Started deleting apps with overzealous tracking. Let’s stop normalizing big tech voyeurism. This creepy shit needs to stop.

Agreed

That's why I'm privacy fanatic

I’ve been doing general cleanup as well. Amazing how much storage apps take

Can I get a list of apps you deleted

Second the request for a list but sadly I suspect all major mainstream apps are exploitative

Indeed. 🤙🏻

And the list is?

Think I’m finally done with instagram

Nice! 🤗

Very happy for you 🎈 🎉

What’s the #nostr equivalent?

How else would I realize that I need to get a bottle of Pepto-Bismol the next time I verbally say out loud that I have an upset stomach, if it weren’t in my Facebook feed? (True story)

😳

You are lucky to live in a country that has Pepto-Bismol. That's one of the things I miss most from the states.

But back to your point ...... very creepy

Any notable culprits come to mind?

🫂

Is Apple an app? Can I delete my iPhone??? Definitely won't buy another one again.

I recommend the Privacy, Security, & OSINT podcast, as well as books by the host, Michael Bazzell. He has a lot of great techniques to minimize a digital footprint.

That’s, why I’m here…

*opens social media account and mindlessly start scrolling well sitting on the toilet*

NSA/FBI: "He's on the shitter, move in! Move in!"

I feel ya. Logged into my Facebook account yesterday for the first time this year, just so I could make sure all the privacy settings were toggled to maximum restrictions. Then logged back out.

Any suggestions on an easy way to sort/manage apps by “most egregious”?

Nobody should be trusting companies that aren’t transparent and clearly explain to users _before_ they start using an app what information they track and why they need to do so.

Use as many apps through the web browser as possible.

All my social media apps are PWAs.

Agreed.

On that note: I was just kindly (😂) reminded that Apple can of course see all the apps each Apple ID has downloaded.

The dev does not see that though right, unless they explicitly choose to collect user data?

on this topic: best thing if you have an IG, Whatsapp or FB account is to manually revoke your data and opt out of everything before finally deleting said apps as only deleting would still allow companies to control and do as they wish with your data right?

Re: mobile device

Besides having de-googled my phone (as much as reasonably possible) Nad using Fdroid as much as I can, the best helper I've found has been the duckduckgo browser's beta extension tracker blocker. Runs in the background as a VPN, and provides you with an overview of the RIDICULOUS amounts of tracking attempts by whom via which app (so you can decide whether or not it's really worth it having that risk on your device or if you can do without the app...)

Check it out:

And your creepy shitty Android Fans bashing shoul dalso stop

The problem is everyone is on those apps and it is lonely on here.

lots of people are here!

Word. My money is on a few celeb. lurkers….one never knows #nostranonamous… 🤷

you're lonely? hang out with me

You’re on the other side of the earth

sounds like an easy fix

You’re welcome to come and visit me anytime

Research question 🙋‍♂️ if they paid you bitcoin via a lightning invoice for the data they’re currently collecting would you continue to use the apps?

Which apps?

Can the Damus app be blocked or cut off by the government in countries like Iran and China?

I'd appreciate you answering.I'd appreciate you answering.🙏

They have already done it, they blocked the app and also blocked all the bootstrap relays. we added a feature where it would save your current relays set as the bootstrap relays, so you can always get around it.

Tracking people for ads has become so powerful it’s literally instant.

I am 100% certain that Google knows exactly what I buy at my local 7 Eleven.

I bought some random Gum pack ther other day. Drove back home and turned on YouTube. The first ad was the gum I bought.

These people are crazy. This must stop.

Removed all social apps. Only LinkedIn remaining. Hope to delete it soon as well.

For the rest, happy with Nostr content.

Good plan 👍

I need to do this. I have way too many apps on my phone.

Be a boss. Go CLI only on mobile.

I do have a pinephone 🤔

I'm legit thinking about ordering one. Rust Nostr on PinePhone?

It’s more of a linux box in your pocket than a phone. Battery sucks as well.

That has been the issue with every phone I would truly consider a "freedom phone."

When they come out with a piece of killer hardware that can run Ubuntu Touch, I will fully make the switch and do my part to make the software happen.

Librem 5 is also like a linux box in your pocket but the battery may only last a couple of hours. I haven't turned mine on in months. Wasted purchase.

Yep. The hardware is everything. The software can be crowdsourced (and I believe it will be) so easily. Hardware.... that's a sticky wicket.

Man that’s a shame, I had high hopes for Purism’s hardware

Why didn’t you just get a fire ass older Samsung with irblaster and run nethunter on it if you don’t mind me asking? I was actually thinking of doing that the other day , so I was YouTubing how and and actually seen Samsung s 6 edges getting lineage os android 13 on them. Some others installed nerhunter

Been using duck 🦆 go over 7 years

And I can feel the difference between mainstream services that tracks everything and the more privacy oriented options

I can assure you it's worth it

Agree. Most of my apps are just through browser.

I login through Brave Browser and add that web page to Home Screen.

It almost acts like an app with drastically less ads and trackers.

I decided yesterday it was absolutely out of control and I was completely done. I developed a whole community growth system that is private, confuses all the algos instead of giving them good data, and focuses on giving a big percent of value generated by the community back to the community members, proportionate to their engagement, instead of being farmed and value extracted by corporations

Agreed? I don’t even want the tax man looking at my bank account, nevermind some evil mega corp tracking what I’m watching, listening to or even speaking about in my private life

You just started this…?

My feature phone just arrived. When nostr on USSD machankura style?? 👊

How about something like this? https://www.netgate.com

This app changed me. I now reject all cookies. It’s empowering 😀

🤡

wtf does this mean?

Not of ur business 🤡

you're rude

Been doing this for a while, feels more peaceful

My DNS filter catches a good amount of data collection endpoint connection attempts.

It seems like a great chance for a seasonal OS reinstall.

My phone looks so fun nowdays.

Damus, Insta, Twitter, Nexo, Wallet of Satoshi, Brave, Coinmarket cap, Splice, Ledger.

Mics, notfications, tracking, everything off, even brave block all cookies which I change if I really need to visit site that usea cookies for verification, logging off from insta etc.

Is good, let’s not give shit to these old farts.

#nostr

This is the way

What is an easy way to uncover what an ios app is tracking?

NextDNS

Amazing job Will! Thank you for improving the Nostr 😍🌷

we need to work our way through legislation to fix this.

US laws generally do not encompass the right to privacy - whilst US legislation addresses data security and the importance of private records, privacy is often absent from the discussion, appearing in separate privacy laws.

We can look to the EU for help, GDPR is geared towards a person's RIGHT TO PRIVACY.
