I’m a sound engineer and music maker, I recently took all my music off streaming platforms and my only SM is here and the Fediverse. The Fediverse still brings me more income than here, predominantly from Bandcamp sales.
It’s worth doing the maths for streaming. For most musicians it’s not worth it imho.

I think at this point one reason I haven't deleted my fb account is because I have a decent network that I hope to successfully pursuade to join me here overtime and because I have lots of family and irl contacts there that allows me to stay connected to and in the know of what's happening in their lives.
Also, my business page was hacked a few months ago and taken over. Eventually access was revoked from hackers but not returned to me. So I am just gathering emotional strength and focus to start a small claims court and sue meta. As I don't really want my page of 16+ years sitting there on the internet with several months of explicit vulgar daily content under my name representing me for the unforeseeable future.
As far as X. I've turned off notifications. But I have linked it to nos.social so anything going up there comes from my Nostr account. Other than that I don't have energy to spend time there. I built my audience there over 16 years ago and majority of those contacts back then moved onto other platforms as I did a while back too (so my following count has become obsolete). So I don't have much exposure there but even a little is still something... In directing people over to Nostr. 🤷🏻♀️
I used to teach and have online training products for entrepreneurs and marketers for all the social media platforms and how to effectively use for online entrepreneurs including Twitter, fb, IG. But at some point I got super burned out and super turned off by it all... And soon the universe just hit a giant reset button by burning all those assets I'd built, which I took as a sign it's time for a new chapter or more so book. And the opportunities which I may have had and held there slowly faded away... I tried to keep some kind of engagement as I was going through a massive internal rearrangement and life shifts of value systems and paths... But ultimately unless you are diligently slave laboring for the algorithm Gods and selling your soul eventually any momentum I might have had ultimately died.
Which is why I am hungry and yet excited and committed in investing my life force energy and full devotion to supporting the stability and growth of a protocol that aligns with my highest core values of freedom on every level. There is seriously not a bone or a tissue in my body that does not say "Noooooooo"to that old outdated paradigm and world. The opportunities that might have been there for me are non existent as the dissonance to it in my being is too loud. In reality I left those places long before I found Nostr.

It’s one of the reasons why I’m here. It’s a gold mine and diamond mine in one. But some people don’t have the vision to see it that way. They can’t envision the future with Nostr. I can. If that’s not a big enough driver to eventually sway the influencers then we don’t need them. (I also didn’t have social media before this, blue collar construction worker here).
My point is that nostr itself isn’t going to bring them here as nostr isn’t going to pay their bills like every other platform which imho mean the majority of normies won’t use nostr as they mostly want to watch the influencers

I'd say, use those accounts or platforms to drive traffic here. Let me explain. You open a store but no one knows about it other than the people within the neighbourhood. If you want to reach out beyond your town and neighbourhood, you need to have online exposure. You need somehow to use your existing accounts(tikrok, x, fb, etc) to focus about #nostr and drive them to come here. Yes, #nostr has a lot of opportunities. However, all is good for the early adopters . But for non-tech savvy, non-bitcoiners and slave to the centralised social media, it would not mean anything to them unless it affects their livelihood or affects the stuff that they truly cares — access to those platforms, family and income.
So how do we invite them? Use the same platforms to raise awareness. Btw, this strategy was used by Tiktok that made Tiktok the way it is now (one of).
People love incentives, other than censorship-resistant, what else can we offer? How do we convince people with over decades of work built on those social platform to move here? This is worth a ponder that our community must take seriously if we want to expand.
Lastly, let's not forget to focus on the fundamental non-functional requirements for #nostr — relays' security (not long ago we were bombarded by spams and from a decent source, we have not had pentesting done for nostr).

I’m a full time dad and husband and member of my local community. The spare time I have to be social online is now spent on Nostr because it’s the type of online future I want for myself and my kids. Even if I wanted to, I wouldn’t even have time to waste trying to run accounts on other platforms. Life is too precious. It would be time wasted.
I still use X. I post nothing. Zero. Never have.
But I follow accounts that don’t exist here. And it’s been great. I be learnin shit sometimes.

The reason people adopt a new technology is because they perceive some usefulness that they couldn't get elsewhere, and they find it easy to use. Right now, to most people, Nostr is simply Twitter with less users. Adoption will accelerate once more apps are built and utility explodes. Ease of use is also important.

In case I need a job one day. I found my last job through a connection I used to work with 11 years prior! But that’s a bad example because I didn’t reach out to her on LinkedIn because I had her contact info.
Those connections you speak of should be stronger than social media. IMO you would have their contact info and not need the application to assist you in that regard. I was in the same situation during Covid and got my job from my previous boss also 11-12 years prior. Just my two sats anyways!

I *want* to leave Facebook because it's trash, but unfortunately no matter how hard I try, I can't get my friends and family to use private messengers like Signal, or even alternative social media like MeWe, the Fediverse and Nostr. To be fair, it'd be pretty difficult to get the average person to sign up for Nostr, at least as long as the overwhelming majority is BTC/XMR content. Don't get me wrong, that's part of why I'm here, but we need more creators posting average-day content here. It's part of why I chat about subjects I enjoy, from IT/cybersec to tea to music and games.
I mean, if I can't even get my family members to do a quick switch to Signal, or go through the quick and uncomplicated process of signing up for a MeWe account, I really don't think they're going to take the time to learn how Nostr keys work, only so they can log in and see post after post about Bitcoin.
As for X, I still use it because I have a nice community of folks that I talk with there. I'm generally able to avoid the politics and drama with that circle of friends, we usually just chat about tech, tea, Japan and so forth.
At the end of the day, I'm purple pilled in the sense that I see Nostr as very important, but I also don't think we necessarily have to be Nostr-exclusive. Removing people from big tech networks is good, but we also have social tech that's still really good for privacy and freedom. MeWe recently decentralized using the Frequency blockchain as its means of handling authentication and signing of actions. The Fediverse is fantastic for the fact that it lets you find a community you like and curate what federated posts you see.
Nostr is great, it has a lot of potential, but I don't think it could ever possibly reach mainstream heights even with new features simply because the key system and the lack of content variety make it hard for people who don't care about Bitcoin, libertarian politics and so forth.

Nah, I'm definitely aware of how they manipulate, that's a big part of why I want to leave. Unfortunately, most of my friends/family don't care. I tell them, they don't care, usually because of ye olde "nothing to hide" argument. It's frustrating, because their apathy toward privacy and dystopian algorithms is directly impacting me, whether they think so or not.
It's why I try to use other platforms like the ones I mentioned to get them on board with alternative options. I'd only recommend Nostr to them if they're tech-savvy and show interest; otherwise, they'll go right back to the big tech slop they're comfortable with.

I did just deactivate my Facebook about an hour ago. I figure that Messenger is still available if they need to get in touch but otherwise, it will keep me offline, save me some time, and hopefully send a message that I'm not really interested in keeping Facebook in the long run. I've been saying that since way back when; I was a late arrival to social media, only joining Facebook in 2011 after friends at school insisted I should get it since the private school I was attending was going to shut down after that year, and at the time, better options didn't really exist.
I used to hang out on forums before that (and I still prefer forums to just about everything else), and even after I did get Facebook, I only friended people I knew in person. The whole "hundreds of friends" thing, which inexorably led to the influencer/follower thing, was always something I hated.

The content for the common user is far inferior to the content on Twitter. If you don’t have followers then the value prop of this platform is difficult to manifest.

I left Facebook years ago and I regret it. I lost contact with a lot of people that I now want to be able to reach. NOSTR has it's place and it's not going anywhere. It doesn't need to overtake other platforms, just be what it is and continue to improve and it will happen. Small moves. Just like bitcoin. No one ever expected the world's economy to switch to bitcoin as a primary means of exchange over fiat dollars. Looking back it will feel fast but were in the middle and it takes baby steps sometimes.

As the father of two Gen Z kids I can confidently say they couldn't give two shits about FB or the Gram. They have zero interest in X. They kinda like YT. They much prefer Snap and TikTok. The only FB they use is work related (meta has a platform for that) and as marketplace when they sell stuff.
I have a LinkedIn I never filled out. I do have a reddit but I very rarely use it, most of the time I do, I use browser and don't log in. I'm currently working towards unwinding myself from Google. Then I'm done.
