Fucking powerful
but the internet is not a parasite.
Yea he lost me a bit there. The Internet is a large reason we know about half the shit our government tries to get away with. The Internet is connection. How they use the internet is the problem. They captured the companies providing communication services and used them to feed people propaganda. Corporations are the problem.
What I think he means is social media and it’s cruel algorithms, which is what most people’s primary experience warn the internet is. They come in through Facebook and enter a world of bad opinions and worse attitudes, and divisions are exploited. His lived experience is what led him down the path he’s been on. He doesn’t want overnight fame, he just wants to be treated like a human being, with compassion and dignity. We all deserve that.

Totally agree that is probably what he means. But just saying "Internet bad" misses the mark by a wide mark for someone who wrote a song that so correctly identifies the problems we have.
It's just more nuanced than that. But yea I get the point of his message wasn't that nuance.

it’s just the flood of information and the lack of understanding from most of what is actually true.
That and at the same time an inability by most to consciously focus their attention.

Just a thought experiment. But do you think it's that same access to unlimited information with no effort along with social media that's ruining us.
It seems to me everyone who is on the Internet or has access to the Internet is so prideful and thinks they know everything. And consequently never listens because they think they already know everything.
I'd never blame unlimited access to information, in any way. You could call me a "free information absolutist" and that wouldn't be far from the truth. I think our societal problems largely boil down to:
- Limited opportunity for a lot of people. For a lot of people their tomorrow's don't look as bright as their yesterday's. This is in large part due to our monetary problems. The government is siphoning money away from the people through taxes and inflation. So people are in an "I'll get mine however I can fuck everyone else" mindset.
- Engagement algorithms used by social media, and the media in general. Fear, anger, envy, all the negative, anti-social emotions drive higher engagement. And companies stoke those flames for a buck. Nostr is a case study of this. Largely this network, anecdotally to me anyway, feels much more peaceful, free, caring, focused. And I think it's because we're not being force fed shit news and content custom made to incite us.
Hopelessness and propaganda. That's all you need to get people stirred up like they are these days.
I don't really blame free information nor do I think it should it be restricted in any way.
I just notice that almost everyone I see (and most people I know) stay inside watching "free" YouTube videos and reading "important" news articles online, and never have the time to go outside and socialize. Most are helpless if they leave the house without their phone.
I agree with your other points. I just think they are downstream from the problem of people not going outside.

I'm in Asheville now, just visiting. Spoke to homeless people in the streets. Similar stories. For myself I translate to interventionism is a proper failed experiment. Life is hard on a place it should not be. Not hard, impossible. I can share some money to pay for some meals, but none of that crap is going to change anything. Oliver Anthony if communicating at a level I can't, this is the way.
Man the first half of that hits hard. A moment of honesty and passion, and you had no want of the consequences and notoriety it brings. The message was meaningful enough to convey it thought.
Fame and clout and followers isn't what most want, despite their talent or capability.
Everyone just trying to sort this all out. And have an outlet to process that through. It resonates with others.
Yet still the end goal/meaning isn't about money. It's about the signal.
It all hits hard my wording is shit.
Replace internet with fiat social media companies.

I think you've made history. You say here you're not a good musician, but I think your songs say otherwise. I've always been addicted to music myself and of many dif styles, but not so much into folk until I hard your song. Its been listened at elast a hundred times and I still get goosebumps.
You have made history mister, wether you like it or not, in the true sense of the word. I think I've never witnessed that an absolute nobody has reached the exploding phenomenon that Rich Men North of Richmond has had. Your voice, the lyrics are powerful like few things in this often shallow world. Amazing! from 100k in the first week all the way to 200 million !!! I think smth like this has never happened in the history of humanity
Here comes the interesting part: as you say that the Internet is "a parasite" and not a net benefit for humans. I see its just a technology that can be used in different ways, but over time it trends towards the better and we can see it through e.g. the reach your music has had. That wouldn't have been possible before the world wide web. People are waking up in masses, more than we tend to think bc humans generally can't see exponential developments. Now honest ppl with a story to tell like journalist, doctors, blue collars, bitcoiners, austrian economists, have a plaform and cause impact on hugr numbers of ppl. Damn, I wouldn't be not even a 10% of the positive person I am today without it. My improvements came thanks to clear signal. It takes time but if you are hyper determined to grasp the truth you'll find it in the online noise.
Also, as you know, we live in a system that has increasingly rotten over a whole 20th century and I believe the cultural garbage we see on the web is a result of that. Call me too much of an optimist, but I believe gradually, then suddently internet & bitcoin will helped hugely to realign humanity to its true common sense balance it desperately needs, not the other way around.
I'm a nobody. But from a whole soul to another whole soul, I'd like to send you two books in particular that may put your views towards the internet and faith in the future like it did to me. I kind of felt with you there when you refer to the internet as a parasite, bc those were my thought back in time.
Thanks for your creations, Chris, from the depest sense of the heart. I hope you feel proud of what you do/did, bc thats an achievement very few man can reach. Faith in humanity, thanks in part to stories like yours.

Appreciate his honesty and telling his story. I don’t doubt that it has echos familiarity to many around the world. Damn shame that we got here and that our leaders (all of them) seem to be openly ignorant of the struggles. Fiat thinking makes turning a blind eye so easy.

I’m very happy that “we” (I don’t even remember how this all started) managed to put him rightfully under the spotlight. This is a great example of the good that the internet and communities like ours can do and should be the drive for more!
