Good explainer
For those new and curious about the whole value for value exchange on Nostr. This is a great example. Ian has earned about $500 on his first note here on Nostr.
I think you got it, but it's a bit simpler than "Nostr code".
Just like the internet works with HTTP, you send out data in the format defined by the HTTP protocol and your router and lots of other computers around the world all know how to read, transmit and/or present the data.
Well nostr notes are a bit like that, it's data in a structured templated format. As long as the data is in a nostr form, it is basically free data and has the following properties:
1. You said it, but yeah it's signed using a personal secret key.
2. It is just data and can live anywhere.. You can back it up on your laptop. Because it is self contained data and signed, you don't need to have the data served by Elon's servers to know who sent it.
You publish it on many "relays" which is like a http web server but instead of it hosting YOUR webpages, it can be given notes and it can relay or serve those notes on your behalf. Again, it doesn't matter who serves the content.
So if one relay disappears, the others have it. Also if you back it up yourself, if the data goes missing, just republish it.
Yes a relay can still delete your content. But now it's on many servers and you don't put your trust in any of them to protect your reputation because your signature does that. So what's the realistic chance that all relays that you posted to decide to delete your posts when they aren't all in a single country or jurisdiction?
The big "problem" is discovery. Now that content you are interested in can be practically anywhere, how do you find it? Fortunately wherever it is, your favourite client can read from it if you tell it about the relay. Think: Darknet Tor web addresses for those who know.
Best still, take one relay down, guess what happens... Hydra.
So the big if IMO is whether people will stick to just a few big relays that are "safe" and regulated or if it just becomes normal for content to be all over the place and the clients just find it.

Just got on board, seems there is no way for now to connect other wallets to the app….or is this wallet different from the normal crypto wallets?
Primal has a built in wallet. On iOS, you can only use the Primal wallet. On Android, you can disable the Primal wallet and use other wallets, but you cannot get rid of the built in wallet icon in the middle of the app. So, you either use the Primal wallet, or you use another app such as Amethyst for Android or Damus for iOS that allows you a tiny bit more freedom of choice for your Lightning wallet. Primal's built in wallet is very nice though. As for "crypto wallets", Nostr only supports Bitcoin Lightning because everything else is a scam.

I am new here, can anyone explain to me what a zap is?
A zap is a direct payment. The numbers you see are actually 'sats' or 'satoshis' the smallest unit of a bitcoin (0.00000001 ₿). With the current exchange rate of about 100k$/BTC the math is actually fairly easy, roughly 1000 sats per dollar.
This means Ian right now roughly made 670$ worth in bitcoin on his post right now.
You will have to set up a wallet and connecy it to your Nostr profile in order to receive zaps. There should be enough documentation out there, and otherwise ask around and hopefully someone will help you on your way.

Dont know what app you installed, but there are a whole bunch of them; some are indeed similar to X, or 'micro blogging' as it is refered to in general. Others focus more on long-form content like articles (one such app is called yakihonne), or pictured similar to instagram (olas for example). There are cooking recipe apps, chat apps, audio/video chat room apps...
The same protocol and its socialgraph can be leveraged to build an appstore (zapstore for example), wiki's.
And you can use the same profile you use now in all of them, carrying your socialgraph (the people that follow you, and the people you follow) with you.

primal can remove it for their users but they can't remove it from the network. you can always switch to another client if they ban you. clients like damus and amethyst can't remove it for their users, because the client itself talks to multiple relays directly.

There is even an app store where developers can write code and publish it with their cryptographic identity proving that exact code was written by them. You can see which of your friends also follow the developer to make sure you are not getting scammed. This frees apps from the control of app stores.

Non-text media is still kind of centralized. Primal is hosting your video. It could be censored either by the owner of that server or by a DNS take down. My suggestion is to include a transcript or highlights in text form when posting a video.

It’s stored locally most of the time. You do need to be careful where you use it to login. Doing your own research and trusting the application developer is key. Security for that type of concern is under development

I suggest using Get Alby's extention to login. I use the extention with the Kiwi browser on Android. Spring Browser is also good, but I only use the Android Open Source Project. I don't know much about iPhones.
Extensions make it easier to login to multiple clients. Here's a great list https://nostr.net/
Nostr is a new Internet that's more like the old web. There are video clients like flare pub and you can talk to people on corny chat.
You can even use HiveTalk as a replacement for Zoom.
Nostr and TruthSocial are my go to apps. I hate X, Meta, all those apps that steal and sell your information.
