My new family doctor is freaking out because because I have high cholesterol and are a "very high risk" of a heart attack.

Before my blood test results came in, he said my blood pressure, heart rate and breathing results were top notch and well above average.

It's kinda funny, sprinting every couple of weeks, being able to run a half marathon in <1:50:00, and working out 6 days/week for the last 25 years, a healthcare professional believes I'm a tickling time bomb.

You can do a coronary calcium scan (I think that’s what it’s called) or tell him GFY. Doesn’t make sense that your blood pressure and heart rate are normal while also being a ticking time bomb for a heart attack. You should ask him that. I’d love to know his answer.

I have an in-person meeting with him on Thursday, I’ll keep everyone updated. We just had a brief discussion on the phone today.

Yeah, I was actually gonna use this as an excuse to get prescribed a coronary calcium scan.

It’s funny, my wife is a nurse and that was the first thing we talked about, how my blood pressure is low, yet I’m supposed to be minutes away from a heart attack lol.

Look into a better cholesterol screen that looks at particle size and not just count like the standard annual bloodwork.

You can also find a way to start monitoring your pulse wave velocity and HRV as ways to monitor heart health in a more early warning way.

It might be too expensive for our Canadian healthcare. I might get prescribed assisted suicide instead.

Maybe, LOL. Here in America it just costs 3 car payments to find out if my heart is a ticking time bomb every year.

Pulse wave velocity and HRV are easily monitored by yourself outside of any doctors office for reasonable amounts of money compared to the cost of a doctors visit in the US or foregone income after an assisted suicide up north.

Waste of time. I personally wouldn’t even do the scan but it’s one way to get your doctor off the subject. Could also be a learning opportunity for the doctor but I doubt it’ll work.

There is a difference between wanting knowledge about your own health and believing every single outdated idea your doctor has.

Every metric I mentioned is a useful measure unlike total counts.

Another example is that I ignore my doctors warnings about my weight but I do track my strength and body fat levels.

I never said they’re not useful metrics. But in his case, it’s likely a waste of time. He’s generally healthy, exercises, and has no other indicators of a health problem.

If I can get him to prescribe the CAC test, I wouldn't have to pay for it. Honestly, I have no issue doing more testing. Last time I did one was 5 years ago. It'd be interesting to have that data and see how it changes over time.

What happens in Canada if you have a serious issue and the doctor won’t prescribe it? You just die?

Drs so prescribe suicide here lol.

Honestly, I'm not sure. The rules are weird here. Preventive tests have to be paid out of pocked.

If I want to get my testosterone levels checked for future reference, I need to pay for it. If I believe I'm trans, they'll take an affirmative care approach, and provide me with hormones.

It's kind of a mess. Some of it depends on your doctor.

I have the same situation: high cholesterol, low blood pressure (except when I’m at the doctor, so I take photos before I see her to prove it), not overweight, don’t smoke or drink.

It was the calcium scan of zero that made her stop recommending statins, which I’ve been refusing to go on for years.

Best wishes! 🫂

That’s the gameplan right now, to ask for a calcium scan. If the test shows issues, I’ll be open to solutions. Unless there’s an issue there, I won’t take any concerns seriously.

This is exactly what I did.

It should be stated that CAC doesnt see non-calcified plaque, but it's still a good test for baseline.

All zeroes!

Most times you should do the opposite of what doctors recommend. Sadly healthcare is often a business designed to keep people sick.

Yeah a doctor once told me not to drink milk so I went to the store and bought a gallon of raw milk. Same guy told me not to eat meat, so I went to the beef initiative and bout 20lbs of beef.

Precisely!! 😎

I learned, especially over COVID, that taking medical advice from anyone who cannot do a pull-up is a bad idea.

Yes!! My doctor knows my stance on things and didn’t dare mention getting vaxxed to me because he knew I would oppose him and give me a lecture lol. He once tried to get me to take a tetanus shot. I said “how about no? What purpose does that serve?” He could only reply “you should be getting one every ten years.” I said “well that won’t be happening.” Did you know there’s studies that link infertility with the tetanus shot?

I did not know that

There’s so much we don’t know! Tetanus shots are often pushed or given if you step on a rusty nail BUT if this is the case and you go to emerge they will give you this shot but it’s supposed to be in your system long before this to be effective.. but does either actually “work” or is there another ploy at play here? I’m skeptical of it all. Stay curious.

No doubt he's trying to get you on statins. Just another big pharma scam. Statins have incredibly nasty side effects, with little to no benefit. But very profitable.

100%

Paul Mason, Eric Westman, Anthony Chaffee, Rob Cywes and Tim Nokes all have many lectures on the cholesterol con (as well as Ken Berry). Lot of good talks by those guys and others on the low carb down under YouTube channel.

If your triglycerides are low you’re likely good. Listen to some of those lectures and you won’t need to worry anymore. Also look into fasting insulin, a1c and if you can find it there is a test that shows damage level to LDL (particulate test I think it’s called) which if it is damaged is indicative of a problem.

It should be much easier / cheaper to get the tests I mentioned than a CAC test.

I’ve listened to a couple of those guys. Yes, my triglycerides are low. A coronary calcium test would be the only left to check.

I’m not sure but I’ve heard that those tests are expensive and hard to get. Probably unnecessary but if you want it and don’t mind the cost or you live in a place that will foot the bill I don’t see why not.

Lot of good evidence (see Minnesota study) that shows higher cholesterol / saturated fat is protective and correlated with longer life span and better health outcomes.

I remember David Diamond talking about this in one of his lectures.

I had a CAC test done 5 years ago for a kickboxing fight. My now retired family physician prescribed it for me, so it didn't cost me a thing (outside of taxes).

How did the kickboxing match go?

It was a Grand Prix tournament in Lethbridge. Had to fight 5 times that day.

Won the tournament with a 5-0 record. 1 win by decision and 4 by knockout (all body).

I was 0-1 MMA and 0-1 boxing at the time. It felt pretty good getting in the win column.

That is awesome. What weight? Did you fight any more after?

I did MMA at 145, kickboxing at 145 and boxing at 136.

That was my last time competing. I did do grappling tournaments after that, but no striking.

Getting hit in the head sucks. It’s fun and a rush but just not worth it.

I was pretty good, but I decided to focus on my business instead. I didn't feel like I could excel at both at the same time.

Head damage is definitely a risk, but we trained very smart at our gym. Injuries as a whole were very low.

A culture of training smart is huge. Respect OG🫡

I remember going to a boxing gym, where sparring was basically full on fighting. I remember for that month, every time I'd park in the back, I'd be going through a mental routine to prepare myself to get into danger. It was not very enjoyable lol.

I'm glad my MMA gym was the opposite. Everyone took care of each other. We trained hard, yet everyone was going home healthy.

Jesus, 5 years ago was 2020? It was 7 years ago then 😂

Blood pressure is normal but risk of cardiac arrest…

Yeah man, plaque is gonna build up and kill me from a heart attack. If you guys don’t hear back from me later this week, my heart probably exploded.

Later this week… 🤣

Not because of a heart attack, but because I’ll be prescribed assisted suicide 😂

The prescription: 😂💀

Did they test ApoB?

Did not. I'll add it to the list.

Trig and HDL?

Normal level

In many of my YouTube videos about cholesterol I link to the research articles I used to make it; email those to your doctor. Especially the study in this video: https://youtu.be/BIg8A_i4hhI

Provide him Ken’s book. “lies my doctor told me” 😂

Wow. I wonder if your doctor can run sub 8.5 minute miles for 13 miles. Lol

I think doctors often get shit on unfairly for stuff like this. Part of the problem is physicians can be held liable if they don’t provide “the standard of care”, which is largely determined by association guidelines (which often have compromised incentives). Even if your heart attack risk is <1% and god forbid you have a heart attack, the doctor is a sitting duck for a malpractice lawsuit for not recommending a statin with elevated cholesterol

There's no disease of cholesterol. If they're saying you're at risk of heart disease or stroke, then have them complete the heart disease picture specific to you. Ask them what other factors complete that picture. Your doctor works for you 🙂

Did you get an advanced lipid panel that includes LDL particle size? get that and dump the research about large, fluffy LDL particles on Doctor Timebomb

That's on the list of things to ask in the next meeting

If your doctor is anything like mine, they won't offer the test. I had to finagle a way to order it myself and go to a lab.

...and my doctor was very unfamiliar with the tests/results

what "test?" what do you ask for?

Haven't been in years and need to get a benchmark

I think it's called vertical auto profile (VAP).

The fact that most doctors don't know that there are multiple particle sizes that behave differently is astonishing to me.

You get it.
