I’ll admit it. I’ve complained about Cashu without ever really using it. Testing and random transactions do not count. So this month, I’m going nuts:

⚡ Using Cashu wallets for zaps and everyday Nostr transactions.

⚡ Treating eCash not as a novelty, but as real Bitcoin on Lightning. Fight me on this!

If we’re serious about freedom tech, we’ve got to use it and not just talk about it.

So for the entire month of November, I’ll be using #Cashu instead of my usual Lightning wallets and I’m inviting you to join me. Let’s see what it’s really like to live on eCash for a month. 🥜💸

Here’s how you can join in:

👉 Option 1: Use cashu.me as your eCash wallet.

It uses npub.cash automatically as your Lightning address.

For zapping, connect your NWC wallets.

Be sure to log in with your browser extension so you use your real npub (otherwise it’ll generate a random one).

Use it for both sending zaps with NWC

you don't need to do anything. i want to use it so that i can better understand and recommend it to users. i want to help facilitate privacy. i want to help advance freedom technology. this is a public experiment for me and anyone that wants to join.

what do you mean? I use Wallet of Satoshi and it's easy. I haven't had any issues with it. Why don't you help improve lightning instead of trying to make a new a Bitcoin.

That reminds me when someone said Bitcoin is too slow and forked it to Bitcoin cash.

i've ran a lightning node for 5 years and i've never had an issue or major problem. i think lightning is easy.

i also have on-boarded thousands of users that are not technical like me. i've on-boarded people in various locations around the world.

my uses cases and comfort levels are not the same as the other 8 billion people on the planet. if that were the case, we'd have 8 billion nostr users and 8 billion bitcoiners.

we need solutions that work for humanity, not just a few technical people or early adopters.

and because of my real world use cases, i know that on-boarding to lightning is a huge cluster fuck.

that's because it's still early, and the fiat system is still dominant and has some of the most intelligent people working on the fiat system.

Bitcoin was the same in the early days, no exchanges, no Bitcoin credit cards etc.

at the beginning, everyone was saying Bitcoin is too slow and it's too difficult to get the normies to join, It takes times to improve a technology, exactly like cars & Facebook, those 2 couldn't handle the world but over time, more people joined the movement to improve cara and Facebook and now the world uses them.

Bitcoin, lightning and nostr is the same. Its being improved everyday and eventually it will be much easier for the normies and the world will join.

Don't lose hope. Bitcoin & nostr is the future. Nothing else.

But it's good you are researching other things so maybe you can take that knowledge and bring it back into Bitcoin and nostr. I might try to check out this cashu stuff too, or wait for your thesis on what you investigated.

Nostr natives and nuts go hand in hand

Cashu offers new users an easy way to immediately receive zaps. They can stack until they have enough to open a channel. Load up the channel and take self custody by closing on chain. Nostr native cashu users move down layers not up.

Lightning I agree with you too. It all started simple with nostr:npub1getal6ykt05fsz5nqu4uld09nfj3y3qxmv8crys4aeut53unfvlqr80nfm just a plugin for your browser now its for me to much options (understand regularly pressure to change) but again became to much tech. As a content creator you get lost.

Those who really care about normies and growing nostr then are going to be for USDT zaps.

It's insanely hard for the average person to acquire "a little Bitcoin" in any form, be it lightning form or Cashu form (if you call Cashu a form). Strike doesn't even have debit card support anymore for goodness sakes. People just can't get the stuff, and no, begging nostr old-timers for a few handout sats is not a solution.

The best path for growing nostr is USDT, because normies can actually GET A HOLD OF IT. Nostr doesn't run on Bitcoin like Farcaster runs on ETH , at best Bitcoin is just a plug-in, and USDT is a more useful one.

Are you referring to having your own lightning node opening channels and balancing liquidity? Would cashu be easier to use? I’ve recently run my own node and created a lightning node but I’ve not opened any channels yet as I’m still a bit unsure how to fully use it. Do you need your own lighting node to use cashu?

Here is why I think it's useful. It's not meant to be used for everything, but it has certain strong points.

Lighting has many issues when used self custodial. That's why most end up using a custodial wallet.

you don't need to do anything. cashu is a way to use custodial lightning more privately.

for example, you're a user of wallet of satoshi. cashu has better privacy and a many other features enabled through its cryptography.

As a cashu user from its inception I am happy to be a reaource sir.

We went from dming token strings to npubs, zapping using nwc, nut integration into amethyst, embedded nuts in emoji, hidden nuts in memes, and now using nuts as authentication api strings for pay per use services like routstr to provide anon ai access for devs using shakespeare in a private to route around google play kyc!

Reason being is becuase they're basing the send-to lock of tokens to the receiver's npub, where only they can unlock the token.

What's missing from them to make it 'perfect' is if they make it so that it utilizes nutzaps (so that the receiver knows they've received ecash without the sender needing to manually send them the token).

I've been using Cashu in nostr:npub1xnf02f60r9v0e5kty33a404dm79zr7z2eepyrk5gsq3m7pwvsz2sazlpr5 for receiving zaps since the feature came out and the only issue I had was I had to switch mints once.

Plus you can do things like this...

People get confused about cashu because they haven’t updated their thinking. Cashu is a protocol. It overtly isn’t bitcoin, therefore that argument doesn’t hold weight.

You can issue any kind of asset on cashu. I have used cashu in dollars. We are using the cashu protocol to issue bitcoin. It is the best most private alternative to custodial lightning. Perfect privacy, can’t be individually rugged or censored and you hold the bearer iou on device.

It isn’t self custodial bitcoin. Nothing is. And calle has been clear about that from the start.

you don't have to take part of this experiement if you don't want to. im doing it for my reasons and you can also not do it for your reasons.

No. KYC is to the person not the utxos. There is no kyc on bitcoin. It simply links you to a utxo. Sending the utxo to cashu or even to whirlpool doesn’t get rid of kyc. It obfuscates the spending of a utxo. If foe any reason an authority wants to force you to prove you still haven’t sold your bitcoin without properly paying capital gains on it then you would be facing that issue. There is an important distinction. The transaction can be hidden but the legal obligations of kyc in the future aren’t removed. The kyc is at the custodian not the blockchain.

It’s definitely different. And as a dev of Cashu tokens I would expect you to know the difference. (I know you do)Yes, both have tradeoffs but one is still bitcoin and the other is a casio token purchased for bitcoin. Fine I changed my address. I never kept more than like 500 sats in there anyway.

I gotten rugged for more Cashu tokens than I ever lost sats in CoinOS. I’ve lost zero sats from using CoinOS. I can’t say that for Cashu. Lost several thousand from double spends.

FWIW, I've been using the nPub.cash/cashu.me combo for quite a while, and they're awesome!

But, I recently started test-driving minibits - newly available on iOS app store - and it's even smoother.

My 2 sats: especially if you're considering using the minibits mint, you may as well also just use the minibits app - the fewer potential sources of failure, the better.
