I’ve been told for most of my life that I need to drink more water. But were our ancestors carrying around water bottles all day? How much water do you drink and do you feel better when you force yourself to drink more? Is it more important to eat hydrating foods than to drink water?
Discussion
I think there’s way too much food on the planet. Everybody just need to drink water. It’ll be fine.
nope total psyop.......just use your instincts and also your body makes its own water. Drink it in daylight. Probably the only good habit is first thing is to rehydrate with a full glass of water as you have not consumed any overnight.
I just can’t imagine my ancestors waking up to a glass of water before they go out for their hunt 😂
My problem is that I usually forget to drink water and then have to drinks tons of it after I feel like shit.
Marketing from bottled water companies.
Drink when you feel thirsty, mouth dry or urine darker than usual.
What if my urine is usually dark? Lol
Then it’s probably why the people that have seen your pee told you most your life to drink more water.
No one has ever seen me pee sir
Then you should drink more water
I drink maybe a liter a day. If it’s hot more but I’ve noticed since I went no carb I do not need much water.
I have an 8 oz latte in the morning an hour after I wake up and a 6 ounce americano midday. But I’m not thirsty at all until maybe 1 or 2 o’clock and drink maybe one glass of water.
After dinner I get noticeably thirsty and drink maybe 24 ounces of water. I don’t count but it’s usually a liter or so total.
I find not staying hydrated affects my concentration, gives me headaches, and affects my strength.
Water is pretty important, you only last a day or two without it.
Our ancestors built their villages & camps almost exclusively around good water sources, even though they represented danger due to flooding. We still do to the modern day. Losing that water source through drought or contamination would doom a community.
Going back thousands of years they would make water containers from animal hides, gourds, clay and whatever they could invent to carry water with them, because they didn't know where they would find potable water.
Great points. I feel pretty shitty sometimes if I forget to drink water. Mostly headaches for me but I will feel weaker and more distracted at the gym those days.
Yeah your body is usually pretty good at letting you know. If I have a headache it's usually one of two things. Not enough water, or not enough salt.
“More water” is a fiat answer to a fiat society of high carbs and caffeine. Eating meat only you’d need way less water. Water is also a byproduct of dietary fat metabolism.
I definitely need less water when my carb intake is lower
For me it isn't the water, it's the salt. So easy for me to not get enough salt. That quickly causes cramps no matter how much I drink.
As martial artist I can tell you urine around the color of that cheap ass gas station gallon lemonade or darker has a unmistakable impact on my athletic performance. Thats full concentrate color not diluted in the bowl color.
What is the optimal ratio of water to salt for you?
I just go by taste, most of the time even way over salted food tastes good and not salty to me. I usually supplement with relyte in addition to salted food.
This is what I do with my water but sometimes I get dehydrated because the salty water still tastes good even though it’s too much lol
I had to learn to pay attention to how water tastes too. Sometimes plain water is amazing and that tells me I need more of it. Still not great at this. I often find myself chugging my electrolyte drink or a full liter of water to catch up.
Sports helped build the habit. Especially playing soccer when I was young. You don't get breaks during soccer so you have to pay attention and show up hydrated. BJJ too, an hour pouring sweat with no drink break. People want revenge at BJJ, show up off your game and you will be sure to suffer.
As a kid, the only water I had access to during sports at the park was that sketchy water fountain that probably never had its filter changed. I’d play for hours then go chug tons of water. That seems to be more consistent with what our ancestors did: spend hours hunting until they either caught something to eat or found a water source to replenish themselves.
Lots of our ancestors died of various clogged lungs diseases from sitting in front of a fire so often. The ancestral way isn't always the best way.
I don't know in this case, just saying it isn't a foolproof argument for ideal health.
Interesting I didn't know about the fire being problematic for us
it's never made any sense to me that we can't just trust our thirst. I guess that instinct can be corrupted (as hunger often is by bad food) but the idea that humans absolutely must drink a set amount of water today seems like bs to me.
I probably drink 3 or 4 glasses/day for most of the year. That includes morning tea. Way more in the summer and I'm outside a lot.
Also I find I'm much thirstier when I'm eating carbs than not 🤷♀️
Same experience here with carbs making me thirstier
Depends on the quality of the water. A lot of minerals like magnesium come from water. I get my water from the local well and I only need to drink about half of your typical bottled water to stay hydrated. So find a good quality well with rich mineral(soil) water and that should help.
Growing up in the 80s in AZ we were not TOLD to drink water, we just did... I knew even then that I should drink before I got thirsty. I developed the habit of drinking whenever I am in the kitchen or pass a convenient water source.
I know I do not drink nearly enough and I feel it sometimes. the problem is that once you feel thirsty you are already in the danger zone. I do agree though that the real issue is not enough electrolytes, you can drink pints of water when thirsty and it might not do you much good because your body does not have what it needs to process that water.
It doesn’t help when water sources in the US are full of chemicals and other bullshit like fluoride. They want us retarded and infertile so I have to filter the water and strip away the nutrients. It’s all fucked.
I don’t force myself to drink.
I drink water when I’m thirsty. And i take an extra glas if i notice my pee is yellow 🤷♂️
