I’m putting together a list of Lightning wallets to recommend to customers who visit nostr:npub1key55ax33gkl50uqemvl4khrtqrhzm7wzpc7fhseutt5ddkcwcrqgxlt3h and want to learn how to buy a beer at the bar. ⚡️🍺

Requirement 1: It needs to be easy to set up for someone with minimal bitcoin knowledge, or has experience with crypto but never used Lightning before

Requirement 2: It needs to work without a VPN in New York (and the US in general) – this means NO Strike, Cash App, ZBD, Primal, Phoenix, WoS, etc.

This is a surprisingly hard list to write.

coinos also a good call

Breez was easy to setup. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Top of my list!

Minibits.cash

See requirement 1

Minibits is just as easy as making a nostr account.

Open app

select ln address name

Select a mint

How do they get sats to pay for food?

How does a new ln wallet get sats?

Some allow you to buy bitcoin.

But not in NY right?

Correct, not in NY. BTC needs to be swapped in.

Sounds like a great part time gig being a money changer...

That's the one I'm using.

neal@minibits.cash

Just had a thought - instead of bar tabs, alby hub friends and family connections. It's kind of a reverse tab since the patrons would pay up front, but then they have a lightning balance that theyre spending at the bar or can take anywhere else (until you rug them to teach them "not your node, not your sats")

Alby Hub is fantastic, but the setup process is a LOT for someone sitting at a bar. Plus it’s still invite-only.

Not if they just download alby go and you send them a nwc string. Probably the easiest onboarding i can think of, but I'm sure you don't want to be a custodian

Absolutely not.

What's the difference between that and a gift card? (Except that one is awesome) #weneedalawyer

An MSB license.

That's just semantics (and legal fees, and maybe jail time)

Check out nostr:npub1xv8mzscll8vvy5rsdw7dcqtd2j268a6yupr6gzqh86f2ulhy9kkqmclk3x you're not the only one with this idea :D

yes! I thinks those ideas are the exciting ones. with lightning we can do much cooler stuff than just to scan some code and pay.

check in at the bar and each drink will just automatically be charged with NWC… they will not pay upfront, the bar can request a payment and has a budget…

(if your bar rugs you then you’re for sure in the wrong bar. I also expect my bar to serve me decent drinks ;) )

Open Tabs :)

There's no strike and cashaapp in NY?

Nope

Cash App is nerfed, no Lightning.

No Strike at all.

nostr:npub1ajlrwgfj4yerhqf7ady03h7wmtk2qr3gs7h3sxcx83k05yld36sswpzx3q but customers will need to purchase Bitcoin first, send it to the wallet address, and move the on chain sats to lightning before using. Non custodial wallet and you cannot buy bitcoin in the wallet UI. Too many steps? 😬

So many steps.

I tried. Damn, this is a hard list to make. I don’t think it’s possible without the wallets that have been excluded from the running. Then again, I’m still a newb so I’m probably wrong. 🤷‍♂️

Here’s what I’ve got so far… tell me this won’t make a new user’s head spin.

Great list! Thanks for putting this together 🤝

But you still can’t buy Bitcoin directly from these wallets. The only work around would be customers with no bitcoin receive sats from someone who already has sats (a friend they came with or other patrons) on lightning that they would then send to the new wallet address.

This would be a quick and easy way to introduce someone to Bitcoin!

In New York, buying bitcoin is mostly limited to a small handful of approved exchanges, mainly Coinbase, Gemini, and Cash App, plus ATMs like LibertyX.

aqua/bull bitcoin wallet is probably your best bet TBH.

Not lightning, I know ... and the payments aren't quite as fast as lightning due to the liquid aspect... but they do work

but now you'll have to explain liquid hahaha.. can't win

It’s hard for me to recommend based on experience.

nostr:note1vzrj2zhxw3gnjx93fz2vrfaxvmmrxttyea67w62fz9x5hlwqq5hqepz259

Only hiccup I've had was when I tried ecash straight to aqua and vice-versa in the early days. since then been good.

that said, it's not my daily go-to. Mostly use it to loop back into lightning if sender doesnt have it... And to play around of course.

Coinos just works as well. full custodial but no app required and no initial setup needed.

just go to a webpage and you're ready.

Aqua is super easy. No paperwork.

Maybe Coinos.io would be good here. Sadly the best or easiest to use wallets are banned in NYS. Also try speed.app

Does Primal wallet activate with a NYS IP address / location?

Tbh any cashu wallet like ENuts, Minibits or Cashu.me would be best

These are super easy to setup and use. Everything is still lightning sats. Very easy and intuitive for noobs.

I've on boarded several folks directly to ecash and they send SATs no problem.

But if they need to get on-chain into Cashu/Ecash they still need to use nostr:npub1psm37hke2pmxzdzraqe3cjmqs28dv77da74pdx8mtn5a0vegtlas9q8970 which is a terrible mobile UX.

I do agree with you there; seamless onchain to lightning is very hard to do like a Phoenix, WoS, etc.

Best I'd say is a Breez, but not sure how on chain works there anymore

Confirmed, Breez is still awesome.

Lightning & onchain work great

Self-custodial

Built-in apps to buy services, including buy Bitcoin no KYC with azteco

Great job nostr:nprofile1qqsvjdqxakpvyvgpnncajecq3p8aahcl04dr973k3vgtycxvdyv0fggpzemhxue69uhk2er9dchxummnw3ezumrpdejz7qgcwaehxw309ahx7um5wghxvmt59emkj73wvf5h5tcpremhxue69uhkummnw3ez6ur4vgh8wetvd3hhyer9wghxuet59u9athfh been using your wallet since 2019 BitBlockBoom when nostr:nprofile1qqstn8du5qvy5vkw2kgyevn8kghyxjpre9l5rrekmt6a9hlsm4a4cfcpr9mhxue69uhhyetvv9ujuumwdae8gtnnda3kjctv9ucv0v8d did his lightning workshop

I Need to use Breez more!

You guys are making me take another look at Breez, which is probably the first or second Lightning wallet I ever used. I still remember how confused I was at the beginning, not understanding the relationship between on-chain transactions and channels, and I try to remember that when I think about onboarding new users.

Zeus

Love Zeus and recommend it, but setting up the embedded LND node and opening a channel can be a bit time-consuming.

Primal uses Strike so New York residents can’t sign up for it, though some people have discovered a workaround.

What happened to nostr:npub1l2vyh47mk2p0qlsku7hg0vn29faehy9hy34ygaclpn66ukqp3afqutajft implementation of eCash?

Why was it developed if no one wants it?

There’s a ton of different implementations!

These things take time to become available everywhere, the NIP hasn’t even been merged yet!

Patience!

It’s a very good idea. It would be a shame it doesn’t help in those type of situations where people cant get wallets.

Alby PWA

Requires an invite code and new users have to set up Alby Hub which is not something you can easily do on a phone.

Why would cash app require a VPN? I've used it a lot without a VPN.

It doesn’t, but New York residents don’t even see the Lightning feature because it’s disabled.

Oh that crazy New York law, forgot about that.

This looks promosing . Dont know their NY policy https://lifpay.me/en/

AQUA (but they betta write down their keys and it’s a real pain if you’re drinking in a bar).

facts. It was really tripping out on me as of late. All in all a great tool

Strike doesn't work in NY without a VPN?

It works without a VPN but you can’t sign up for it if you are a New York resident because you will fail KYC.

Why do New Yorkers fail KYC?

Because of this dude.

Oh! I thought it was nationwide in the states.

Mallers own stomping ground no less.

Behold the magic of federalism.

I’ve seen multiple Aqua to Lightning payments fail in a real-world environment.

Breez is on my list but how easy is it to get on-chain into Lightning without a third party service?

Great points

I used Zues connected to Alby Hub. but really just have them use Aqua

I’ve seen multiple issues with Aqua payments failing. It’s a challenge to recommend that one.

Ok I don’t feel like a complete moron anymore.

Lifpay maybe? I remember using this one for zaps at some point

What’s DJTs wallet of choice?

Yours.

Yup… every politicians favorite 😭

I’m a huge fan of Breez and have been using it for about a year without issues. But no NWC or Lightning address.

CoinOS is good, but I’m worried about onboarding new users to it bc of a WoS situation. I remember listening to the founders on a podcast discuss how they wanted to move towards users self hosting their own CoinOS instance in order to move away from a custodial wallet.

Primal doesn’t work in NY?

I’m with you. There’s a huge gap in understanding for most people, but this exercise is mainly about showing people how to quickly make a payment. I’m starting to gravitate toward Breez as the most effective solution under these circumstances.

And Primal “works” but if you try to register with New York as your location, it won’t allow you.

Amazing how all the #Bitcoin conferences are in the United States, yet its very hostile towards Bitcoin itself.

I like coinos wallet

That's awesome! 🙌 There are a lot of folks out there who could really use this info. Excited to see the wallet recommendations you come up with! Keep it up! ⚡️🍻 #AskNostr

For your minimal requirements and taking in consideration that starting from zero is not so easy, I would recommend this guide for total noobs:

https://darth-coin.github.io/beginner/getting-started-stack-sats-en.html

Alby has changed since you first made this Darth

I know... I am preparing a new guide about Alby.

Looking forward to this!

Nicely written. I’m running two instances of Alby Hub, one on my Umbrel node and one on Alby Cloud, but I want to move the cloud version to my own Apache/Linux web server. Do you think that would be an easy migration?

Yes, just follow the instructions from their github

https://github.com/getAlby/hub?tab=readme-ov-file#self-hosted

If you want to keep the same LN address you have in Alby cloud, you better un-link it first from the cloud and re-link it with your self-hosted hub. Or just start a new standalone account.
