I’m not sure, but I think I have heard #[4] talk about this lately. If I had to guess from what I have heard/read, I would say bacteria because it is similar to aquaponics and I believe you want beneficial bacteria to populate the medium in the wicking chamber.

Yes. They are wicking beds. I’ve been posting as we built them, so you can take a look back at what is inside. I’m really excited. I think they will work well. Our plan is to cover them and make them look nice of course.
Yesterday we managed to do some clean up from our garden bed project so hubs could mow and weed eat. We got some things planted and built a tomato alley. I also had to relocate some strawberries and tame our blackberry bush with a trellis. Man I wish we had planted that thing closer to the fence. Playing with the 20-50 total carb per day range and monitoring my ketones. Yay for staying in ketosis, but could be higher. 0.9 mmol/L fasting ketone level this morning. I have had black coffee though. I don’t think that affects ketones?

I think we are going to try to buy them out and set up something similar here. Something like Joel Salatin’s Racken House though. Would be cool to section off parts of the worm bin and let chickens rotate through having access to different sections to turn the compost and eat worms. We have a carport that I am itching to convert to a racken house/ barn.

Yes, but it is tucked back under a metal carport, with sides and back enclosed, and under some big trees. He also had some old chest freezers under there to transfer worms to. Unfortunately he has some heath issues and has stopped actively work I the the system.
I first thing that comes to mind is our good quality XL 2-wheel wheelbarrow.

We will wrap our new wicking beds with some old metal roofing. (dark brown, but we could paint it or use the back side) that we have on hand and put treated boards along the top to cap it off.
Hubs wants to put reflectics or insulation behind the metal to help with heat and maybe help with freezing in the winter months. There will be a slight air gap from the metal cages, but that could be increased by attaching 1 x lumber along the top and bottom to screw the metal to. I’m thinking just screw the metal to the cages and move on. Budget is a factor.
Thoughts on whether insulating would be worth it?
