The Advent Ember Days
The Advent Ember Days are a special time to refocus our devotions in this season of anticipation. This is the new year of the Church, the first season of the liturgical calendar, and we are all as busy as can be getting our homes and souls fresh and ready for the birth of Christ. During the Advent Ember Days, we can breathe a little amid all the bustle of the season and spend those days gathering silence and stillness.
This year, the Ember Days precede Christmas directly. Ember Saturday is actually the day before Christmas Eve! And this close proximity gives us an opportunity to focus deeply on anticipating Christ during these days. In the four days right before Christmas Eve, we have the opportunity to spend three of them fasting and praying for a good end to the year, for priests, who are often so busy during Advent and Christmas, and for the Church as a whole. With so much dissension in the Church these days, it’s a wonderful chance to reach out to God for our priests and bishops.

In the winter (North Hemisphere), I like to make warming stews as fast-breaking meals at the end of the day. This year, I’m planning a simple squash, white bean, and kale stew to serve with an apricot-pepper sourdough loaf (inspired by my parish priest, who is a genius with sourdoughs) for Ember Wednesday. Friday and Saturday meals are still in the planning stage – especially as I’ll also be cooking for Vilia (or Christmas Eve’s dinner), which is also a meatless meal for us.
A Prayer for Vocations in the Ember Days of Winter
Throughout the Ember fast, it’s a good idea to pray both for current priests and for future vocations. It is such a good time to pray for vocations to the priesthood and religious life within our own families. I like to skip schooling on Ember Wednesday and Friday, and instead spend a little time telling stories of the saints, especially priests, monks, nuns, and hermits. There are a host of holy men and women to choose from.
In Advent, I like to focus on the saints whose feasts are in December. The hermits Sts. Grwst and Macarius. The monks St. John of the Cross and St. Eigil of Fulda. Nuns like St. Basilissa and St. Irmina the Abbess. Priests like St. Eustace White the Martyr and St. Ambrose the Bishop. I think it’s important for our children to see the world of religious life as at least as rich and varied as that of married life. Full of mystery, danger, joy, and love. In the dark, Ember Days of Advent I sit before the embers of my own little fire and pray:
Eternal Father, rouse our hearts out of the sleep of sin, so that we may clear the path of Your Son into our souls.
Make a gentle road to You in the hearts of my Children, call them to the life that will let them love You most fully. Fill them with joy and peace. Let them abound in hope and rest confident in the power of the Holy Spirit through the darkness of this quiet anticipation.
O Lord preserve us, give us life, and make us blessed upon the earth. Be to us, O Lord, a tower of strength as we face the hidden pathways of life. Let us live them in imitation of Your beloved saints, with quiet duty and unshakeable joy. Amen.

O jejum das Quatro Têmporas

Quem já faz sua abstinência de carne às sextas-feiras, observando o mandamento da Igreja, tem agora mais um sacrifício para oferecer a Deus, de estação a estação. Saiba em que consiste essa piedosa prática litúrgica, hoje esquecida, mas jamais abolida.

As Quatro Têmporas (Quatuor Tempora, em latim) são celebrações litúrgicas da Igreja, ligadas às mudanças das quatro estações e instituídas para a santificação do ano civil. Eram consideradas tempos especiais de vigília e oração, durante os quais a Igreja procedia à ordenação de novos sacerdotes e recomendava aos católicos o jejum e a abstinência de carne.
Olhando-as a partir do hemisfério sul, temos:
◉ as Têmporas da Quaresma, na primeira semana deste tempo litúrgico, marcando o início do outono;
◉ as Têmporas de Pentecostes, celebradas na Oitava desta solenidade, marcando o início do inverno (no hemisfério Sul);
◉ as Têmporas de São Miguel, na terceira semana de setembro, entre a Exaltação da Santa Cruz (14 de setembro) e o dia de São Miguel Arcanjo (29 de setembro), que indicam a passagem da primavera; e
◉ as Têmporas do Advento, na terceira semana deste tempo litúrgico, anunciando a chegada do verão (no hemisfério Sul).
Segundo a Legenda Áurea, do bem-aventurado Tiago de Varazze, teria sido o Papa São Leão Magno a estabelecer, no século V, essas comemorações. O Liber Pontificalis faz referência ao Papa Calisto, nos anos 200, mas sua origem, provavelmente, é ainda anterior a isso, datando da época dos Apóstolos.
Havia nelas, em primeiro lugar, uma relação de continuidade com o Antigo Testamento (cf. Zc 8, 19), pois os judeus costumavam jejuar quatro vezes por ano: uma por ocasião da Páscoa; uma antes de Pentecostes; outra antes da Festa dos Tabernáculos, em setembro; e uma última, por fim, antes da Dedicação, que se dava em dezembro. Desde o começo, também, essa instituição serviu como uma forma de “cristianizar” os festivais pagãos que aconteciam em Roma, em torno da agricultura e das estações.
Os dias em que se faziam esses jejuns sazonais eram a quarta, a sexta-feira e o sábado:
◉ a quarta, por ser o dia em que o Senhor foi traído por Judas Iscariotes;
◉ a sexta, por ser o dia de sua crucificação; e
◉ o sábado, por ser o dia em que ele passou no túmulo e no qual os Apóstolos ficaram de luto por sua morte.
Também essa é uma prática imemorial, mencionada, por exemplo, pelo Didaquê, um dos mais antigos escritos cristãos de que se tem notícia.
Da Cidade Eterna a observância das Quatro Têmporas se difundiu por todo o Ocidente ainda na Alta Idade Média, sendo confirmada mais tarde pela autoridade de vários pontífices romanos — dentre eles, o Papa São Gregório VII, que reinou na Igreja de 1073 a 1085.
O alcance desse costume foi tão amplo a ponto de influenciar a culinária do Extremo Oriente: o tempurá, prato feito à base de mariscos e vegetais, nasceu no Japão do século XVI graças à atuação de missionários espanhóis e portugueses.
As Têmporas hoje
Uma celebração assim tão importante não poderia simplesmente ser abolida, sem mais nem menos. E de fato não foi, ainda que a sua influência tenha diminuído a olhos vistos.
No Missal de 1962, as Têmporas eram observadas como “férias de segunda classe”, dias feriais de especial importância, que se sobrepunham inclusive a certas festas de santos. Cada dia tinha a sua Missa própria. Hoje, no entanto, ficou sob o encargo das conferências episcopais e das dioceses determinar o tempo e o modo de celebração das Quatro Têmporas, de acordo com prescrição da Sagrada Congregação para o Culto Divino. Em 1966, a Constituição Apostólica Paenitemini, do Papa Paulo VI, confirmou todas as sextas-feiras do ano como dias penitenciais, mas, ao mesmo tempo, os jejuns das Têmporas deixaram de ser obrigatórios.
Por que continuar jejuando, afinal, nessas épocas específicas do ano, é novamente o beato Tiago de Varazze que nos explica. O escritor medieval apresenta em sua Legenda Áurea pelo menos oito razões para mantermos essa piedosa tradição, ainda que ela tenha caído no esquecimento em nossos dias. A mais significativa dessas razões está ligada aos quatro temperamentos, pois
"o sangue aumenta na primavera, a bílis no verão, a melancolia no outono e a fleuma no inverno. Consequentemente, jejua-se na primavera para debilitar o sangue da concupiscência e da louca alegria, pois o sanguíneo é libidinoso e alegre. No verão, para enfraquecer a bílis do arrebatamento e da falsidade, pois o bilioso é por natureza colérico e falso. No outono, para acalmar a melancolia da cupidez e da tristeza, pois o melancólico é por natureza invejoso e triste. No inverno, para diminuir a fleuma da estupidez e da preguiça, pois o fleumático é por natureza estúpido e preguiçoso."
Sob essa perspectiva, o jejum das Quatro Têmporas converte-se em uma forma de atenuarmos as tendências desordenadas de nossos temperamentos.

Mas, além de estar relacionada às estações do ano, a prática das Têmporas também se relaciona intimamente com o sacerdócio católico, pois era costume da Igreja de Roma (que depois se estendeu a toda a cristandade) ordenar os seus padres justamente nesses dias de jejum, mais especificamente na vigília de sábado para domingo. A ideia que transparecia era muito clara: o povo obter de Deus, com suas orações e penitências, a graça de um clero digno e santo.
O rol de motivos por que devemos fazer penitência não se esgota, evidentemente, nestas linhas. Assim como as quatro estações vão se substituindo ano após ano, e sem nenhuma trégua, assim também nós, conscientes da fragilidade de nossa carne e desejosos de reparar os Corações Imaculados de Jesus e de Maria pelos tantos pecados contra eles cometidos, devemos viver em atitude permanente de mortificação.
É verdade, o termo “morte” pode soar mal aos ouvidos modernos. Muitos gostariam, na verdade, se pudessem, de apagá-lo de quaisquer pregações, homilias ou documentos da Igreja. Nos Evangelhos, entretanto, as palavras de Nosso Senhor não podiam ser mais claras:
"Se alguém quer vir após mim, renegue-se a si mesmo, tome cada dia a sua cruz e siga-me (Lc 9, 23).
Se o grão de trigo não cai na terra e não morre, fica sozinho. Mas, se morre, produz muito fruto. Quem tem apego à sua vida vai perdê-la; quem despreza a sua vida neste mundo vai conservá-la para a vida eterna (Jo 12, 24-25)."
Por isso, a quem nos vier perguntar, em tom de zombaria, por que queremos morrer observando jejuns e abstinências, respondamos com caridade, mas convictos: nós não somos “masoquistas”, só o que queremos é amar a Jesus Cristo, que nos amou primeiro e se entregou por cada um de nós (cf. Gl 2, 20).
É nesse contexto que se insere o jejum das Quatro Têmporas. Fiquemos de olho, pois, no calendário litúrgico antigo e atentemo-nos aos dias em que a Igreja convida seus filhos a mais esse ato de generosidade (ainda que vivido de forma privada). Viver em família essa tradição pode ser tanto uma forma de testemunho para o mundo moderno, tão dado aos prazeres da carne, quanto uma oportunidade para formar os próprios filhos na escola da santidade. Quem já faz sua abstinência de carne às sextas, portanto, observando o mandamento da Igreja, tem agora mais um sacrifício para oferecer a Deus — lembrando sempre que quem ama, longe de contentar-se com o “mínimo” das obrigações, o que mais deseja, na verdade, é dar o “máximo” de si próprio.
Mesmo que doa, portanto, não deixemos de nos doar! Sirva-nos de modelo Santa Jacinta Marto, vidente de Fátima, que tinha o comer alimentos amargos como um de seus “sacrifícios habituais” e que, um dia, interpelada por sua prima para que deixasse de comer as bolotas dos carvalhos, porque amargavam muito, deu-lhe, em sua simplicidade, esta bela lição: “Pois é por amargar que o como, para converter os pecadores.”

The Advent Ember Days
The Advent Ember Days are a special time to refocus our devotions in this season of anticipation. This is the new year of the Church, the first season of the liturgical calendar, and we are all as busy as can be getting our homes and souls fresh and ready for the birth of Christ. During the Advent Ember Days, we can breathe a little amid all the bustle of the season and spend those days gathering silence and stillness.
This year, the Ember Days precede Christmas directly. Ember Saturday is actually the day before Christmas Eve! And this close proximity gives us an opportunity to focus deeply on anticipating Christ during these days. In the four days right before Christmas Eve, we have the opportunity to spend three of them fasting and praying for a good end to the year, for priests, who are often so busy during Advent and Christmas, and for the Church as a whole. With so much dissension in the Church these days, it’s a wonderful chance to reach out to God for our priests and bishops.

In the winter (North Hemisphere), I like to make warming stews as fast-breaking meals at the end of the day. This year, I’m planning a simple squash, white bean, and kale stew to serve with an apricot-pepper sourdough loaf (inspired by my parish priest, who is a genius with sourdoughs) for Ember Wednesday. Friday and Saturday meals are still in the planning stage – especially as I’ll also be cooking for Vilia (or Christmas Eve’s dinner), which is also a meatless meal for us.
A Prayer for Vocations in the Ember Days of Winter
Throughout the Ember fast, it’s a good idea to pray both for current priests and for future vocations. It is such a good time to pray for vocations to the priesthood and religious life within our own families. I like to skip schooling on Ember Wednesday and Friday, and instead spend a little time telling stories of the saints, especially priests, monks, nuns, and hermits. There are a host of holy men and women to choose from.
In Advent, I like to focus on the saints whose feasts are in December. The hermits Sts. Grwst and Macarius. The monks St. John of the Cross and St. Eigil of Fulda. Nuns like St. Basilissa and St. Irmina the Abbess. Priests like St. Eustace White the Martyr and St. Ambrose the Bishop. I think it’s important for our children to see the world of religious life as at least as rich and varied as that of married life. Full of mystery, danger, joy, and love. What Are the Ember Days?
The Ember Days are made up of a Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday in each season: spring, summer, fall, and winter. In each season, the days follow a particular feast day. In the spring, they follow Ash Wednesday. In the summer, they’re right after Pentecost. In the fall, the Ember Days fall after the feast of the Holy Cross. The winter days follow the feast of St. Lucy. During the Ember Days, we fast and abstain from meat for the Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday of Ember Week in thanksgiving for the blessings received during the previous season, the fruits of the earth, and especially for our priests and seminarians.
Each season’s Ember Days are designed to thank God for the fruits of the harvest, particularly those fruits that we use in liturgy – olives, grapes, and wheat. In the winter, we focus primarily on thanking God for the olive harvest that gives us the holy oils we’ll use all year to bless and anoint. I have a few blessed oils on my own home altar – oils blessed in devotion to St. Joseph, St. Elijah, St. Paraskeva, and St. Anna, as well as two particularly devoted to Our Lady. During the winter Ember Days, I like to use these oils a little more often, blessing family with them and anointing our Christmas candles. There is a particular blessing for candles that we like to use in Advent:
"Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God, bless these candles at our request. By virtue of the Holy Cross, Lord, pour upon them the virtue of Your heavenly blessing. You have given them to mankind to drive away the dark. May they, at this sign of the Cross, receive such blessing that wherever they may be lit or placed, the princes of darkness may depart and be afraid and fly in fear from those houses with all their helpers. Nor may they dare again to trouble or bother those who serve You, Almighty God, who live and reign forever and ever. Amen."
The candles are then sprinkled with holy water and anointed with an oil. Ideally, we ask our local priest to perform the blessing, but this blessing is one that the head of the household can perform as well.
Where Does the Term “Ember” Come From?
The term “Ember” comes primarily from a familial and casual use of the phrase quatuor tempora. As Latin gradually mingled with the vernaculars in various locations throughout Europe, many Latin words blended and changed to become new parts of new languages. Quatuor tempora slowly changed to Quatember and eventually just “Ember.” Since these days have been a part of the Church’s calendar since the fifth century at least, they’ve had a long time to fall into the lives and casual language of Catholics everywhere.
But during the changes of Vatican II, Ember Days were neglected. These days, though they’ve never been fully abandoned, Ember Days are unknown and unfortunately neglected by many Catholics.
