yes, they could still transact on the earth-chain, but could never mine blocks out there. the horizon is some sliver under 10 light-minutes away, as you couldn't submit a block in time. sometimes you might sneak one in, but you're playing at a huge disadvantage as even when you got a block, you'd likely not get it the rest of the network in time.

2/3 multi sig with geographically distributed keys and multiple wallet config backups has none of these failures.
i just don’t see how SS + passphrase is superior to 2/3 MS, unless it’s for small amounts and quick access.
1 and 2 are solved by making sufficient backups.
3 is irrelevant because we are using passphrases.
4 is a trust thing. If the person who would be inheriting the sats can't be trusted to not steal everything from you, maybe they don't deserve them. Alternatively, maybe you only reveal a portion of your stack (emphasis again on having multiple wallets).
There are no perfect solutions, only different approaches.
There are no great ways to do inheritance planning with single sig.

End of 2023 I bought and used a pile of hardware wallets to evaluate to determine the most safe to recommend to new users that are still learning and not necessarily tech savvy. All were with Bitcoin-only focus, no shitcoin support, in $60-$200 range. After testing 7 of the most common that fit the target specs, coldcard didn’t end up at the top when looking through a UX, UI, and safety lens. I’m wanting to do this again in case my answers would change. Admittedly UI/UX are subjective and rely on my experience. So some of these criteria are my feel of the devices and enjoyability of use and my guess of reliability in long term use. This month I plan to revisit this testing among today’s hardware wallet options. I’ll also be able to adjust rankings based on using my favorites for an extended period.

How conceptually is Bitkey any different from Ledger Recover? Set aside exact technical implementations and just the high level concept is remarkably similar. Why is Bitkey viewed as inherently superior?
Everyone loves Bitkey and hates ledger recover when the overall trust and security model and assumptions that go with it are actually quite close. I feel like this is a glaring hypocrisy in the community that causes an actual problem because we aren’t analyzing self custody tradeoffs on merit, but instead feelings/vibes. If anything ledger recover is less trusted because you need two companies or governments in two different countries to collude to rug you versus only one company or one country for Bitkey.
THE BITKEY MODEL FROM A TRUST PERSPECTIVE IS STRICTLY BETTER.
THIS IS POSSIBLE BECAUSE IT IS BITCOIN ONLY AND USES NATIVE PROTOCOL LEVEL MULTISIG.
