Antim the Ivirian, a Georgian by birth, was captured and enslaved, yet his wisdom and skill led him to become the Metropolitan of Wallachia. He established the first printing press in Wallachia, publishing liturgical books in Romanian, and championed education. His reforms angered powerful boyars, who falsely accused him of treason. In 1716, he was exiled and murdered on his way to a monastery.
