-What’s a movie from the past 25 years that hasn’t gotten enough attention in your view? Something that punches way above its weight. šŸ˜‡

-The spicier question. What’s a movie from that same time period that is very popular, including kind of in your own social circle, that you think is kind of mid or overrated but it’s too awkward to say, but you’ll drop it in a Nostr comment? 😈

Fight Club

Overrated from the same year: Blair Witch Project

12 Monkeys was very underrated

I would agree except I feel Fight Club got a lot of notoriety and wouldn’t say it’s ā€œunderrated.ā€ One of my favorite films though, I did 3 different film analysis projects on it from 3 completely different angles through film school šŸ˜‚

It’s still a ā€œcultā€ film though. I doubt many people know about it and even less actually understood it.

Event Horizon comes to mind...

Pretty good movie

That movie scared me.

One of the first DVDs I ever bought!

šŸ˜‡

Underrated: King Arthur - legend of the sword, kingsman #1, Tenet

i curate a movie, i watch it, i take lessons and move on

1st question: The Fountain

2nd question: Deja Vu

+1 The Fountain is fantastic

The fountain was my pick too šŸ¤

I’m one of the rare ones that really enjoyed Mother! (another Arronofsky that was almost universally panned).

He is overall underrated as a director. Black Swan & The Wrestler were great too. I think his movies evoke strong negative emotions, and that turns a lot of the audience off. Not fluffy enough.

12 Angry Men was a great movie, and the newer remake in the 90’s. Those need more attention to help draw attention to being proper jurors.. as in nullification as well!

Lots of movies are overblown.. seriously.. Fast & Furious and those like it.

The Fountain, an amazing SciFi Romance meditation on life and death. Highly underrated. Darren Aronofsky's greatest IMHO.

Overrated?

Interstellar. I fell asleep.

Interstellar was terrible. My wife and I almost couldn't finish it. I'm willing to give it another tey though, sometimes things change

The fountain was excellent!

Thanks for sharing this.

Looking forward to watching The Fountain.

Always on the lookout for good SciFi. A lot of junk dominates the genre, unfortunately.

I’ve not seen a SciFi Romance, that I can remember. This may be a first for me.

Both of the lead actors are great too, especially Hugh Jackman. He is capable of so much more than being The Wolverine. He did a great job of displaying emotional depth in this film.

For romance (more like romcoms; The Fountain is drama) with scifi: Safety Not Guaranteed, Kate and Leopold.

IMO, they are not amazing, but they are not bad either.

Cool, thank you. I usually watch SciFi alone. Safety Not Guaranteed sounds like something my wife and I can watch together.

I went to the movie theater one day and I didn't know what to watch. I ended up watching The Fountain, knowing absolutely nothing about it. It was a pleasant surprise.

Oh, I wish. I didn't learn of it until it had left theaters. Lucky you!

I didn’t think Mad Max was that great, Moon with Sam Rockwell is a pretty good under the radar thriller

Moon was great!

LOVED Moon. Sam Rockwell was mind-blowing in it, and it was a tense, claustrophobic ride of the best kind.

Sam Rockwell’s one of my favorite actors, gotta watch some more of his movies

Mine too! He is a chameleon of an actor. From Hitchhiker's Guide to The Green Mile, I almost never see him and think, 'Oh, there's Sam Rockwell.'

Moon was directed by David Bowie’s son, Duncan Jones.

He also directed Source Code, staring Jake Gyllenhaal which, while not as good as Moon is also a fun watch.

Good to know, Jake Gyllenhaal’s movies are always solid, prisoners was awesome

Volcano high. The original or the insane dubbed one with us celebs

God Bless America, a sick (but entertaining) satire by Bobcat Goldthwait. Kingdom of Heaven, for schlocky Hollywood at its best. Springbreakers a lewd and trashy crime flick with James Franco in an excellent role.

God Bless America is a glorious mess of a film šŸ˜‚

I try to distinguish between ā€œextremely entertainingā€ and ā€œgood.ā€ lol.

Love Spring Breakers. I'm gonna watch Harmony Korine's other films

I have to check them out myself… but Spring Breakers was a pleasant surprise!

Sprang breaaak 4ever

underrated: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

That is one of the best movies all time

My wife and I particularly love 'meet joe black' and nobody ever talks about it

I don't watch many movies so I'll do the anime version of the 2 questions

Underrated= Orb: On the Movements of the Earth (2024)

Overrated= Monster (2004)

In the ā€œnot a movieā€ categories:

šŸ˜‡ Devilman Crybaby, a beautiful, wrenching, glorious, horrifying series that I loved and I’ve never heard anyone discuss IRL

😈 Squid Game, I hated it and want that time back

Omigosh I loved Squid Game 🤯

Underrated- The Prestige

Overrated - Lord of the Rings

The Prestige was good

I had the prestige on my list as well. šŸ¤

Aside from Wolf of Wall Street, just about every movie since 2000 has been mid. 😭

Superbad was not mid.

Edge case :)

Disagree

The Liam Neeson Les Miserables for the first one (never mind that it’s 27 years old!).

And (also 27 years old), the Big Lebowski.

Dang why can’t I name any movies less than 25 years old šŸ˜‚

Another amazing underrated movie is Gattaca.

And another overrated movie is Pulp Fiction.

I second Gattaca. Ethan Hawker was amazing in it.

ā€œYou wanna know how I’m doing it Anton?

I didn’t save anything for the swim back.ā€

Still gives me chills.

šŸ¤

My brother-in-law says Ethan Hawk is the villain of the movie. He says he's selfish and jeopardizing the mission.

Y'know, it's been a very long time since I actually saw the movie. It is probably time I give it another go. Your BIL may be right!

🤨

No.

Yeah, well, you know, that's just like uh his opinion, man.

I called him heartless, heh.

šŸ˜‚

a bronx tale

Underrated: Eternal sunshine of a spotless mind

Overrated: Any of the Star Wars movies

Prisoners

Heavy film

In the mood for love

Watchmen. Incredibly under appreciated.

I still do not understand why it doesn’t get the love. I thought it was fantastic and like it better than all the marvel movies combined.

I thought it was okay. I absolutely love the graphic novel, though.

Movie was great. The series was a forgettable mess.

Underrated: City Island (2009)

Unpredictable plot, compelling characters, humor, and emotional depth.

It’s a great film and I’ve never heard anyone talk about it.

Overrated: Snow White 2025.

Swiss Army Man- The Human Condition

28 Days Later- storytelling

Jouex Noel- Compassion

I loved Swiss Army man! Was not expecting to at all. One of the best movies no one will watch.

The music for it was one of my favorite parts of it. True hidden gem.

1. The Prestige (despite it being from Christopher Nolan it never gets the credit it deserves imo)

2. This is far harder and I will comment my own post when I think of one (excellent question)

The Prestige šŸ¤

Underrated: Take Shelter and Midnight Special

Overrated: Hamilton

Lifetime movies in general are overlooked gems:

Stalked by my Doctor

Mother’s Worst Nightmare

The Wrong Teacher

Double Daddy

Limitless

Loved the movie. The TV show was awful though.

I’ve seen exactly none of the movies mentioned so far. šŸ˜…

First Reformed by Paul Schrader and Perfect Days by Wim Wenders are two faves from recent history. Scared to return to Oppenheimer šŸ˜‚

Underdogs from the last 25yrs:

- The Battery

- The Green Knight

- Mad God

- Pearl

- Nightcrawler

- The Prestige

Controversial overrated the last 25yrs:

- Deadpool

- V for Vendetta

My pick if 1 of each:

- The Battery (underdog)

- V for Vendetta (overrated)

V for Vendetta being overrated is wild. Not a heavily talked about movie, but filled with story and plot. I love that move, and give it a watch every November 5th 🌹

The graphic novel is so so so much better.

Like any Alan Moore work if you've read the graphic novel the movie pales in comparison.

I like the movie, but it’s overrated. Guess I understood the assignment by choosing this movie it appears lol.

Phantom Thread…. Amazing work by PTA and DDL as usual.. Vicky Krieps should have been nominated for an Oscar. Movie should have won a few Oscar’s IMO

Phantom Thread was fucking amazing. PTA and DDL two of my favs.

Forgot to mention it but it also had the perfect score… beautiful movie

Momentum Generation

Deserve to be better known today:

Tuck Everlasting (2002)

Interstellar (2014)

I was going to add

The Best Years of Their Lives (1946)

The Secret Garden (1993)

Meet Joe Black (1998)

Farewell, My Lovely (1975)

but they're outside the quarter-century limit.

yay for Tuck Everlasting and The Secret Garden books

Little Nicky

Underrated: The Grindhouse double feature. It’s really gotta be watched as a package deal with the fake trailers to work.

Fun fact: I literally watched that in the theater. I didn’t like it too much (didn’t hate it either), but my college friends dragged me to it, and now I get to say I was there.

Hot Rod

Europa was pretty good

Boondock Saints

The Metrix (plus/minus the cutoff)

Waking Life

This is one of my favorite movies of all time.

The Nines with with Ryan Reynard. Never met anyone that has seen it. But contrary to the movie koalas are dumb smooth brains.

Edge of Tomorrow

Extremely underrated, especially for a movie starring the biggest actor of the last two generations.

Quite good.

Used to love Norbit ngl

An interesting movie. If you like this kind of time looping movies, I can suggest a few. šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

Please, do.

Sure.

1. Groundhog day (you might have already seen this)

2. Triangle

3. Time crimes (a Spanish movie - Los cronocrĆmenes)

4. Timeloop - https://youtu.be/35z4bChYS_A?si=jB_USppW6FriSwU8

5. Maanaadu (means Large Gathering/Political rally - a Tamil movie)

Among these, Time crimes and Triangle are my personal favs.

I 100% agree on Time Crimes. Never heard of Timeloop, it's Italian? It has terrible ratings, is it really worth it?

No, it is an Indian one - a youtube short (has CC).

Groundhog Day is one of those movies that if it’s on, will cause me to immediately stop what I’m doing to watch

I watched 1, 2 and 3. I'll look for the other 2. Thanks!

Boiler Room

Sucker Punch

It's not exactly a "smart" film, and it got mediocre reviews, but I like watching it more than once, and "punching above its weight" describes it remarkably well (pun harvested).

I date myself by violating the time windows

1) Raising Arizona must be rediscovered

2) Return of the Jedi is meh.

RotJ is part cool movie (the parts with Luke) edited together with a weak movie (ewoks & stuff)

That's the Star Wars movie where the downward trend started, agreed. They managed to end the trilogy well though.

All Star Wars is GOATED. Even the "bad" ones. May the force be with you, always.

Art is subjective. I'm glad you found something you enjoy āœŒļø

I'm a musician you don't need to explain subjective opinion on art, I just live Star wars and was joking around lol.

I didn't explain, just stated. Enjoy your Star Wars, I enjoy mine šŸ«‚

Last 25 years šŸ¤”

Swordfish - loved it.

Boondock Saints - meh and can’t mention it to the bros. We are older now so maybe they’ll understand the meh.

Boondock Saints was a child of its time. Most people enjoyed it at the time. I don't think it aged well.

About Swordfish: I like it, but none of the programming stuff makes any sense at all. It's like they on purpose tried it to make it as stupid as possible.

Oh yeah I’m ok with the dumb programming, that didn’t age well either. But overall, pretty cool story, and just and under rated movie. 6.5 on RT I think.

Ink 2009. Indie film that doesn't have the greatest special effects but the storyline is something deep in the subconscious. A Father trying to save his daughter.

Overrated: Mad Max Fury Road

Was a complete dogshit movie with absolutely no plot. I want my two hours of time back.

I don't have a zapping thingamabob, but I wish I could zap you! I watched Ink at some point in my life and thought it was great. I wanted to rewatch it at some point and I couldn't remember the name. I'll finally be able to watch it again! It's such a hidden gem that my searches for this movie had been fruitless.

You're welcome! It's a great movie! Hard to find because it wants to correct ink to something else. Enjoy!

John Wick

Two movies that are in my top 3;

- Blood Diamond

- Mia And The White Lion

Beautiful Boy comes to mind first as an underrated movie.

I know it was nominated for several awards, but in my opinion Hacksaw Ridge may be my favorite war movie of all time.

I found Sicario to be incredibly boring, hard to hear, hard to see, and overrated compared to what most people and critics thought when it came out, and I love a good cerebral movie

Blue Giant. It's an anime but about jazz music. Was on a very limited theatrical release in North America and sold out everywhere. It's now streaming, thought due to demand.

Hardcore Henry

Overrated:

Underrated: The Wackness

Overrated: Whiplash, La La Land

Underrated: ✨Sing Street ✨ (my favorite movie ever)

Overrated: Interstellar (I found it plodding and thought the plot was obvious/lame)

Legend of Bagger Vance

Underrated and sadly hated by most: Catwoman

Overrated in own social circle: scary movie 1-3

Arbitrage 2012 with Richard gere. Insanely good

Primer

Underrated: Dan in real life

I think Band of Brothers is something special. Not a movie but I think it’s the best WWII story on film.

Lots of great shows but most movies are becoming unwatchable

Lord of war

Heavy film

Glory Road is a powerful story about the Texas Western basketball team of 1966 winning the NCAA championship with an all black starting lineup

Underrated.. Blade Runner, Kingpin...

Overrated... Everything Everywhere.... 🤢🤢🤢

Underrated: Upgrade

I like sci-fi, so:

Fifth Element.

Star Wars 1-3.

My generation loved the originals and wanted to love anything new so much...

Frailty

Overrated: Avatar. Miss me with that played-out white savior crap

Popular but still underrated: The Fifth Element. Saw this again in a theater recently and it holds up amazingly well!

Dark Skies

Time Trap (2017)

Time dilation concepts were intriguing.

I try to watch all (decent) time travelers movies but I missed this one, thanks!

Me too! What movies can you recommend?

I liked:

* The Butterfly Effect

* Terminator Franchise

* Tenet

* Twelve Monkeys

* Arrival

* DƩjƠ Vu

Not so great, but ok:

* Synchronicity

* 57 Seconds

Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy

Spectral

underrated: nobody with Bob Odenkirk

overrated: hobit

Green Book

In Time.

It kind of represents our present world. The red button was pressed too often > satsvsfiat

With Timberlake? For me it's one of this movie that build an amazing background, prepare every everything to deal with a complexe and highly interesting topic and meh... šŸ’©šŸ’©šŸ’© it just end up as a survive/revange/kill the bad guy, souless plot.

There are so much like that that miss a huge potential. Also a German movie about people selling their living years for money (like you can get 10 years older and the other person get 10 years younger). So many ethical implication, so much potential to portrait our society, but no fuck, second half is pure revenge plot with not expectation and a totally expected ending.

Or The Passengers. This movie should have started when the women wakes up, and we discover later what the man did before as she figures it out. It could have been a SciFi masterpiece.

"The great hack"

Exploring how a data company named Cambridge Analytica came to symbolise the dark side of social media in the wake of the 2016 U.S. presidential election, as uncovered by journalist Carole Cadwalladr.

Underrated: The Fountain

Overrated: Anything Marvel.

The Fountain was one of my top choices too.

Mad Max Fury Road is a masterpiece.

Anything Spielberg

Can't think of an underrated one, but Matrix is overrated IMO. It's not bad, but is not as good as its fans claim it to be.

I honestly believe Napoleon Dynamite is a work of genuis. Oh and from an orange pill perspective, the Big Short is great.

Napoleon Dynamite is the shit!

Your mom's a work of genius.

Hahahaha

First appearance of , digitalization ever , a lot of messages in this movie

Underrated: The Method (2005) – It's so cool, I love it! The whole movie is just one big job interview. 🤩 šŸ˜‚ šŸ˜Ž

Overrated: Avatar (2009) – It has zero story, no real characters, and it's just ideological brainwashing. It's only overhyped because of the 3D tech.

Uhh, Avatar is the most overrated film ever made.

underrated: Breach (I'm a sucker for good drama based on real events)

overrated: Donnie Darko (I know I'm probably way in the minority here; but I think that's kind of the point)

... Breach (2007), that is.

V for Vendetta

Bicentennial Man. One of Robin Williams best starrings.

Have you seen awakenings? Another good robin williams showing

I haven't! I'll add it to the list!

Loved this film as a kid

I feel this. I watch it everyday on my birthday. Great reminder of living life.

Year*

underrated: the room (tommy wisesu)

Children of Men is an underrated masterpiece from the past 25 years, while Avatar dazzles visually but feels narratively overrated.

V for Vendetta. Surprised how many haven't seen it and it's almost a mirror of UK right now.

Cool movie. Did you know the Chancellor is played by the same person that played Winston in the 1984 film? Pretty cool.

Yes, John Hurt was an amazing actor and was part of some amazing movies. 1984, V for Vendetta, Alien. R.I.P. 2017. ā¤ļø

Underrated: Primer

Overrated: There Will Be Blood

HIGHLY UNDERRATED

Victoria (2015), two hours of 1 shot magic

Most ambitious and well executed movie of all time

Epic film! Victoria is a technical masterpiece and Laia Costa is amazing in it.

Underrated: 28 Days later, Thirteen Lives, Locke, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri, In Bruge

Jesus,Save us from your followers.

Overrated movies? Too awkward to say. Some things are better left unsaid. 🤫

Coherence and Primer, can never get enough love for how good they are on shoestring budgets.

Tenet is overrated.

If you like westerns ā€œSlow Westā€ is a beautiful artsy film and ā€œThe Propositionā€ is a phenomenal Australian western.

UNDER-RATED

The Guest (2014)

Past 25 years, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (Ben Stiller version). A perfect film.

25+ years, Rob Roy. One of the finest movies ever made, and Tim Roth is the most memorable villain I’ve ever seen.

Hannibal was a movie that didn’t get nearly the attention it deserved. It picks up where the creepy storyline of Silence of the Lambs left off and makes it into an adventure, with the escaped Hannibal Lecter as a sort of antihero, living a humble, anonymous, yet idyllic life as a library curator in a beautiful Italian city, his greatest joy found in the art and culture of his surroundings.

Anthony Hopkins and Julianne Moore are both incredible and you end up rooting for both, which is uncommon in a movie about a criminal on the run, being pursued by an FBI agent.

The soundtrack to the movie is beautiful as well, and I recommend reading the book version after seeing the movie, as the ending is quite different.

Memento is the movie version of pocket lint that finds its way into the crevices of your phone speaker. This is not because the movie sucks, because I’ve seen it and it’s OK. I’m just reminded of it all the time like a bad fart in a department store.

I have had several brain surgeries, and I have had a decent amount of brain tissue removed. As a result, I have a pronounced problem with memory. I also have lots and lots of tattoos, most of which I got before the accident that caused my epilepsy.

Just about everywhere I go, some genius pops up who sees my big ol’ brain surgery scar, then my neck/arms/hands/legs, then makes a mental leap and says, ā€œOh, wow! Have you ever seen that movie Memento? You remind me of that guy on there! Ha ha! You ever think of doing something like that? You know, tattooing stuff on you to remember them!ā€

A quick glance will tell you that I literally don’t have ANY tattoo real estate left at this point, unless you count my face, which I’m not going to tattoo because I would look even more ridiculous than I already do.

Inside Man (2006). It’s a pretty smart and stylish heist film, but rarely gets mentioned alongside the greats — totally underrated.

Seconded

Good heist, agreed. Very solid.

Moon (2009) was very good! Sam Rockwell plays a man who is alone on the moon for 3 years mining resources. The robot GERTY was creepy but also nice. I like how the film explores what it means to be human. It's one of my favorites.

Really underrated

I’ll second this

Hilda: The Mountain King

In this film, Hilda, a young adventurer, finds herself in the body of a troll after a mysterious encounter. She must navigate the mountain world and find a way to return to her own body. The story explores themes of identity, the connection between humans and nature, and Hilda’s growth as a person. The film is known for its beautiful animation, emotional depth, and whimsical adventure.

Frozen 2

Elsa learns that her abilities are connected to an ancient mystery involving her family and the elements. The film explores themes of self-discovery, the importance of family, and embracing change.

The Whale

The story centers on Charlie, a reclusive, morbidly obese English teacher who is struggling with his health and trying to reconnect with his estranged daughter, Ellie. The film explores themes of guilt, shame, redemption, and the complexities of society. The film delves into Charlie’s attempt to reconnect with his daughter while confronting his past mistakes. It also reminds me of how a good book can be really … helpful.

"Wristcutters: A Love Story" is a fantastic film that never got much love, but is absolutely worth the watch.

The film is about a character named Zia who kills himself because his girlfriend left him, only to find out people who commit suicide end up in an afterlife that's exactly like regular reality except just a little worse. He finds out from a mutual that his ex girlfriend killed herself shortly after his suicide and he sets out on a road trip to find her.

It's an awesome heart felt dark comedy. Definitely one of my favorites of all time

You know, I actually saw that.

It was more based than it sounds.

Tom Waits was great in this movie!

Also, funny fact... The character Eugene, Zia's rockstar friend, was based on the lead singer of Gogol Bordello Eugene Hütz, who actually auditioned for the part. He didnt get it šŸ˜‚, but they still used the band's music

Underrated: Imitation Game

Sunshine movieā˜€ļø the sun is dying and one mission to reignite it as a last ditch effort, cool sunshield ship to get there and detonate a nuke and epic scene and music score still makes the hairs on my neck stand

Sunshine

Solid.

good one. i couldn't believe I never saw this when I finally watch it.

kinda turns into a slasher flick at the end but love the vibe

That's the one I think of too when I see this question.

To watch: Unbreakable, Bruce Willis. Asks what is a hero, and who is a villain. I know M. Night has had some flops, but I love this movie.

The meh, Avatar. Stunning special effects, but just so preachy it makes me gag.

Unbeatable is solid.

The rest of the trilogy, filmed at the right times so connections in the movie were filmed the correct number of years apart, is amazing too.

McAvoy in Split should be on every list of best performances of all time.

I agree Avatar, blue alien version not the kids one, is overrated garbage.

I saw your post on Twitter, Lyn, where you wrote about the risks of Bitcoin. Since I don’t use Twitter myself, I’m writing here instead. I’m also curious—what do you personally see as the main risks?

————

When it comes to price, Bitcoin may be difficult for people to intuitively accept, since it represents a purely abstract form of monetary premium—something that only a small minority might truly grasp, while the majority may never fully understand it.

On a more fundamental and structural level, isn’t it possible that the network could have split into multiple chains, with no single chain receiving overwhelming support like the current one?

Sorry, I meant to post this under a different thread—I’m still not very familiar with how things work here.

I started that thread after having a recent update on quantum threats, which put quantum near the top of my list.

Lyn, could you explain why quantum is the biggest risk? I agree it is the biggest risk of bitcoin too, but not in the same way.

Quantum never has to deliver anything (it won’t), but it can invoke fear and action as a social layer attack upon individuals. All they have to do is convince people the threat is real to get people to fork Bitcoin into submission. Trust the physicists….

Can you explain why Bitcoin isn’t THE quantum computer? we’ve already established there is no second best….unless bitcoin is second best to quantum computing.

If we are going to actually talk about quantum fud then we must acknowledge the critical role of the observer/measurement in quantum systems. Why can we just bat an eye at the inherent flawed model of complete centralization in ā€œquantum computingā€ regarding a singular centralized computer (node), a single centralized observer (miner) and a single centralized owner of all qubits (UTXOs). Why is centralization OK?

The quantum computer has been sitting in front of us for 16 years and nobody has recognized as such. We are all wrong.

Is the image and idea of what a quantum computer can do actually your idea, or was it an idea told to you? Would you recognize a quantum computer if it was right in front of you?

Bitcoin already computes the most important thing, so is there a second best? The only thing I know is that Bitcoin exists without any decoherence.

Disturbia: great movie.

I appreciate all the comments on this thread. I’ll go back and reference it numerous times probably.

Hardly anyone wanted to highlight moves they think deserve a bit less hype. That’s always harder.

As a very unpopular set of views, I’ll give two of my answers that I didn’t see referenced. These aren’t my only answers, but I’m picking them for the spice.

-I think Cloud Atlas is underrated.

-I think Dark Knight is overrated.

Now, before you shoot me, I will provide an important caveat. I love Dark Knight more than Cloud Atlas. However, I think that Dark Knight is a bit overrated, and Cloud Atlas is a bit underrated.

Dark Knight is often considered close to a 10/10 whereas I’d say it’s a 9/10. I can list a ton of plot holes.

Cloud Atlas is often considered like a decent 6/10 or 7/10 where I’d say it’s an 8/10 or better. In addition to its quality as a movie, the complexity it took to change the script from a novel to a movie to make use of a movie’s advantages and disadvantages was an insanely hard challenge. They had to structurally change parts of the plot and have it still make sense.

Overrated? The Bourne Movies. If those movies are the reason that gimbals were invented I’ll give them a pass.

Underrated: Sunshine

Seemed like some dumb ā€œrestart the sunā€ story like The Core (released same time too). Couldn’t be farther from the truth. It was the story of a team struggling with a one way mission and the weight of all life hanging in the balance.

Overrated: Mulholland Drive

Lynch is just a moron who makes stuff that’s purposefully incomprehensible and then says people are too stupid to understand him. 🤣

Lynch flicks are ad-hoc dada art. It's an acquired taste.

My runner up was Black Panther. Had spectacular reviews, went to see it in the theater, total ā€œmeh.ā€

I second Sunshine as underrated

Punches well above it's weight

I don't know if it is what they were going for, but this movie captured spiritual warfare in a really fascinating way.

From the blockbusters that surprised me for the quality, the writing and the acting without a doubt Maverick with Tom Cruise, arguably even better than the original.

From the films few watch because they are not blockbusters, or have some drama, or are British one stands out: About a Boy. Based on a novel by Nick Hornby is one of the very best films about the value of family, and the limitations of living alone even if you’re wealthy. No one is an island.

The Fountain was one of the strangest movies I've ever seen.

Unique for sure. Apparently Aronofsky came up with it after watching the Matrix.

All David Lynch movies are underrated:
