That's the beauty of it all. You do not have to meet some arbitrary number set by some large corporation to start earning. You can have zero followers and start earning for your content. This doesn't exist anywhere else.
And that's only the public zaps. Some of us like #privacy in our financial transactions. #Bitcoin fixes that too if you know what you're doing.

Seems like LN invoices included by Primal in zap receipts have empty payment_hash field. The invoice parser I use discards those invoices as invalid. I guess I'll have to patch it, as this is an optional field for zap verification purposes - they generate a proper invoice for the actual payment.
They also strip the description/commit hash from the invoice in zap receipts, which seems to go against nip57: "SHA256(description) MUST match the description hash in the bolt11 invoice." It looks like I will have to strip this verification logic on my end since in practice many wallets violate nip57 anyway and everyone is just trusting the wallets.

zap verification is even bigger pain in the back and probably not worth it in terms of support requests ala "why are zaps not showing up?"

Maybe a table for "Zap verification" across clients, with problematic cases in comments? My guess is many clients do very little of it, and if they eventually start doing it they might stumble on the same issues.

damus ios has always verified zaps. it also verifies profile signatures so that noone can fake profiles. also when constructing threads it walks nostrdb which verifies all notes. we just haven't completed the full nostrdb migration everywhere yet.

you don't need to pay money to claim zaps. you can setup a custodial lightning wallet or a cashu wallet for free and get zaps instantly. you don't have to manage channels or anything. it's super easy.
you can configure your feed however you want, but this is going to be client specific. you can try muting words, profiles, etc. i will say that this applies to threads too. some clients handle massively large threads better than others. i like threading on Damus, Coracle, Nostrudle the best.

It is fun to see people using "sats" considering how hard I was affectionately laughed at in early 2011 when I suggested on Free Talk Live that satoshis be labeled the smallest increment of bitcoin. Nobody laughed thinking "bits" would be better as we all understood how stupid that thought was, but rather because nobody could conceive it being practical.
i would actually prefer to say bits. it makes more sense to people, imo. it's natural. sats or satoshis doesn't make sense, but whatever, i don't really mind in the grand scheme of things.
Bits have had an established meaning prior to bitcoin. And we needed a word for discussions rather than speaking in terms of millionths of a bitcoin and a H/T to the creator seemed appropriate. Are you okay with referring to 10 btc as a Finney?

as more people with larger followings join nostr, the network grows. more users equates to more zaps. economies of scale fixes the few having to do all of the zapping.

Sure, good point. I don’t know him at all and nothing against him personally- was speaking more generally though. You see it again and again, they show up, post some ‘based’ notes just to collect zaps but never actually participate in nostr, respond to anyone, or make any effort become part of the community. It’s just low hanging fruit and one other way to earn from producing social media ‘content’.
I’d rather see true #V4V artists getting $1000 in zaps than just another influencer, no matter who it is.

sure. i get that. it's a new concept. over the past two years, we've sent nearly 21 bitcoin. that's about $2,100,000 in today's terms. we're just crazy people sending people money for their content. if someone puts out a good blog post or article and i like it? ill send them some money. if someone post a banger song that i enjoy? ill send them some bitcoin. if someone creates a meme that makes me laugh. ill send them some bitcoin.
it's better than seeing ads. it's better than rage algos. it's all about a value exchange. zapping someone for content feels so much better than using a like or a reaction. likes are hollow and reactions don't have much value either. they don't mean anything in the grand scheme of things. but if you don't like it or don't understand it, then that's fine too. nostr is all about choices. don't want to send or receive zaps, then you do not have to do it! 😉

Yes, working. And btw you can use that money immediately to buy stuff. For example now I'm going to a farmers market where everyone accepts bitcoin on lightning, so I'm going to buy some veggies for the zaps I received.
For what it's worth I'm getting a bit more sats on Stacker News (that's also connected to nostr), but nostr profile is getting close recently.
I think one problem we have today is "lack of transparency" around how content creators are paid... Considering platforms are their boss, not users.
With nostr, we are the boss. But the thing is that we are so used to "free" content with ads (or ad blockers) that we have no idea what content is actually worth.
I think zaps and contributions should be more formalised, but in an open and voluntary way to be clear. Content creators can suggest a value, viewers can zap what they like, and together we all recreate a fair market.
I'm thinking more about video content providers and not memers, but why should any feature be limited to any category of a person?
The alternative is using a platform that pimps users out for the same purpose. I'd rather zap things and not have to deal with ads and all the other abuses you see on platforms.
