I still can't really explain why 99% of nostr is so nice when it's the only place you can't get banned or censored?
Like why did we not instantly become 4chan?

fuck you retard
NGMI
4chan people don't know much about nostr yet most likely
Because most of us are Bitcoiners and people that are into Bitcoin want a better future for everyone.
No advertisers to please
no corporate masters
There is CP and gore getting posted but most is honestly filtered away it seems maybe we’re not popular enough yet..
1. firehose
2. GM / GN
Gm
🤣 🤣 #2 was about manners a little.. The ritualistic GM/GN spread around and nearly the top people always trying to keep a positive tone, vibe, Pura Vida, etc
Seems to have had an impact away from the firehose.
What happened to the GM bot? Did he get tuckered out saying good morning too much?
Nostr is still a very niche solution. These problems are very likely to come, and I hope that Nostr will be able to address them, for example by selecting specific relays or other mechanisms.
I reckon it's very niche as it's so hard to navigate, now weeks later and I'm still trying to make head or tail of how to use it.
The suck hasn't gotten here yet. With more adoption comes more dreck but hopefully the relays are able to deal with the bulk of it. First adopters always have more in common than not.
So far it’s not geared towards that.
It’s primarily been promoted in Bitcoin Twitter circles only.
But I’m sure once word gets out to the general public it will evolve into more trolling.
I think places like 4Chan, gab, and Twitter already satisfy most of that.
But I’m in sure in due time as this place becomes more progressive the natural predators will move in to hunt on their prey.
Because fuck you, that’s why. (Doesn’t fit like I hoped)
The banning and censorship makes people mean. It's because you empower them to oppress each other via reporting and entice them to conform to an algorithm, viewing other users as merely eyes to view their content.
When you take that away, and when you only have control over your own sphere of signed notes, you actually just have fewer avenues to be mean. And the only ones who will be mean are the ones who are actually just assholes.
great questions -- at this point of nostr, it's hard to game actual freedom
Because you won't get zapped if you act like a jerk.
good question
Because 4chan, x, reddit and many big tech sites are all fake and run by propaganda bot farms. The majority of people are actually quite nice and looking to debate and not fight.
All the big tech sites and the bot farms are financed by the same type of money that funds USAID.
I suspect these bots farms will soon fall and all those big tech sites will fall too and it will be exposed. Everything is done to make people believe the left is a big majority but it's all fake.
Maybe because we can barely see what other people post , most of it goes into the void 😅 , there is a few people on here that I follow , I only see their posts using one client and not the other .
apps and relays are literally censoring users with a social credit score
Do you have the same relay set on both clients?
I do
Which clients are you using?
Subscribed to Damus and primal + nostur , and Snort for web
Ah I imagine you’re seeing different stuff on Primal?
Yess , which one are you using ?
Damus is the main one. I use Nostur a bit. Nostrudel.ninja as a web app. I also have Primal but I don’t use it much these days
You’re seeing different things on Primal because of the way it fetches notes. Instead of fetching them from your relays it gets them from their caching relay.
Nostur has a beta feature in the settings where it removes notes you’ve already seen. If you turn it off (or have it off already), Damus and Nostur feeds are similar.
I think it is because of self-censorship. By that, I mean that the people who cannot tolerate bitcoin discussion have censored themselves by not being on nostr. That leaves only people who can tolerate bitcoin discussion, which by its very nature requires a high degree of tolerance.
There is no algorithm to identify and surface content that enrages you. It lowers the temperature and discourages people who monetize rage from participating.
Because there are social consequences even if there's no censorship. If you're a POS, you're going to muted until it's just you screaming into the void. The community self-selects for general respect, and reciprocal altrusim, with muted users essentially being shunned for violating the implied community standards.
Let me quickly put on my tinfoil hat ...
nostr:npub180cvv07tjdrrgpa0j7j7tmnyl2yr6yr7l8j4s3evf6u64th6gkwsyjh6w6 and all the others are actually USAID paid terrorists that try to get Bitcoin Twitter out of Twitter so they only preach to the choir. So now here we are, preaching to the choir. Why else would they constantly tell you to delete your Twitter account?
Me thinks nostr is just two awesome to be part of the problem
I would actually want my nostr client to surface controversial hot takes and put one of these at the top of my feed. What was the most controversial thing any of my follows follows said in the past 24h? Show me so I can join the fight! But let me control how much of this and within which limits I will get to see.
agreed ✔️
I feel like the difference between anonymity vs being pseudo -anonymous (with verified public/private key)... Your reputation means something here
Incentives.
We are all in basic consensus on a few rules.
Freedom money attracts people who are hopeful
4chan used to be like this. Normies ruin everything. This place will be no different, given enough time.
Another puzzling thing is that trusted pubkey numbers aren’t going up or down, at least for the six months that nostr.band stats go back. Quite flat. Suggests people aren’t leaving out of disinterest, nor are people joining out of curiosity. (Or that the exact number of those leaving out of disinterest are being replaced by those joining out of curiosity.) No doubt a temporary equilibrium, but still I'd have thought that something of this nature would either be clearly adding or clearly dropping users over six month blocks.
This place was absolutely full of 4chan simps when I first arrived. Apparently mute buttons work
The mute button is the most important tool for new users. Because in the beginning, they're going to be bombarded by the full firehose. It's really important to mute everyone you don't want to hear from in the first two weeks. Then, as you follow new people, your feed will become better and better as assholes are weeded out, and people you want to hear from are added.
Thanks for understanding where I’m coming from. Appreciate it.

Having an identity tied to an npub probably makes a difference. There's an effort barrier to entry.
Yes, people want to be nice as real people
most people just want to say hi to their friends without alot of
drama.
I never thought about this but it is a very good point. I have been off most social media for probably 10 or so years (I kept Instagram up until probably 3- 5 years ago to post and see pictures) but you're right almost everything here seems overwhelmingly friendly and caring wich is totally the opposite of what I remember/have seen lately from twitter etc. screenshots. I guess that's why I am still here........... That and it's nice to see people that are capable of thinking outside the popular narrative it makes me feel like part of a group or tribe again (wich I haven't outside of my immediate family since covid bullshit..... I guess I am saying I love you NOSTRNAUTS. Thank you
Cause its not filled with only north americans
общий язык общения)))
no bots yets.
I think one of the main reasons is that if you're an asshole you don't get zaps.
When exploring, I saw things I shouldn’t ever see. Hard to say if it was just 1%
🫂🧡
Because we all buy into the narrative that we see every day on the news…people = bad. Reality is just a bit more nuanced. nostr is more like is our natural default state when we form communities.
If you get chance read Humankind by Rutger Bregman. He gives some compelling arguments for this case.
Mostly the normies haven't joined NOSTR yet. Maybe they never will, preferring to duke it out on FB etc forever. Fingers crossed
Just browse the global feeds. It is getting nasty there. 🥺
BECAUSE WE WANT TO GET ZAPPED
😄

No algo to promote rage engagement posts.
In my feed I don't see political views or problems of the 🌎, I mostly see people celebrating progress and others, thus I feel to share the same vibes 🧡🌽
This is stupid. There you happy now?
People are here to build something, not to destroy something.
GM and GFY ❤️
Zaps brings balance
What does "4chan" imply for you?
we are too old
The lack of an algo designed to push / reward this kind of negative behavior is definitely a big factor imo.
The way a network is informed tends to guide its direction. Nostr folks were interested in Bitcoin and the matured values or associations that having a focus on Bitcoin bring.
Every reply is your permanent reputation. Starting anew is proof of work.
Too many softcock nerds on NOSTR
Because all the current users are Bitcoin'ers and Bitcoin adjacent and we all want this community to work well.
I'm much more obnoxious on X.
Which is why I'm taking a break.
Decentralization, baby. Harder to control a swarm of bees than a hive. For now.
2 things spring to mind. 1 it's small, smaller groups are less volatile. 2 lack of algorithm deliberately causing shit between people.
I like it here.
This is the way Usenet and FidoNet were before Eternal September. Enjoy it while it lasts.
quality over quantity. at least for now.
4chan didn’t have zaps to inform their users what’s important
You mean my parents were right, and you get more with honey than with vinegar? 🤔🤣 🫂🙏
Very hard to delete things here.
That’s what freedom can do to people 🙂
Because the retarded trolls haven't arrived yet. They'll come with the normies (assuming they ever come over).
I think this might be a strong factor. The lot here is not easily trollable (a friend told me)
I've only just arrived and found it quite difficult, found it a big learning curve.
My 3 sats
1. Nostr is still relatively small. I read last week there's like 20K active accounts. That's not much and there is still no critical mass at this point so bad actors have little to gain in coming here and messing things up
2. It's still quite homogeneous with Bitcoin being topic number one and then various pro-freedom dabbling. This might be working as a deterrent for troublemakers (Bluesky and/or Mastodon might be targets with lower entry barrier)
Well I guess that were my 2 sats 😅
because people aren't as bad as Elon says and because there are less bots on nostr
Because we are assholes and have hope for a better world thanks to Bitcoin and nostr!!
I have make my commitment to start using it, almost two years as a bystander, joined but never went all in. Now I am using it.
But, it is very hard still to get the level of almost real time info you can get on, lets say, X.
For the most part that speed of info is useless and the truthiness of it is not anywhere near to be trustworthy. But in situations like per-censorship, like Venezuela riots, Tornado hits near me while in season, Panama canal news that affect me as Panamanian in the US, etc etc, it does give more recent events and allow me to stay informed...We just need more people to get that effect here on nostr, but looks like we will get there.
For now, I think being active here, and just check news there is my best option.
This are the only real reason why I have kept my account, but fantasy all day long if I should just get rid of them all (other legacy social media). I assume it will be pretty similar for others.
There is no reason I can see why nostr can win, it should.
because people tend to be extremists only when there is a force constricting them into subduing to rules.
I believe that once enforcers of the rules of society disappear, people will start behave properly even without police threatening your life into compliance.
It’s because we’re still so early and the fact there is no algorithm that thrives on rage bait
Just w8 for the masses
I hitchhiked extensively when young and (mostly) everyone was wonderful in their own ways. One exception.
shut up! you want to fight????
at least for now, you see tons of hope/optimism on nostr
while 4chan saw tons of despair
i think they’re might be an increasingly more societal redefining of censorship resistance as individual freedom enabling rather than only something for decadence and there is a hopeful virtuous loop forming across nostr’s network effects
Purpose. This is probably one of the highest concentrations of purpose driven people who see the big picture and have awoken to the Matrix, that exists anywhere online. A digital Zion, so to speak.
I have seen a ton of shit here that would be right at home on 4chan, so presumably it's who you're following + not looking for topics that bring out the bigots. Also presumably not doing many global searches, since I've seen literal porn by doing that.
Where on Nostr can we get the 4chan vibe?
