Iâm gonna be on stage at the conference sort of representing nostr users.
I have my own thoughts, but as an average nostr user whatâs important to you about nostr?
What do you get out of being here?
What keeps you coming back?

Saying GM to the plebs. Avoiding clown world. Owning my keys and network.
Everyone complains about big tech censorship.
Nostr empowers you to do something about it rather than complaining on the platforms they own.
-
"Be the change you want to see in the world"
That I donât empower Musk and the advertisers. That I donât experience the manipulation by the algorithms.
The "other stuff" is the bread and butter. Way more than just social media. Own your public identity with any app you interface with.
Knowing that I canât be censored is a big one.
Not contributing to the bottom line of big tech pocketbook
No algorithm trying to influence us
More organic content and conversations
Nostr is revolutionary tech and want to be here to help it grow
This keeps me coming back
Not being mind controlled by an algorithm mainly
Ditto. This is the big thing for me.
1 /âžď¸
It is an unprecedented and beautiful thing, that one can know nothing about being a Dev or creating a protocol and be able to observe and participate in the (R)evolution.
There are no stupid questions- or if they are - no matter
Onward!
đ¤
â¨đâ¨
I love the cross culture conversation whether from people around the globe or others with different views. It's a giant organic melting pot by the people for the people.
Constructive community
Interacting with friends, saying gm, shitposting, no ads, owning my identity, seeing the technology evolve day by day
Community feels close-knit. Like there's a real chance you'll actually read this
Feels like my posts matter more
And that im contributing the sovereign freedom tech dream
Absolutely
First things that come to mind:
- current quality of content is superior than other platforms. Pure signal.
- no algorithms to shape the conversations.
- decentralized > centralized
- no friction to send sats P2P.
đ¤
These bullets are on point.
Nothing having to give away personal information to engage with other
Signal
Better tech
Not having to thought police your own mind.
Ummm iâm banned everywhere else
No rage bait -> calmer state of mind -> clearer thoughts
Firm ground upon which I can build.
The Truth.
And Frens.
Freedom to post as I please.
No deletion of accounts.
Able to stack sats and with-drawl funds whenever I choose.
The community.
Itâs a fabric for apps of the future. Donât describe it as a social media or alternative to Twitter, itâs much more. It has value for value built in.
We donât need no education. We donât need no mind control.
I've got a vin diagram for you...
I see it đŻ
I was responding to your "We donât need no education. We donât need no mind control." I didn't realize it was part of a thread... so this is why I love NOSTR because I'm already mismanaged and I can further amplify this mismanagement by using multiple protocol apps that do strange and exciting things.
Itâs people being people, with no manipulative algorithms or third parties trying to control what we see or say. My feed is just the people I follow and since itâs chronological I mostly see whatever is currently being discussed, instead of being dragged back into issues/topics that some algorithm decides I should see. It feels like a network of humans existing in the moment sharing whatâs important to each of us. Zaps are pretty fâing cool too. đ
BITCOIN : USD :: NOSTR : X
I control my keys. Not the government, not Elon, not a trusted third party.
The direct interactions and responses. Beeing able to zap and getting zapped is a very different experience to only likes.
Generally a welcoming community
* can reliably talk with someone & get a feeling of their character & make a connection because it's not an empty performance for an algorithm
* owning identity & data
* permissionless
* censorship resistant
* totally weird
* also kinda normal
* high energy
* much less toxicity & clickbait
* good for mental & social health
* growing art scene
* fun tech pushing the boundaries
* good mornings
I have to zap my goddess & domina #findom
memes bring me here..
NOSTR = Unbannable
YMMV
- Natively integrated permissionless payments / innovation for the creator economy
- Interoperability
- Social media that doesnât punish you for stepping away for any amount of time - social media thatâs âboringâ more like real life
- Vector for seamless, social bitcoin onboarding at the higher layers
- Longer term excitement about Nostrâs âWeChat momentâ - originally WeChat started out as WhatâsApp clone, grew by cloning IG, FB, and Yelp functionality - but now launches its own innovative feature that western apps are keen to copy. Right now Nostr is still largely in the Twitter / Meduim clone phase but there is clearly innovation happening to reimagine what can be, unburdened by what has been in social media. Nostr may not have the scale for these new concepts to fully catch on just yet be it will happen.
NO ADS
The incentives arenât broken, and it makes the protocol actually usable.
Users, developers, clients, all of us - we arenât incentivized (by ads, engagement, revenue) to post or amplify the trash content that makes people angry and scared and divided on every social media platform.
The incentives on nostr are zaps and bloom-vibes for posting quality content. Itâs pretty simple.
And all of this social content gives nostr the momentum to bootstrap the Other Stuff, so itâs the case that 1) the present experience is dramatically better than any alternative, and 2) the future is extremely bright, fascinating, wide-open, and full of potential.
Honestly, I just feel good knowing that some dick sack can't nuke me from digital existence simply because I don't meet some arbitrary standard. In a word: Freedom.
What we love :
Freedom for us
Freedom for others
Freedom of ideas
Ownership over content
What we need (not just for Nostr) : Better key management tools.
No algorithms, no ads. You can truly be yourself and get zapped for your content! Seeing new people join and learning about Bitcoin!
Rewarding to post with less risk of scammers. Message is sent clearly with no noise. Posts last and can be found by others. Feel heard
Freedom
Meaningful Connection
Endless Optimistic Other Stuff
Endless Possibility
This is a message I wrote to a friend that owns a social media agency, feel free to plagiarise as you wish:
NOSTR stands for Notes and Other Stuff Transmitted on Relays and it is a social media protocol in the same way http is a web protocol.
The protocol is open and anybody can build upon it. It has some fundamental concepts that are very different to existing social media platforms.
Firstly it is decentralised, it runs across relays and anybody can run a relay. They can be open or closed, public or private, free or paid.
Secondly, as a user, you donât have an account, you have a private key, this is used to secure your data. These are the same type of keys used to secure Bitcoin.
Your profile (account) is yours, you own and control it using your private keys and verified by others with your public key.
Your posts are yours and you can store them on your own relay in your own home or business or you can rely on free public relays or more feature rich paid public relays.
All your public data is signed by your private keys to verify it is you that owns it and all your private data is encrypted so nobody can read it.
Messages (i.e. think NOSTR WhatsApp) are encrypted with your private keys so NOBODY can hack it or listen in, not even the NSA through a companies backdoor. You message other users privately by encrypting messages to them using their public key, which they decrypt using their private key.
Relays talk to each other in the same way Bitcoin nodes relay information using the Byzantine generals solution so brilliantly solved by Satoshi Nakamoto for Bitcoin. Think of it a bit like BitTorrent.
Data is normally sent on the clearnet, but can be relayed across the darknet (Tor) in highly censored regions.
Because it is built using Bitcoin principles and technology, so it has Bitcoin money built in, meaning you actually send / receive money from / to any participant.
As money is built in, the commercial options are different to centralised corporate owned platforms. It would be technically possible to build a platform that supports advertising, however that hasnât really happened to date because influencers can be paid directly from their audience in many different ways. Ad hoc tips, subscriptions, pay to view or pay per time models.
The great thing for content creators is that they control, own and keep all the money they make. There is no third party intermediary or merchant deciding whether they are allowed to be paid or not.
NOSTR is censorship resistant, as there is no way to stop anybody publishing anything they want, in the same way nobody can stop or interfere with a Bitcoin payment.
From an end users point of view, if they want to self censor, they can do this in multiple ways. You can mute users individually, or you can choose to use relays that adhere to your views or interests, so if you donât want to see certain categories of content, you would avoid relays that carry those feeds. You can even run your own relay and curate content that you then charge other like minded users to connect to. You can of course connect to multiple relays for multiple different type of feed.
While NOSTR is a protocol, platforms have to be built to use it, so the first platforms were twitter like clients and they are still very prevalent. However, NOSTR now has clients that emulate most social media platforms, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Soundcloud, WhatsApp etc. They are even creating their own categories as well as emulating other functions such as Office Suite tools or e-commerce shops.
If you want to give it a go, the easiest, but not the best, way to get started is download Primal on your phone from here:
It will create a private key for you and setup a Bitcoin wallet.
Once you have done this, if you want to follow me and message me, I will send you some Bitcoin so you can get started âzappingâ micro payments to other users. My public key is:
nostr:npub1aqakd28d95muqlg6h6nwrvqq5925n354prayckr424k49vzjds4s0c237n
Or you can visit me here:
https://primal.net/p/npub1aqakd28d95muqlg6h6nwrvqq5925n354prayckr424k49vzjds4s0c237n
If you want to see a small part of the ecosystem, then visit https://www.nostrapps.com/ where volunteers are listing some of the many apps that exist already.
NOSTR is being backed by Jack Dorsey, Twitter founder, and you can see his account here:
https://primal.net/p/npub1sg6plzptd64u62a878hep2kev88swjh3tw00gjsfl8f237lmu63q0uf63m
Or you can see his account like this:
Once youâve setup Primal, you can use those same private keys to access any platform you wish and you can use a browser extension such as Alby to manage your keys: https://getalby.com/
Primal looks great, but there are other better functioning twitter like clients, probably the most reliable for iPhone is Damus: https://www.nostrapps.com/apps/damus which I would recommend using if you start to get serious.
The content and user base is very Bitcoin and freedom focused right now, but more and more influencers are starting to use the various platforms and some are transyferring exclusively to it.
For me personally:
-Nostr is credibly decentralized and permissionless, with users controlling their own identities, without too much trade-off. Actually usable, bootstrapping, and here.
-Currently and in the future, users can choose their discovery algorithms, either by exercising choice over which client to use, or eventually toward a marketplace of algorithms available to a client that makes that happen. Nearly endless options for those that want it to happen.
-Nostr's social graph makes my Lightning wallets genuinely better. It gives them venmo-like social discoverability.
-The fact that it's a smaller community is currently an upside for me. I genuinely enjoy posting here. It gives me a place to vent about things or tell random mid-length stories that don't make sense to broadcast to 690k twitter followers or write a blog post about.
I come back because I am interested in the idea of NOSTR, not because it is a fantastic experience because it isnât. Yet.
(The least interesting thing with NOSTR is the ZAPPATONS, by the way. Moronic)
Zaps and no mind control
I feel like I am building capital that will last and is mine on Nostr
Nostr offers the satisfaction of and fulfilment of gardening, sculpting, or working for yourself, as opposed to working for others
Because this is kinda the nostr vibe.
Also, curiosity, curious to see what is being built. Seeing real time development of ideas. Seeing builders come up with ideas and making them.
Less current thing stuff. Bitcoin focus. Not too much noise.
Also, it is enough to say GM, rarely GFY. More humane interactions. It is also OK not to know shit. In X people would probably find some way to look down on you for not knowing something. Hmm yeah. Idk.
Exciting to see where nostr is going even though it already is sufficient. No banning and no easy deletion, full sovereignty if desired.
No algorithm and actually feels more communal. I donât even really post on X. Plus it is all bots.
The most basic thing is healthier emotional balance and relationship with my phone and technology in general. Traditional social media makes you feel like shit and encourages self destructive emotions and habits. Nostr just leaves me feeling better and living a better life.
This is a big thing for me also
Dan day, hell threads, general silliness, typos (penis butter), and gfy đŤ.
Build your own algorithm and people posting stuff frownded upon elsewhere.
That NOSTR removes censorship power from small groups of people.
I used to enjoy sharing news on social media. People started following me sharing news about Bitcoin on Google+. I wake up one morning and boom đĽ
Immediately blocked from connecting with the 130k people that had started following my posts. All because Google suddenly didn't like Bitcoin during the adpocalypse.
If a nostr client or relay tries to shut you up then you just move to another or even better run your own to ensure no one can stop you from communicating.
I am my own algorithm. Open. Permissionless.
zaping unkown people is quite nice
and i am interested how nostr grows
You earn the most scarce money ever known to humanity by just shitpostingđ.
I participate in Nostr because it is the place, the location, that we as Bitcoiners can build cultural capital free and unrestricted. Beyond that it's facilitating the circular economy via not only zaps but also the ability to market goods and services for Bitcoin to specifically Bitcoiners.
Itâs decentralized. No algos, no filters
I'm waiting for more pandemic aware people to get here because the pandemic has really fucked up efforts to find others and organize
At the moment it is just or mainly a social app, but it will be much more. Has the same core philosophies of freedom as Bitcoin. And it being a protocol an decentralizes will allow for it to be much more than current social platforms can be. For example how Facebook was going to create their coin on the app. I feel like I am the user not the product. As a negative I would still highlight I donât know how we are going to manage bot spam
I can say gay and retard
Thefact i can own my data and have the ability to say whatever i think, freedom.
Just like the bitcoin content but obviously it can be any type of content. I also like the fact that its not addictive, i wont lose hours of my life scrolling. I get to consume content iwant to watch
I like the view
The freedom, and the vibes. The freedom vibes.
Ability to have pseudonymous and therefore multiple and/or disposable identities. This makes using nostr much safer than using deep state enmeshed platforms. And is generally safer to keep your real identity private from the entire planet.
And when everyone decides to suddenly call themselves Dan it makes things less confusing.
I loved seeing it be develpoed over these couple years, warts and all. Just feels like you happened upon some hard working Amish like town where everyone was pitching in and making shit happen. Just very bottom up!
Nostr accounts integrating as an oauth mechanism for games and other apps. (like nostr:npub1wz8v75sfhx2h0kggwp328ehr0aanl8c3uxzxqmxk4uvvzzm6xruqtc4qjt)
And our parents aren't using it yet, so it's still cool.
The early Twitter vibes. It feels like a a communication tool where real people are talking, no ads/bots, posting just for engagement
Interoperability. We can now build what we never could have
mainly nostr:npub1wz8v75sfhx2h0kggwp328ehr0aanl8c3uxzxqmxk4uvvzzm6xruqtc4qjt
here for the hardcore libertarianisn and the visceral thrill of sometimes being zapped the equivalent of 2 cents
Same here brother
Whatâs important for me as a content creator is better usability - uploading files, especially video clips is a bitch still⌠creators have to âworkâ harder here than on any other platform to get their content across.
May I write you a long essay about this later tonite?
Will read if you do
worth a read to the bottom before you go on a panel :)
Immunity from corporate and state overlords to control narratives, speech, and destroy my privacy with KYC requirements.
that some technical illiterate dude like you can upload a 4.1 mb animated gif as a profile pic. pure awesomeness!
The zaps: I fucking love the zaps. Literally get to shitpost memes I find funny and people fling sats at me. It would be like if I was telling jokes on the corner and people would toss me quarters. It is the digital version of that
You can't ban me.
I feel free. There is nobody that can censor my speech or my monetary transactions. Nostr is a fresh breath in an otherwise orwellian world of social media.
Also, as a developer, nostr makes it easy to help build tools to fight tyranny.
THIS
Ops canât delete tweets and gaslight their Ls
Came for the censorship resistance, stayed for the people who came for the censorship resistance.
You have to organize your own Nostr. Most underrated feature and the fact that you own everything for all time.
Nostr is incredibly revealing. People who claim they want transparency and free speech yet cling to closed centralized platforms, WE SEE YOU.
In fairness, after probably 8 hours of attempts to get set up with Nostr, I almost gave up. As much as we hate censorship, there's something to be said for the closed centralized platform you can *get to work* over the decentralized protocol you can't.
I really enjoy the vibe here, and I don't feel like I'm being manipulated by a corporate algorithm.
But the main thing is that I want to be contributing to a system that I believe in. Decentralized networking FTW đ
I'm a COMPLETE newbie -- just managed to get signed up today. So I don't fully know yet. But what brought me here was the value of something platform/app-independent, and of owning my own content.
Being connected with some grounded and rational people. Corporate networks foster hysterical and irrational people.
#nostr feels like ye olde internet.
Mainly looking for my tribe, but also the level of independent commentary is really great đ
People are more genuine when not algomanipulated
To change the whole Internet experience for the better again.
Start a google search zu find any AI Software... It got so bad. You end up finding a million subscriptions for shit Software. but the one amazing free Software ist hidden.
nostr:npub1ymt2j3n8tesrlr0yhaheem6yyqmmwrr7actslurw6annls6vnrcslapxnz keeps me coming back along with my fights with my frens about crocs, which are still horrible btw. I also like to sh*t disturb đ
Bahahahaha yesssss queen
What will you gift us with today? A song? Comedy? Turd Soup? We never know!
Zaps man. The possibility of your input being actually valued by other humans is amazing. Similarly showing that appreciation back is wonderful âĄď¸
Gigi, Lyn and Hodl
I think the best things I get out of using at this point relatively buggy, slow, user-hostile ecosystem like Nostr are:
1) Feeling of freedom. Not walking on eggshells and being afraid of shadow-bans or deplatforming.
2) Feeling I am on fertile ground which is already producing a lot of growth, not just platform owned by one team and dependent on right and wrong decisions of aforementioned team (like Facebook, X and other old school corporate social platforms).
When I use Nostr, I feel like I'm following the wisdom of ÂŤskating to where the puck is going to be, not where it has beenÂť.
After joining Nostr, I just followed a bunch of accounts like nobody's business.
Cause I felt like it.
No twitter jail, no "re-verify your account", no captcha hell.
Nostr's all about radical free speech, decentralization, and owning your dataâno Big Brother watching.
That's why we keep coming back.
the smell of freedom
Pure value for value potential with no bullshit in between
The Likes obviously!
The best part of #Nostr is that unlike #Clubhouse and #X Spaces, I don't get "You Dumb B*tch" yelled every 5 seconds and people screaming incomplete sentences at each other constantly.
I don't know how people are able to tolerate mainstream social media anymore.

cc: nostr:npub1rtlqca8r6auyaw5n5h3l5422dm4sry5dzfee4696fqe8s6qgudks7djtfs you know what I mean ;)
No algo is important to me. I think algos distort reality
Not feeling like a closed-source algorithm is attempting to influence my thoughts is definitely nice.
I enjoy the ability to transition between clients while maintaining my follow and follower list, regardless of the type of user experience I prefer (e.g., Amethyst).
The ability to send real money to anyone who has a lightning address, without knowing who they are, their location, or asking anyone for permission, is amazing.
Nostr is amazing, and I can't wait to see what its future brings.
People I follow can't get banned
I can't get banned
No posts can be censored
There is no algorithm that tries to outrage me so I stay longer on the app
permission less digital reach
Feels human vs that satanic ai nuclear testing site
Lack of algos, ownership, and a great BTC echo chamber.
Nostr brings out the best in people. Iâve noticed a considerable change in your tone and toxicity. Could be fatherhood, but itâs a trend Iâve noticed with most users here. Anytime I check Reddit or Twitter, I am reminded that doom scrolling is not helpful to society.
You! â¤ď¸
#nostr feels fresh because itâs a baby. How long will it last?
I post distilled thoughts that I matured on TwitteX, as if TwitteX was the database and the incubator of my thoughts.
No algorithms and censorship free.
nostr is the cure for nihilism
The irreverance
The vibe is just different feels like you can be yourself more. Doesnât feel like a popularity contest
The near complete lack of algorithm forces you to add and remove people from your social sphere actively. Putting full responsibility of managing the info you consume in your own hands.
If I see shit on nostr that I would prefer not to, well that is on me, gotta make better choices of which voices I listen to in future.
Pure, CHOSEN, Signal⌠no noise, no ads⌠just genuine interest and connections
Any live broadcasting?
Answering my own question: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kzw9M3WsjUk&t=2587
zaps, freedom, npubs cross platform, chronological, no data theft, no ownership of other's content by proprietary terms, open source, decentralized, fun, no better solution...
If Hodl is gonna be representing nostr we're fucked
I like that I can say whatever I want and I canât get booted. Btc is âfuck you moneyâ nostr is âfuck you vommunicationâ. Not for the snowflakes tho. Also itâs nice you have your own key and canât get hacked easily
Contingency and redundancy of a % of my online Bitcoin connections if/when they tighten the vise-grip on Twitter and other social media sitesâŚ

transferable identity; can log in and read only view for any npub, so you can view their "algorithm".
no banning, no blocking.
I like being able to talk about our Zionist Occupied Government without worrying about being killed and censored by Jews.
Itâs hard to explain how happy I am on this app compared to any other social media or classic media consumption.
Content not tied to a domain/service and uncensorable. Being unruggable, like with bitcoin in cold storage.
Bitcoin lets you to own your wealth, Nostr lets you to own your mind.
Bitcoin+ Nostr =freedom
The communication and reputation layer for real world (two sided) market activity!! That's the thing everyone is missing. You should just get me to join the panel, lol.
No ads (cannot be overstated), censorship resistant, FOSS, unstoppable protocols and the awesome developers
Having the freedom to call nostr:npub1sg6plzptd64u62a878hep2kev88swjh3tw00gjsfl8f237lmu63q0uf63m a nigger faggot and knowing heâs completely powerless to censor me.
The community. It's a pandora's box, but if you dig a little, there's so much open and welcoming plebs all helping each other.
The tech. It's the first of its kind in this age. Permisionless, uncensorable social media.
Zaps. Cmon, how cool is that.
I enjoy the users. Nostr reminds me of the early days of Bitcoin. People building freedom things without permission. Also I got very tired of other social medias and covid censorship/election censorship was the final straw. Remaining addiction is twitter and I hope Nostr is a healthier version of that. The tools around nostr keys need to improve because the insecure apps and attacks are coming when this gets bigger. The potential of Nostr is huge and way beyond the scope of social media which is exciting. Enjoy the conference. Be sure to wear a suit if you want to fit in!
developers developers developers
the reason I'm coming back is because I know I can never be banned and because I want to see this ecosystem grow
I like zapping and getting zapped and #Apple should let Damus turn it back on again! Now using a workaround of zapplepay.com
No censorship
Memes & Signal
I'm only here for the Zaps and the ownership of your identity - no email, no password. That's pretty much it.
Nothing groundbreaking when it comes to Privacy with Nostr, really. I mean, still gotta use Tor or some VPN. Similar to 'mega instances' in the Fediverse, 3-4 Mega Relays control the network - at least that's how it stands at the moment.
>Relays have all your data in raw text. They know your IP, your name, your location (guessed from IP), your pub key, all your contacts, and other relays, and can read every action you do (post, like, boost, quote, report, etc) with the exception of Private Zaps and Private DMs
Source: https://github.com/TonyGiorgio/onyx?tab=readme-ov-file#privacy-on-relays--nostr

For me itâs mostly for staying up to date on the development of nostr and all the freedom tech. Itâs moving so fast and it gives me hope for the future! đ
whenever someone complains about Twitter on Twitter I come here, "waah they removed the Bitcoin hashtag, waah"
