralized file storage systems require chunking to prevent delay attacks caused by large files. Without cryptographically verifiable file chunking (Merkle branches), users would need to download the entire file before verifying it. If the file's hash turned out to be incorrect after spending a lot of time downloading the large file, then it can cause a delay in service because the user would need to restart that file download process with another relay.

The delay in service can be prevented when using the Scionic Merkle DAG Trees to verify each chunk of the file one by one (branch by branch) immediately after downloading them…”

2️⃣💾

“H.O.R.N.E.T. relays let relay operators view how much data each nostr app is occupying, allowing them to toggle which applications and file types they want to support.”

https://hornetstorage.com/ #nostr

I will take a look at it, thank you very much for the information 😀

Browse #nostr without HTTP to free it from the centralized web. 🐝

Fuck off from my house

up

When you say #nostr retention..do you mean a specific client or the entire nostr eco system .. asking cuz in last one month , I tried at least 20 different clients before settling on one each for Android and Browser .. for all the other clients , it would appear as if I dropped off but I am using nostr at least thrice a day !

I got the numbers from nostr.band. I think it looks at npub activity which doesn’t care about which client you use. nostr:npub1xdtducdnjerex88gkg2qk2atsdlqsyxqaag4h05jmcpyspqt30wscmntxy might have more insight into how it works considering he made it 😉

In the beginning, lots of people end up making many pairs of keys cuz they think every client might need one till they discover Alby or something like that .. I sacrificed three nsecs before making sure I have one solidified for all the nostr clients .. I guess the important matrics is NOT early drop offs .. the important matrics is what happens if someone sticks for say three months .. do they find meaning and purpose here !

It’s probably a smaller portion of users who try different apps

l see .. but.. people won't see the value of nostr unless they use their keys across multitude of apps - social , productivity and beyond .. the mantra and usp of nostr is "one login for all your web " .. frankly ..from a end user perspective .. that is the biggest and most heart warming prospect .. trust me cuz I know so many who are so disillusioned with tech because they have hundreds of passwords and user IDs to remember :-) and despite password vaults and browsers offering to make you good passes - nothing works .. I end up resetting at least three passwords every week :-) .. this week it was Hulu , Disney plus and ESPN :-)

My guess would be that retention rate on any of these twitter alts (I know I know) are very low. But I would guess that this is the low end of low. My feed is almost entirely nuked after muting a handful of b!tcoinisms and b!tcoin, not sure all that many people stay for that, and there's not too much else. And what is left is often what makes it past the filter eg images about b!tcoin lol. Plus new people don't even have the filter lolol. I actually think quieter is preferable to louder and 'just b!tcoin'. Quieter there is at least hope more people will arrive. B!tcoin spam is less promising from a noob perspective potentially cos they can't see this going beyond and growing out of the pre existing group here.

Anyway.

I wonder if the Reddit wave will come and go like the Taibbi wave. Where did those people end up I wonder? 🤔

Try following more people? My mute-heavy snort feed seems fine.

Yep, I do pick up people here and there, I don't mind slow too much tho :)

Patience! All nostr has to do is exist, it's blindingly obvious that it's the future of everything 😃

I already find enough content that I am here because I want to - and it's not bitcoin content.

There is a cost to this entire ecosystem - funding, server costs, opportunity costs, all sorts of costs. If it were possible to "just exist" that would be great, but we live in a world with actual costs, so I'm not gonna sit on my butt and wait ;(

Be good to have at least one good none bitcoin group of users I think. Though I suppose it'll always be somewhat low as it so easy to create new accounts, maybe a lot of the lost accounts are just devs test accounts... I have a few!

Deploy the E-girls ? Or are they gone too ?

Mostly gone I think

FUCK EM

So we are the 1%ers? Maybe not yet, but after fiat goes to 0. 😄

I've stayed. Maybe it will improve as people are excised from other platforms. It's probably too Bitcoin and freedom related feeds.
