People don't seem to understand that the vast majority of engagement on platforms like X.com is completely fake. It's either bots, trolls, or people with endless time to waste saying stupid things. They allow all of it deliberately because it keeps more people on the platform.
Where everything is noise, even echoes sound like voices.
On Nostr, those who speak often have a face β and sometimes even a soul.
The users here are built different.

Iβve been telling all my friends. 40 people who truly VALUE your work, enough to pay sats and interact with you directly, is worth 4,000 or more who get a low bitrate version of it that hardly means shit, and that gives the middleman far too much.
You have over 40k followers, lots of people with big npubs actively promote your posts and you're on the follow-recommendation/onboarding lists.
Hardly any one on here has a similar experience and nothing they can do will ever change that. It's the hopelessness, that causes them to leave. They can't see their follower numbers steadily increase with effort and interaction.
I've been hovering around 6k, for over a year, and most of those npubs are dormant or bots. My notes get 5 views, sometimes, and 4 of those are my alts. π
I understand the frustration.
But I didn't plant seeds for numbers β I planted to remain.
Nostr gave me little at first, but it never pretended.
Maybe thatβs what makes it rare.
You were just really early and made some friends in high places. The newcomers can't be early and they have no friends.
There needs to be some other mechanism for growing your follows, other than nepotism and Just Be Me.
Maybe being "early" helps.
But staying matters more.
Over time, presence becomes resonance.
according to nostr.band my follow count is now up to 1970. last time i checked about 6 months ago it was around 800. so growth is happening for me. i'm enjoying my interactions with people more too.
i consider it to be partly due to my character improving and partly due to improvements in the clients. and the steady drip of friendships growing.
So the fifth view is mine? I feel somehow doxed now π

Here there are more real people too, mainstream SM are full of bots and fake accounts that are even automated. Something like that doesn't make sense in Nostr since there is no algorithm in the first place.

The value isn't the same
There's no 1:1 comparison with platform social media and I think we do ourselves a disservice by looking at legacy metrics as the most important. That doesn't mean they cant be useful in some ways, but I think we should recognize just how much noise there is in a typical network that makes a useful comparison extremely difficult.
Especially when what you get out of it, how likely your followers are to see your content, and the level of connection to the community can vary so greatly.

The key isnβt strategy β itβs authenticity.
Follow people you genuinely find interesting. Reply sincerely. Show who you are.
Nostr is still small enough that listening matters. And friendship often begins right there.
