Unless people are more discerning in who they follow WoT will be useless, and Nostr will be overrun with bots and scams. I see lots of authentic new users with little to no follows and no engagement, while crap like this is followed by accounts with big influence who have been here for a long time.

It's frustrating to see obviously authentic new users getting no followers or engagement, while established, influential accounts give credence to scammy shit like this. It's not hard to look at an account before you follow it SMH.

In their defense, maybe they followed after some interactions and not after the cringe 4 cringe. But totally agree with you. Scrolled the profile, saw that and never followed 😮‍💨

It just amazed me how many there were following it. If it's this easy to get traction with zap4follow and some LLM text #darknostr will be true before too long.

It should be based on a trusted npubs list, not follows.

It probably still ends up with the same issue, but maybe it makes it less likely? Make more friction to become a trusted npubs. A follow is a single click, and means nothing. Theoretically marking someone as trusted wouldn't be done for someone you just encountered. My trusted list would be reserved for people I know IRL and for people I've had longer interaction with.

Hashtag spam happens often. If you are using Amethyst there is an option to report content, which can help other users avoid those posts.

Not everything automated is spammy or scammy. Intent, transparency and delivery are important.

Anyone can add a "bot:true" tag to their profile, as well. I also build bots, for release notes and testing and stuff, but they're going to be labeled and our clients will display that label in the npub profiles.

Labels for bots is a great idea.

This is to avoid confusion. It's not a label applied to others. The creator of a bot can label it as such themselves for clarity, so people know what they are interacting with.

I created this original thread to warn people of possible scammy behavior. I feel it was justified, and the user it was about has already committed to changing that behavior, and we have had real conversations. I think it's a win overall 🤙

Zap for follow is just as cringe as crying for zaps on memes imo. But there isn’t anything malicious with either. One is making memes for sats and the other is offering sats for follows. If he’s going to pay sats for follows then I guess that’s fine. It’s like paying for ads to get people to follow your instagram. It’s not great quality follows but it’s not malicious. And I think using LLMs to communicate is inauthentic. It’s low quality content but is it scammy? I wouldn’t say that but I would agree that Ryan’s advice to not use those tactics is solid. Eventually people would’ve unfollowed if it really bothered them. There was an npub I had to unfollow recently because all the posts were just asking for sats to feed their kids. I don’t think that’s scammy but it’s just annoying.

my most charitable reading is that the account in question is not a native English speaker, probably over-uses LLMs and emojis, and might have engaged in some questionable practices in the past but is not a "scammer".

That's why I have tried to help this user in the past. I've mentioned to them numerous times why zap4follow is bad for Nostr, and advised them on ways to grow their account more naturally.

WoT shouldn't work on follows, anyway. I should be able to follow someone in order to see their notes, whether I trust them deeply or hate and distrust them entirely. it just means I want to see their notes. we need better ways to represent reputation and trust that aren't follow-related (ahem, grape rank, cough cough nostr:npub1u5njm6g5h5cpw4wy8xugu62e5s7f6fnysv0sj0z3a8rengt2zqhsxrldq3)

I'm in 💯 agreement on that. A follow means nothing, just that a button has been clicked one time. Hopefully we see more of a move toward multiple lists, and using something else for trust. I wish I had a "trusted users" list, that I could add people I have met IRL, and users whom I've had extensive interactions with to. Follows don't really mean much.

I’m glad to hear that! What types of attestations? The more high quality trust signals become available, the easier it will be to supplant follows as a source of trust signal.

Augment may be a better word than supplant. The more data sources we have, the better.

We first just did badges, but that's really easy to game and some people troll others with rude badges or wait until people add badges to their profile and then turn the images into porn. Very funny.

Then we thought a handshake method would be good, so that someone can give someone else part of their WoT, if they know them IRL.

And there are also ways to gamify the handshake at meetups, by using techniques that requiring seeing the same thing or connecting over Bluetooth, or whatnot.

Worth it to note that I’ve come across great accounts here mainly from latin america that use LLMs and I later realized that it’s to overcome language barriers and convey their ideas. They’re making an effort to communicate in our language, and that deserves respect. Let’s not throw them all in the same basket 🫂

It's a pattern of that, plus the zap4follow tactic. It's a Nostr dark pattern, which shouldn't be encouraged. It's a textbook way for a user to get into WoT networks and then be able to introduce bots. New users need to know that zap4follow let's possible bots and scammers into their Nostr feed 🤙
