If you are using today's version of nostr:nprofile1qqs24yz8xftq8kkdf7q5yzf4v7tn2ek78v0zp2y427mj3sa7f34ggjcpzamhxue69uhhv6t5daezumn0wd68yvfwvdhk6tcppemhxue69uhkummn9ekx7mp0qyg8wumn8ghj7mn0wd68ytnddakj703s8dt go to the Around Me feed and say hello to your neighbors (+/- 5km, 3 mi). We are going to be using local feeds to onboard new users in the future.

Im finna stalk ERRBODY

Chill bro stop doxxing your self hahahah

aw so lonely no one near me in YYC

😇

cool feature Vitor

Somebody has to start :)

Where is YYC?

Calgary (airport YYC)

Is there a new fdroid repo? I'm still on 0.91.0 with no update to install

Fdroid is blocking it. Something to do with the Tor library we added. You should move to nostr:nprofile1qqs83nn04fezvsu89p8xg7axjwye2u67errat3dx2um725fs7qnrqlgzqtdq0 or Obtainium.

Zapstore got a lot of upgrades since i last tried it too!

This worked great

I don't get it. Will only notes marked with the geotag show up in the around me feed? I've never marked any of my notes with the geo-location tag. Does that mean no one will see any of my notes on their around me feed?

I checked mine local city and it was empty. I changed my location to your city in the USA using a fake gps app and I looked at the feed and see some of your posts but not all of them. I see a couple other posts from other users but not much.

Yep, posts will only show if they mark the location you are in. Those location-exclusive posts will not show in any other feed.

This is the new NIP-22. So, there is literally no posts anywhere yet.

A suggestion. You could ask a diversity of nostriches around the glob to send some events with this tag in order to test and have something to show up.

Hm. In my app it shows one post (that is absolutely nearby) but its from Sept 2022.

loading location ...

Did the location permission request popup up?

Which Android are you running?

yes, and it's allowed. Graphene ...

It didn't pop up for me

Can i get a 300mi/500km radius? geocode?

Not yet, def in the future.

5km is too close nobody here 😭

Maybe 50km would be ideal 🤷🏻‍♂️

I'm gonna be pretty surprised if there is anyone near me tbh

There's nobody near me, just checked🧐.

If anyone is near it would probably be someone who keeps their location secret because most people are at least a tiny bit paranoid

True!

Yeah my wife and I updated, enabled location, made a location specific post right next to each other, posted to the same realys, still couldnt see it...

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Very cool feature, great to start local economies

With all this cool stuff you are doing, we need amethyst web for desktop. Any plans? You are one of the few nostr app devs that really understands how to make something good and actually bears fruit.

The issue is that every time a dev goes multiplatform we lose a good app and get two mediocre apps.

Plans to optimize for tablet?

keep up the good work, ser 🫡

I agree (not that it matters 😁)... YEAH...sticking with Android-only is a good idea.

I endup with waydroid. Not ideal, but better then nothing.

Get a Chromebook. Pretty sure you can run Android apps on it. I'm ditching Windows soon I think.

Why not linux? I use Gentoo

Waydroid

Chrome OS is Linux. Just usable and well-adopted.

Cant get all the same software?

As Android? I think. Because it runs Play Store. The largest collection of apps in the world. With option for direct APK sideloads. (F-Droid, Direct APK, etc). Way easier to build on too.

If you are considering adding more location services in addition to the feed in the future, maybe add a toggle under privacy to enable and disable location services (enabling would remove the Around You feed and any other items as options).

I know Android prompts you to enable locations, but this would be an extra line of defense for those worried about accidentally leaving location on or something like that. Just my 2 unsolicited cents to keep privacy.

Unable to zap

Is this enabled by g tag?

And nip 22

GrapheneOS (up to date)

with or without GooglePlay services enabled, I see a spinning circle waiting for the location. I see the notification that the location is being accessed but I never see results and it doesn't say where I am.

on the other hand OSS Weather knows my address with GPS.

Humm.. I wonder how graphene deals with this .. maybe they don't even offer coarse location 🤔

does Amethyst display the location after the search finishes or before in terms of flow in the app? could it be just not showing the location because it has no results? idk your code.

I tried it with and without fine location on.

any web apps support this?

Would you please aska few questions?

Does amethyst save location data now?

Does it work by phone location? Should phone location be on?

What happens with VPN on?

The app itself doesn't save location data anywhere. It just posts to event when you mark that option.

The use of a VPN/Tor doesn't change it. The location comes from on Android's coarse location services which use cell tower triangulation to know roughly where you are.

But there are GPS apps that can intercept and force another location.

So you save our lat/long to relays, permanently, publicly, so anyone can pull it from event data?

Not late long, but a geohash that has a +/-5km uncertainty.

But you're pulling coarse location? Not GPS? It's showing 100m accuracy here.

Has something changed with this location method, or are you running some sort of scrambler for posting?

Yeah, we get the lat, long from the 100m precision and cut it forward to make it a 5km geohash with 5 chars. You can play with it here https://www.movable-type.co.uk/scripts/geohash.html

Ok thanks for explanation. Looked into geohash. Seems like a useful obfuscation method.

predictably nobody around me 😂😂

we are still early

In the latest version I don't see automatic translation of notes anymore. I downloaded the Google play version from GitHub.

cool idea!

Doesn't seem to load is this because I'm on tor? Is there a way to manually enter location? That would be a ideal for me. https://nostrcheck.me/media/9e69e420e60df69cd945510882cfe44d91757a2c58d1c21c027a7977d12360c2/28f48169562caaea32e387a0cbf20df641a0123bd9fd2a28d68b2ec70d083d6b.webp

Hum .. it should still load. Are you on graphene by any chance?

Yes.

I would love an option to manually set.

If I take a short vacation I'm likely to still make posts relevant to my home area. Also would rather select the nearest large city to my town. This would increase my chances at finding locally relevant content. And it would allow people with stalking concerns to still participate.

Interesting 🤔

Only one post from near me, it was a guy comparing trump to Hitler.

How lovely.

Can you manually select location?

Not yet

Not pulling a location for me. Pixel 8 pro, stock, I have it location permissions.

Did it ask you for permissions to see location at all? Are you on Android 15?

Yes, and I allowed it. I'm on Android 15 yes.

Humm... Very interesting. Can you flip to All Follows and back?

When I do that it shows the spinning circle. Android settings shows that Amethyst accessed my location.

Hah.. that nails it down. I will do some tests tomorrow.

Mine also isn't working. If I select "Around Me", I just get neverending spinning wheel and no location data. Same goes for if I try to include location in a note. Just the spinning wheel. I double-checked that I granted Amethyst location permissions.

Are you on Android 15 as well?

No, I'm on Android 12

I wonder if sometimes Android is not able to give a location back. We are not asking for fine location, so the GPS is not used. Maybe that is the issue.

I have the same issue on my other device, which is Android 14. Just a spinning wheel.

Do both have data plans?

Only the Android 14 has data. The 12 just has wifi.

I'll also add that it doesn't appear that Amethyst is making any attempt to acquire location because I never see the Android notification icon indicating that location is being accessed.

This is awesome!

iOS anytime soon?

Can't wait to get this update! Gonna be 🔥

Waiting for fdroid!

FDroid is blocking the update since we added Tor. Just loose Obtainium or nostr:nprofile1qqs83nn04fezvsu89p8xg7axjwye2u67errat3dx2um725fs7qnrqlgzqtdq0

Awww... Will look into options for grapheneOS

why does Tor matter to fdroid?

#Zapstore #future #Nostr

Looks like it breaks reproducibility of the build. I am still investigating how to fix this, if there is a way.

How can I expand the radius? 3 miles is pretty small.

We will add some options in the future.
